- 🎥 BlackTree TV Saturday Morning Feature: Black Sister’s Revenge (1976) | Black History Month Celebration 🎥
As part of our Black History Month celebration of movies, this Saturday Morning Feature presents the bold and unforgettable film Black Sister’s Revenge (also known as Emma Mae)-a raw and gripping story of empowerment, survival, and resilience. Written and directed by Jamaa Fanaka, a key figure in the L.A. Rebellion film movement, this film is a powerful example of independent Black cinema that speaks to the heart of urban struggles and personal transformation.
Plot Summary:
Black Sister’s Revenge follows Emma Mae (Jerri Hayes), a tough, no-nonsense young woman from Mississippi who moves to Los Angeles after her mother’s death. Initially shy and reserved, Emma Mae soon finds herself entangled in the harsh realities of urban life, including crime, betrayal, and systemic injustice.
After falling for a smooth-talking hustler, Emma’s loyalty is tested when she’s drawn into a dangerous world of gang violence and corruption. But when betrayal strikes close to home, Emma transforms from a naive Southern girl into a fearless, self-empowered woman who takes matters into her own hands-seeking justice, respect, and revenge.
This film is a gritty, unapologetic exploration of Black womanhood, street life, and the fight for dignity in the face of oppression.
Notable Cast & Crew:
🔹 Jerri Hayes - In her breakout role as Emma Mae, Hayes delivers a raw and fearless performance, embodying the spirit of Black female empowerment.
🔹 Ernest Williams II - Plays Emma’s love interest, whose actions set off the chain of events that lead to her transformation.
🔹 Jamaa Fanaka (Writer & Director) - A trailblazer of the L.A. Rebellion film movement, Fanaka’s work focuses on Black resilience, urban struggles, and self-determination. His gritty, independent filmmaking style adds authenticity to the story.
Why This Film Matters for Black History Month:
We’ve chosen Black Sister’s Revenge for our Black History Month celebration because it’s a powerful portrayal of a strong Black woman’s journey to self-discovery and independence. The film challenges stereotypes, highlighting the complexity of Black female characters in cinema long before mainstream films caught up.
As part of the L.A. Rebellion film movement, Jamaa Fanaka’s work represents a crucial era in Black film history, where Black filmmakers took control of their narratives to reflect authentic, unfiltered stories about their communities.

Classic and very underrated black feminist tale by the same director who made the Penetentiary movies. Thank you for posting this. This channel is great and very much needed.

I Wish I Was There! Born in 1975 I Missed It. Compton Was Crackin’ Even Back Then. Black LA. Classic Black Cinema.
@36:48 The young woman in blue is the famed artist Synthia St James, among her works, she is known for the cover art on Terri McMillan's Waiting to Exhale.
When I look in those faces in this movie and our people everyday, all I see is original Indigenous copper colored people of this land! We are a beautiful strong people.
Gammy Singer who played Emma Mae's aunt was in a lot of TV shows back in the day. The ones that come to mind are _Sister, Sister_ (season 2) when Lisa had to take the twins to the hospital for their appendix removal and she played the admitting nurse. And the other was on _Good Times_ (season 5) when JJ rented out one of the rooms for a boarder who was actually in witness protection and a hitman came looking for him, she was an undercover cop masquerading as the witness' daughter in law. She was also in _A Piece of the Action_ where she played Sidney Poitier's mother-in-law.

They only made her the least attractive in this movie because she was dark. All the women talking side ways in this movie to her ain’t even prettier they’re just lighter
The best cars were in the 70's 80's 90's.
Correct! 1960s weren't bad either.

My Dad bought my first Chevy in 1979, I had a total of 19 cars through out the years on my own, I didn't expect my Dad to buy the rest of my cars.
Trying to compete with Reelback channel of black content I see. I've been tuning into that one on and off for years and here I come across YOU. Don't be trying to make me jump ship now. -_-
EDIT: Going through your channel, I realized you already posted this movie over a month ago as a holiday feature under its original title EMMA MAE. Why post this again???
Not competing with @Reelblack Reel Black is a much needed fixture in the content space. So don’t jump ship.
I have this movie for 60 days and it is almost up so just wanted to give the audiences another chance to check it out. Also try to curate a playlist of movies each weekend so we felt like this was the vibe.
