    I can think of eight or ten ways to make money with beekeeping right off the top of my head. Some are more profitable than others but anything helps when you have the expense of a hobby that can become somewhat consuming. Some beekeeping equipment can be kind of expensive. In this video I just touch on one way to make a little part time money with beekeeping.

    Nice collection: All my hives were stolen, Organic honey is pricey.
    I been trying to start over.
    A Hobby for me, I forget the problems of the world when I work with the bees.

      Man that's awful. I hate a thief. I hope you are able to build back without much out of pocket expense.
      Beekeeping is relaxing. I get in trouble for spending too much time in mine when I should be doing something else.

    I wish every person venturing out on a hobby with the intent to make money had the advice you give for beekeeping. If you venture into a hobby because you want the hobby, you're on the right track. The fact that you might recover some of your expenses later is a blessing!

      +628DirtRooster I notice many of your hives are plywood, i guess the rough surfaces aren't that big of a deal. how long do these hives last? no dovetails, just nailed plywood right? lastly where do you guys get frames?
      I would love to see your comon hive gear, where you get it, and opinions of the so called good stuff vs the diy stuff.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thomas Shue How long it all lasts is 100% dependent on how you care for your equipment but I've got boxes that are over 10 years old and in good shape.
      We bulk order frames from Dadant. I recommend buying frames and boxes precut and assembling them yourself.

    Most bee keepers that I know that do it for a living have 500 hives.
    Ask don the fat bee man how many he has. The problem is that the market is getting saturated with people selling honey and bees. One bee keeper can cover a large are. If one or two people start a company in the same town it doesn’t work out well.

      ***** Yeah, the flow hive...it's a pretty amazing invention, but I think it's just a fad. Apparently there are lots of flaws in it, so it couldn't be used for commercial bee keeping - just for the hobbyists.

      I think it is so neat to see kids in their little bee suits getting into the hobby. My niece has been working with bees since she was about eleven. She does wear her suit though. I only commented on my grand son like that to reduce the number of ignorant people who would come on here and make ugly comments that I would just have to delete. Keep those boys going with it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Thanks to you, I am a new beekeeper for 3 weeks now.
    Everything is good here so far.
    When do you know if you can split a hive?
    Can a installed 3 pound package be split the same year it was installed into a new hive and frames with new foundation?
    Thanks again for a good video.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Feed them and you can split them once they are about 80% full in their box.

    • @FloryJohann
      @FloryJohann 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for your response.
      With 80% do you mean 80% of the frames drawn with comb?
      Today, I just put another deep brood-box on top of the original new box because it had about 75% drawn comb and many bees hatched already. I got about 7 frames with brood mixed with nectar and pollen. Looks like # 8 frame will be all nectar/honey on one side ( not capped yet).
      Today, me and my wife seen a bee hatch while doing inspection before adding another box, which took only a short time for the bee to hatch. I must say that a newly hatched bee is about the same size as a fully grown adult.......AMAZING......!!!!!!

    If you can somehow manage to reduce bills to three hundred per month then you can actually work for yourself utizing twenty hives set up correctly. An income of $1200 hundred dollars can be made each and every month the temperature remains above forty five degrees. it really depends on how much work to want to place into it. if all of your work hours are dedicated to bee keeping you can make six times that much or more.

    So true! With the killer bees, everyone gets alarmed any time they see a bee! I must have the hives far away from people.
    I get calls, your bees are in my yard. My last hive is at my home. I was involved in a court case, took years before it was over. Beekeeping insurance is getting to be a must. I was cleared of any liability, any person gets stung, it must have been one of my bees.

      +Charles Coleman We appreciate y'all watching. You can keep queen cells out for several hours depending on what stage they are at. The older they are the longer they can be without the heat of the hive. We usually wrap them up in a tshirt or something and try and keep them a little warm when transporting.

    My bees will pay for themselves when I start. Here in Pennsylvania the tax laws are such that if you own a 'farm' with livestock (like bees) you don't pay income tax. I'm not sure how large my operation might get. My wife is very allergic so I have to be conscious of that, and I'm not interested in having satellite yards.
    That's a good question. If you're yard is well planted with pollinating plants, on say, half an acre, how many hives could you reasonably expect to have? I'm going to place mine in a small orchard, apples, pears, figs, etc. and a bunch of honeysuckle.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey rooster, I have a question for you. Those are plastic foundation right? If not, Id like your recommendations how to take out queen cells out of a plastic foundation. If those are plastic foundation, I'd like to know if your method has changed over the years? I've seen people using metal screen cages to put over the queen cell and wait for her to hatch and then do what you want to do with her. What do you think of this method?

      I wouldn't say to never get insurance but I don't have any and don't know anyone who does for hive or swarm removals. It would be beneficial in some situations. I have had companies tell me they couldn't use me more than just "this one emergency" because I was not insured only to have them call again the next year. Insurance for this can run $750 to $1,250 per year.

    Do you tend to save more on taxes writing off beekeeping classified as a 'hobby business', or as a 'farm'? It technically could qualify as either depending on how serious you are. But particularly if you are doing land payments etc for acreage then you may need to try to push it as a farm (?)

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are set up as an LLC. I write off everything as a business experience including anything I use in videos or to make videos.

    • @noahriding5780
      @noahriding5780 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply.
      If you do it as an LLC, do you not have to worry about reporting losses too often like you would with it classified as farming, or similar?
      There are cases where if its farming business if you have too many loss years in like a 7 year period, supposedly they may try to dispute your returns, and its messed people up.
      But of course, farming and bee farming especially wow it can be volatile and weird. You never know if you'll keep your shirt if some big storm happens in your state.
      Well thanks for your thoughts and videos. Really love seeing the bee yards.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With any business you can only show a loss for three years, I think, without raising red flags. If you are running it as a business that you never plan to make a profit with I'd just set up a new LLC every three years. LLC filings are cheap and easy. This is not advice from a tax professional. I'm 32 years self employed but I've never filed my own taxes and I don't stay up to date on tax codes. I always use an accountant.
      Ideally you would begin to turn a profit at some point and wouldn't have to worry about all that.

    Good video. Where are you located? Up in my area our honey flows are short. Only six weeks. It's tough to get the nuts started but it can be done. I'm running forty colonies. I am very different and allow swarming to take place since it's a natural process. Obviously, I don't harvest as much honey as I can but I'm building the colonies for next year with more queen rearing. In my state we have to be registered as a queen breeder or seller of bees. The state will inspect the operation twice a season to check for disease issues. Great policy and protects the purchasers too.
    Keep them coming.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are in south MS. We don't register here but Louisiana does. They don't inspect though.
      I don't mind if a hive swarms as long as I catch the swarm. I missed at least three of my swarms this year already. The good thing about that is it gives you a fresh queen.

    could you live off beekeeping with more than 200 hives?

  • @TomBrueggen
    @TomBrueggen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I must say, hobby beekeeping, or even small business scale can be profitable, but it relies on a large nearby market for both the hive products and the bees themselves (the nucs). I don't want to toot my own horn, as I know it's very area dependent, and I'm just lucky to have a lot of outlets, both at my job and through community relations that sell my product. I always have a line waiting for honey when I harvest!
    Here is my advice. Start small, and build on a cash flow basis. If you find you can't sell the honey for a decent rate, stop making honey. Maybe turn it into mead instead! If you're making splits/nucs and find you can't sell them, focus elsewhere. I make most of my money doing bee removals, selling full strength hives, and teaching beekeeping classes. The removals are good down here since Houston is about 3 million people, and there are A LOT of old, run down houses with little to no insulation in the walls, creating endless places for bees to set up shop. The classes are a great way to get my name out there for my services, and also a good outlet for my honey.
    But again, my number one rule is to not get ahead of yourself. If you find you have 30 hives you are maintaining, and they aren't selling or making honey, then they are costing you money!
    I intend to do a whole series on beekeeping economics as well just as soon as I can figure out how to put it together in a format I like. Thanks for sharing!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. Similar to your situation, here in South MS there is almost nothing about beekeeping that can't be made profitable. I do a lot a hive removals myself both for extra income and for the fun of the challenge.

      @BrueggensBees 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +GEODEAHOLIC M Yeah, look out, their all sorts of piss and vinegar! I've done a few that were pretty hot here in Houston. One point of professional caution: Once you start a job, you have to finish. Leaving them exposed only makes it worse. 80+ removals I've only had two that either had, or ended up sending someone to the hospital. Not proud to say it, but I euthanised both colonies as I am in a highly urban area and couldn't have that risk while I waited out a requeening effort.
