I just followed your link for all about reading...we purchased it!! We have been using How to read in 100 easy lessons...but just boring and slow for my gal. I am really excited to start something fun!! I also love the Easter baskets...fun stuff :) I just enjoy your videos...thank you for making me feel like I am not alone in this home school / life adventure!!
Great! I hope you love it as much as we do! You are definitely not alone in homeschooling! There is a huge homeschool community on TH-cam and I love to learn from other homeschooling TH-camrs! Let me know what you think about AAR!
Just subscribed!! I’m a fellow homeschool mama youtuber and I sure appreciate your videos! I thought is was already subscribed!!!! I’m clicking that notification button girl!!
Hello and welcome to my channel! It's always good to hear from other homeschooling moms who also TH-cam! You might've been subscribed. TH-cam likes to unsubscribe people for no good reason. :(
I use All About Reading (AAR) and All About Spelling (AAS) also and love it!! I have used AAR Levels 1-2 and in Level 3 now with one child and the other child is following right behind her in Level 2 and approaching Level 3 fast! I love it and am so thankful for it. When we pulled our 3 kids out of public school my daughter (the one in Level 3) was a very struggling reader. This program , along with time and our efforts has really pulled her a long way!! We are doing AAS Level 1 with both her and my 7 year old (advanced reader) now and are building the foundations for how/why to spell now! 👍🏻🤗
They truly are amazing programs, aren't they? They're also perfect for somebody like me who had no idea how to teach somebody to read or spell. It's taken a huge weight off my shoulders and has really proven to be effective!
I also love AAR and the All About Learning company in general! My son is currently working through AAR Level 1 and I am so impressed with how well it has been going. I keep thinking that I may supplement with something else if I feel he's not getting a concept, but then we complete the lesson and, just like that, he's got it. It truly is thorough and holds my wiggly little one's attention, which is something special in and of itself. I have AAS Level 1 ready to go, but I am also waiting until he finishes Level 1 of AAR before we begin. Anyway, my true point in commenting is to say that I laughed when you mentioned the C rule because I also was amazed when I discovered this. I am a natural speller so I've never given it much thought, but for an individual to whom spelling does not come so easily I feel little rules like these could make all the difference! Thanks for sharing and God bless!
It really is a great company, isn't it? They are so nice and helpful! That's so funny about the C rule. I'm learning so much about the language and I find myself thinking about various rules whenever I'm reading by myself. lol I'll think....huh...that's a closed syllable! :) It is a bit of work for the kids to remember the rules and patterns but I really do think it will set them up for success in reading and in writing! Stay tuned for next Wednesday's video where I'll be sharing a Teachers Pay Teachers resource that works perfectly with AAS and AAR if you need some extra practice with fun worksheets! :) Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for the review! This helped me reaffirm my decision to start our kids on this program this year. I will be using it with my 4th, 3rd and 2nd grader. Our past spelling programs have not been a success, so I'm starting everyone fresh with this program. From your review, I think it is exactly what we need and will fill in all the areas lacking for everyone. Thanks again!
Great! I'm so glad it was helpful! I know you're teaching a range of kids so do you plan on starting them all with Level 1 like the company recommends? I know it might be a bit too easy for your 4th grader but I think it's still important to start at the beginning.
Yes, that is exactly what I plan to do! I agree it may be too easy for my older two children, but that just may mean we move through the first level quickly. I feel as though my kids really need to start from the beginning with spelling. With the other programs we used, they really have not formed a good foundation. Honestly, this past school year, we dropped spelling completely. This gave me time to research for a new program versus just quickly choosing something else to try. We start up our new school year the first week of April, and I am excited to introduce AAS. My only concern is that I feel it may be more teacher intensive than other programs. I just had our sixth baby seven weeks ago, and things can be a little chaotic in our house! However, I switched my older kids to Teaching Textbooks for math, and that has really helped cut down on some of my teaching time. Plus, and as you mentioned, AAS really should not take that long. I will have all three kids sit down to do the lessons together, so it should not be a one-on-one subject for each of them. Hopefully I can make it work. :) And sorry, way more information than you needed! Haha.
I certainly hope it works out for you. Even though it is a tad bit teacher-intensive, it's also scripted so there isn't much though involved on your part. Also, next week I will be sharing a TPT resource that I use along with AAS and AAR that your littles might like doing. It's another way to help them learn their spelling words while giving them something to do at their seats while you work with other kids, perhaps. I hope it's helpful.
Yes, I saw your comment below regarding the TPT resource. I definitely want to check that out. Btw, with the magnetic letter tiles, do you have a whiteboard for those, as suggested? I am curious how it may work using a cookie sheet. I just was wondering if I could avoid purchasing another white board. I have one, but it is not magnetic.
You could get by without it but it would be a little bit hard since you end up using lots of letter tiles (some letters have duplicate tiles) and lots of label tiles. You could just arrange the tiles on a solid surface but they would slide around a bit.
I'm proud of you. Home schooling. Here my kids have to learn stuff in short time frame. Two have moved out with their life. One 16 y/o boy left. it amazes what he has to learn. Plus have 10y/o granddaughter & it's amazing what she has to know. A lot of kids can't learn that quickly in a short time period.
I completely agree! That's the benefit of homeschooling because you can really move at the pace of your child. Homeschooling has been a huge blessing for our family!
I'm so glad it was helpful and welcome to my channel! I have an entire homeschooling playlist if you want to catch up on those: th-cam.com/play/PL2ViP1vFsZemGJkdk-DLivrIvoVinPq2p.html Thanks so much for watching! :)
any alternatives to all about reading and spelling? I am an independent language facilitator and I am struggling during COVID, I can't afford to get this and I need an alternative so that can help me teach better.
I'm going to definitely try these two curr next year. thanks for this great review. I have a lot of confidence in your reviews and believe your totally honors about them. Thank you :)
I think you will love both of those programs! Of course, what works for one doesn't always work for another but it's nice to know that both AAR and AAS have 1 year money back guarantees! :) They really are a great company! Thank you for your vote of confidence in my opinion, it means a lot to me! :)
You use a lot of the same curriculum I do for my 1st grade son. I am wondering what you plan to use for a creative writing curriculum for 2nd grade. We use AAR, AAS, and First Language Lessons . If you posted this in a video and I missed it, I apologize. Thanks in advance.
I haven't posted any 2nd grade curriculum choices yet but I plan to in June so stay tuned for that. I will be sharing what we are going to use for her writing then. :)
This video is right on time! I just watched your All About Reading review again yesterday and wanted to hear your opinion on the spelling program too! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Do you have any videos that highlight your homeschooling schedule? Like you mentioned spelling takes 15 minutes...I'm curious how long your other subjects take and if you do every subject every day...or if no video, could you give me a rough estimate as a reply to this comment? Thank you so much!
I'm so glad this video was helpful! I just LOVE AAR and AAS! They're both such amazing programs! I did a video recently where I share our daily work flow. I'm big about not scheduling or making specific lesson plans but this video might help you out! th-cam.com/video/_aoCrVNiAEg/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching!
I am just wondering how much time is spent doing both AAS & AAR. I currently use Learning Language Arts Through Literature but my 7 year old son might benefit from this
AAR lessons take about 10-20 minutes, depending on the lesson. AAS lessons are about the same but there is quite a bit of memorization so that might or might not be overwhelming for your son. I think AAS is a great program but a bit cumbersome at times. That's why we tried a different spelling program this year but I'm not finding it as effective as AAS so it's a hard decision.
All About Spelling recommends you begin with Level 1, no matter the age of your child. The basics and foundation that they teach in Level 1 is needed to complete the other levels. I hope that helps!
AAR and AAS have placement tests on their website that I would recommend you having your child take. That's the best way to determine if your child is ready for those programs. You can also call the company with any questions you may have. They are very friendly and willing to help. :)
Start AAR at age 6! We make it special, my kids wait anxiously for their first AAR lesson a day after their 6th birthday 🙂 after AAR1 and they reading beginner reader books, I go to AAS 2. Hope this helps!
I really can't say enough good things about All About Spelling and All About Reading. Once we switched to AAR from the previous program we were using, it's like a light bulb went off and she just "got it" all of a sudden! It's been an amazing thing to watch and be a part of!
We switched from a different reading program to AAR Level 1 about mid-year of Kindergarten. I was worried about the transition but it worked out perfectly!

I like to keep grades. We are getting ready to start AAS1. Any ideas on how to grade for this program?

Ashley Skinner oh! How do I find that?
Yes, I am. That video will be going up next Wednesday! :)
The TPT bundle I'm using with AAS will be going up next week. Stay tuned! :)

I did not know that. about c
It's an amazing program! I'm glad that I was able to share it with you!
Did you start with AAR level 1 in kindergarten?
Yes, we did switch to AAR Level 1 around the middle of Kindergarten.
We switched from a different reading program to AAR Level 1 about mid-year of Kindergarten. I was worried about the transition but it worked out perfectly!
plus you give your kids extra attention. lot of kids don't get that
Yes. I didn’t know the rules either 😂
