That's good info. I've never ordered direct from a tannery. One detail I've found extremely helpful is using District Leather and Rocky Mountain for splitting leathers down to the size I need. I'd never be able to do it cleanly and they will do it on small panels for a good price or even free. Total game changer that ups the quality of my projects.
Really great information. I just get into leather crafting and I bought leathers from both tandy and rm leather supply. I saw people recommend craftsman oak from tandy. I bought a 4-5 oz piece and it cost more than expected. I also bought a chrome tanned leather from tandy, but I did not make a craft yet. Two weeks before, I bought a piece called buttero from rm. It was insane! It has an unbelievably good smell and it is much easier to work with. I wish I have had this information before, saves a lot of money.
I was buying of Amazon for my first few pieces and just recently ordered a couple shoulders from Tandy online (Since their closest store is a 2 hour drive for me) But as I get more into this hobby I'm glad to know I can find information easier than you did, because you shared it with us. Thank you.

Started as a kid making holsters and then an Edward Scissorhands Halloween outfit, the Crow, etc. Don't have too much of my original stuff left at 46, so I ordered some gun belts and holsters to tear apart with my 12 year old Son, so that I can show him how to alter and stitch them back up properly. Pricing is outrageous for the poor quality!!! Been hunting for better deals than Tandy, as well as better tools than I used to have. Looked at the black Friday deals today at Tandy, then found you!!!! Exactly the information I was looking for! Thank you again!!!
These are three of my top four suppliers! The fourth is a local place I am lucky enough to live near that is an industry supplier. I am happy to have the confirmation. Thanks for the great videos.
Tandy varies from store to store. The baseline location will have all your tooling and supply needs, as well as a reasonable selection of leather. Larger locations (such as the Sacramento CA store) is a full warehouse with a huge selection of leathers. Coupled with a buyer's club membership etc it quickly is on par with any specialty shop, you get to hand pick too.
Ha, cats always try and be the most inconvenient. Also good to know there are some options. I remember taking our deer hides to Tandy to have them tanned growing up. Thought they were the only local suppliers. Thanks for the info Weston!
It would be really nice to see a short series of video's of you making something like a simple waistcoat (etc.). From choosing and buying the leather, measuring, cutting and everything else that's involved.
@@RoseAnvil Whatever you think best for a guy that wants to use high-end leather to make wallets, watch straps, boots... For me personally, I want to get into leather working and I come from the woodworking realm and I like to use the nicer wood pieces and tools to make boxes, bowls and so on. I'd like to learn about the best tools (buy once cry once) and skip the entry level stuff. Same goes for the leather and mats and other necessity. Hope that helps.

How about a series of videos explaining which types (and weights) of leather for various projects: belts (dress and gun), wallets, book covers, straps (musical instruments), pet accessories, vests, lady's skirts, shoes, sandals, gun holsters, bags, backpacks, moulded cases, etc. When I first started leather crafting, I was overwhelmed at the variety and ended up buying a bunch of wrong leathers for projects I wanted to make.
Springfield leather in Springfield Mo. Is a great place large inventory very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great people.! They will cut almost any size and quantity.

Hey! I just found your channel and as a vegetarian that has been avoiding buying leather it has been really interesting to find out more about the process and make better decisions from now on. I was wondering if you have any video about the process from cow to leather? Is it always a by-product of the meat industry? Is there a breed of cows raised for their leather? Can you know how the cows were raised? I don't know if these are stupid questions, but I'd be interested in knowing more and I don't seem to find that info anywhere. Even shoe makers have told me it is impossible to know where the leather comes from. Anyway, great channel! Thanks for all the info.
Maverick is awesome. Their location is on my way to work. There are always bundles of scraps for small projects (a wallet or two) and odds and ends for one-off projects (can’t justify a side for a pair of moccasins, right?).

Have you had a problem with Springfield Leather Co.? They have always dealt fairly with me and have great prices. They have flash sales which they notify you by E-mail, sometimes 2 - 3 times a week. I find that their prices are better than Tandy most of the time and they do not try to get you off the phone quickly, but take the time to answer all your questions.

Liked and subscribed brotha. I went through the same hunts. One place I love to hit up is hobby lobby. They have a small selection but the have to bag sizes of tooling bellies and shoulders. AND a 40 to 50 percent off, online coupon always. So I pick up some decent hides there for 25 to 35 bucks. Not to mention remenet bags , garbage tools, rivets an basics. Good way to test the waters if some one doesn't know if it's their thing. Cheers!

I had been getting British made hand tools off of eBay, which is a great way to keep craft alive, but hunting for the keepers is time consuming. I made my holster out of economy leather. It has a scar on the side of it. But I absolutely love the scar because it showed the life of that cow
