Coma is my No. 1 GnR song, I love the way it plays, like a journey. I also prefer long songs (e.g. Extended versions, or Led Zeppelin's 30 minute long Dazed and Confused live renditions). I'm so happy that the guys have it in the Not in this Lifetime tour setlist as a regular...

Top 5 no doubt. This song was cathartic every friggin time I listened to it when it first came out 25+ years ago. Now, at 42, I have to say, Coma is the one song that I go bonkers on from the moment when I hear the intro played during this tour. Still have 3 more concerts to attend this year and can't wait. Gotta have my Coma!

Hi. I appreciate your channel. I've got some Coma info to add. My father, Michael Smolens was the doctor you can hear on the track. He also brought the defibulator machine in to get those sounds. My brother and I were lucky enough to get to see a few sessions from Use Your Illusion but not this one. We got to know Slash because he was super cool and down to earth, but we were never able to penetrate Axl's bubble. They just had him improvise a bunch of medical sounding phrases. It was one of the highlights of his life I know so thanks G'N'R!
I've got a few other interesting stories if you'd like to hear. Just message me.
and one suggestion: the acoustic piano version of November Rain. I heard that one and got a bootleg back in the late 80's. That version, with just Axl and a piano was way more powerful than the bloated, overproduced version that ended up on the record. There's so much more emotion. And every unnecessary drum fill Matt Sorum does just ruins it for me. But the acoustic version is pure gold. Not sure if there's enough there for an episode but maybe!?!?

When I met Duff, clearly I was a bit starstruck and lost for words. I wish I had it together enough to ask about this song. Obviously something like Patience, Yesterdays are simple pieces and easy to learn. But Coma? 40 chords, no repeats, no chorus and they were drunk and using chemicals.... how the hell was it putting together a song like this? Very impressive to say the least.

I really love this song... I inherited "Use your illusion 1" when my father died when i was 8 and got all of his CD's and LP's and i listened to Coma for the first time alone in my bedroom at night and got really i love with this kind of music which was 20 years ago and i'm still listening to this song.

As much of a landmark moment Appetite was for the late 80s, the Illusions albums showed that these filthy street toughs could take that next step and evolve to creating art. Coma, Estranged, and Locomotive is the proof of this.
Despite the initial reception it got from fans & critics alike when it came out in 1991, the Illusions albums have actually aged very, very well since then. Similar to Nirvana's 'In Utero' in a lot of ways when you compare the immediate reaction they both got coming off their transcendent cultural redefining efforts that made them famous.
There are a lot of songs off the Illusions records you can find new layers to appreciate no matter how often you hear them. I don't know if it's because Appetite has been played into the grave by now or what, but the Illusions actually stand the test of time a little better than Appetite does in my opinion. There's just so much more nuance and sophistication to them compared to the straight ahead, punch-in-the-face that Appetite for Destruction is.

So interesting! Thanks for the video! I've seen Guns twice now on NITL, and even if Axls voice isn't usually the best on it, it's still EASILY one of the best songs live! Such a hard riff!

Great video Sid. It's funny how I never really heard Coma before and as you get older GNR is one of the bands that you discover songs that you enjoy better at different stages in your life. Coma now is up at around 8 on my list but I also like This I love.

Easily top 3 GnR songs for me. It's one of those songs that you can put on when your having a bad day and get lost in, just crack the volume up and listen and relax. I don't know, it just works for me. I feel when you asked true GnR fans about certain GnR songs this is one of the songs that always rank in their top 10. I love the reason Duff gave why they called it "Girth" about Wes Arkeen, that's funny. I wish that guy was still around and didn't OD. He meant so much to the GnR OG 5 and he also helped Axl out with his writing in certain songs. His influence is all over both AFD and UYI I & II, outside of their group he never got the credit he deserved. When you read Duff's, Slash's and Steven's book he mentioned everywhere in the early days and up to the UYI days but then he got lost and heavy into drugs when the guys where on the road for 2 1/2 years and fucked up I guess. From what I heard Axl tried to help him but he could never get out of the reach of the drugs. It's amazing that any of them survived when you think about it. Look at all their stories, Slash and Duff's battle and Steven's also. Hell even Axl OD'd on pills and Izzy had his mile high thing on the airplane. All of them danced with the devil and came out on the other side thank God!

I think Coma is top 3, maybe the number 1 artistic achievement of the band. It's not the most fun, the most singable, or the most relatable for all fans. That's probably Nightrain or something. But Coma is the deepest. If this band left a mark on eternity, Coma is the deepest one. I'll bet the farm on that

Great coverage Sidd, however, I wish you would have noted how and why Axl OD'd....
Story goes, he and Erin were having a huge fight.... He grabbed a bottle of (over the counter) Aspirin or Tylenol and ate the whole bottle. Then OD'd.

You'd have to have more than a bottle to OD on Aspirin etc. Believe me... I've tried. I was only really young and it was the only thing I could find to do the deed. It just made me sick. No sleepy effect.. nothing. But then again, I've been using heroin for over 20 years and never OD'd.. just got headachy and sick when having too much. Maybe I'm, as Layne said, immortal 🤷🏻‍♀️😆

    • @angeliquegunnels7433

  • @lueysixty-six7300

That's so funny to hear..about the rhythm guitar players all having trouble with the end chord progression in Coma - I literally have it written down on a big A3 art paper, the chords to the lyrics - just that last part. There are just so many changes that you don't expect.
It's funny...it's so NOT intuitive.... and yet..once you play the music as written..it flows so well, and so powerfully..it's definitely the climax to that song.
It's funny, I can play the solo by memory, no problem, but the chords at the end - I still need my cheat sheet!

I just knew this band existed, I think this year. Never bothered to read and had those songs titles certain people showed me on youtube in last few years kept in my mind. There are quite a lot of personal pronouns.
That is such a long, and quite confusing song lyrics to me. Is he talking about two different people, a guy and a man?

    • @thepitcher26
      @thepitcher26 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

and just knew this song existed on today's morning. and holly crap, it is put exactly on last track on the album, which is on 16th order as the last one. it also mentions about sex, sex, sex, and sex that according to the singer, only a thing a guy wants.
