I feel for you. I am a Mini Specialist in the UK and had a few cars which just would not want to cooperate and the amount of work and detail to the job means you can get tired and one split second can cause a massive over-run because something might have not been right. Especially since this valve gear is so pretentious, I always make sure I torque things to spec even if I just done it, but even then it can be frustrating to say the least. I had a reconditioned head on a car and upon start it would stall immediately. I did everything to diagnose it, turned out that after swapping the intake cam sensor ( which was a clone ) to an original it worked like a charm.

Hi Ben, just a question for you.
I want to buy a mini 1,4l 95hp 2009 200 000kms but the car run on 3 cylinders and I can see a white smoke at the exhaust after few kilometers.
I think about valve stem seals or exhaust valve on cylinder.
    What's your opinion?
    Thanks for your videos.

You may have found the issue by now, but be aware that the n12 cylinder head has a tendency to drop valve seats, majority are inlet valve seats and as you noted by tricking the ECU into safe mode causes the valve lift to max and in doing so slams the valve into the seat ensuring a seal at compression, while in VVT mode the valve doesn't produce enough force to seat the valve seat which causes a misfire. Solution is to replace the offending valve seats.

I have looked at a lot of forums to find the solution as a lot of people have been searching long and hard to find it. I did see something in a forum about the valve seats dropping after the engine is warm. So the fix would be to change the valve seats, correct?

Hope you sold it. Those engines are terrible. Between carbon build up and chain guides being shredded and contaminating your entire engine, they are a non stop headache. Trust me. 😅
