9:53 THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! Don't make excuses, just SIGN UP for a competition! I had a ton of fun at my first competition. It was very inviting and friendly. Many competitors say that they are really competing against themselves, trying to lift more than last time. We were all cheering each other on. My best lifts aren't impressive, but now that they are officially recorded in USAPL's database, it gives me more motivation to lift way more next time.
Siddharth Kamble it depends on your goals of course. If you just want to compete just because, sure, but optimally you want to compete at an athletic bf %.
I weigh about 73kg right now at almost 6 foot, competing at a state meet for fun tomorrow. Just hoping for double bodyweight Squat and deadlift as I am tall and skinny. Let's see how this goes :)
@@OmgDeadForRealz-Channel-Watch True, but FOR my height.. I would have to weigh a lot more than I want to be remotely strong for powerlifting. For longevity purposes.. I'll rather maintain a 30" waist, great mobility, 10-11%bf, and ~23 BMI.
My first powerlifting meet was yesterday and it was great, I won first in my weight class, granted I was the only one in my weight class, someone in my school who was competing squatted 520 easy so that was exciting
This helped take the anxiety of competing so much. Would LOVE videos like this. Maybe how to warm up at meets? Like getting adequately prepared for your opener without being fatigued, what to do to keep "warm" in between your attempts etc
Terrified to compete but pushing myself to find competitions near me. I was also considering dropping my weight to make a class below me since I'm fairly close, it's a relief to hear you recommend just going for it and reminding us to have fun with our lifting. Thankyou, Alan!
suske wiske Its the worst if you're like me. I'm a Civil Engineering student in Canada and since we deal with the US so much we have to learn everything in both sets of units!
What's RPE? About to do first meet. I think I'm just going to PR on every attempt for all three lifts. By the way, anyone know any good pre-workouts to try? Want to try one that will help me through meet day, which hopefully isn't too long. Hopefully I don't shit myself either as I've cut a lot of weight to be more competitive against these smaller chumps Thanks for all help Alan and please leave me some tips to make my first meet a blast!! Oh ya how do I program snatch?
pberi19k My mom's a total bitch who doesn't understand the intristic knowledge needed to perform the snatch. Besides she wasted her life doing bro splits and getting DQ'd from bodybuilding competitions. My other mom left her when I was 4 but I bet my genes came from her
Awesome of you to put this together and up!I'm sure it helped a lot of people who thought about competing but were insecure about it.Even though I've got 8 meets behind me, I still watched the whole thing.
Alan, always on point with these videos. I just yesterday thought about going to a meet. And today you give me all the knowledge I need to know to do it. Thanks for the upload
Just came home after my first meet. Bench and squat events were kinda meh, yet the deadlift made up for it . I was the only one using conventional , yet 350kg pull felt amazing . Besides dizzyness ;D
just go for it. everyone at meets are super helpful and welcoming. ask them all the questions you have. everyone wants to win, but everyone gets cheered on the same. doesnt matter if you lift 10 pounds or 1000, everyone is cheering for you
749 nice deadlift! summo even yuk. I lifted all through school would like to start competing again working on breaking 1500 total first at 215... Oh and over 40 no cartidlige in knees but im getting closer.
Alan, great vid, but I was hoping you would talk a little about the warmup part. You obviously want to get warm and loose but not wear yourself out. How much weight do you warm up with and how many reps? For example, if I plan to d/l 200/210/220kg, what type of warm up weight and reps should I do and how soon before it's my turn?

How do I sign up bro I can’t find where on the powerlifting website😭
@@joshuagoodsell5952 I just signed up a couple days ago. Which federation do you wanna compete in?
@@saiyan1191 I think it’s called usapowerlifting
@@saiyan1191 whatever one would have the most meets
What do u mean just sign up isn't there like a qualifying standard u have to be able to lift? Or do they just let anyone do it??
Sounded like Thrall said "do not cut weight" but alls I heard is "cut to 74's, you'll be shredded AF"
alphalphalete tbh, powerlifters don't need to be shredded. But if you're are strong in that way, it's good.

Using the metric system? Have you guys finally come to your senses ;)
Technically we switched to metric in '75... we're just a country of scofflaws though.
suske wiske we have always used the metric system for weights
Officialy: Metric.
Properly: Imperial.
Very aggravating.
suske wiske Freedom units still reign unfortunately

Hope your meet went well!
Thank you - just finished - it went well - was a good experience :)
4:00 best part
3:15 what a nice good looking squat
It is a perfect high bar squat. Who says that you can't lift big weights using high bar style. you definitely can.
That guys lifts were all bang on textbook form.
You can tell he doesn't compete in the IPF.
@@BigUriel he had a no arch close grip bench. Now that’s RAW.
Thanks. I have a couple meets coming up and ive never done one little nervous about it. Video layed out it simple
that Catwalk was FIERCE

Omg! Thank you so much! This was super helpful!! I’m preparing for my 1st power lifting meet!
Watched this video a few times and my favorite part is the tidbits he leaves at the end about weight cuts...
Doing my first meet at the end of the month, great timing!
Competing for the first time next school year and I’m winning state without a doubt in my mind
I got a mock meet tomorrow at local powerlifting gym! Perfect timing! Thanks

What an excellent video. Thank you Alan for doing this one!! 😊💪
"You know what's a way cooler way of beating everyone? Just getting really strong" fucking words to live by.
That scoring card hit right in the heart, Alan. I am Adam Paul.

Gahddamn Luke made that 750# pull look effortless!
Great video.... In IPF sanctioned meets the call for "Platform Ready" is "Bar Loaded" . Greetings from Pakistan

Thanks for the video Alan. I'm considering competing but kinda scared and there is no one around me that competes so this helps
