actually the mystery behind the boat on Bouvet Island was solved in early 2016 by a guy on the Internet, after nearly 5 years of researching. apparently the boat came from a russian ship, some researchers got stranded on the island and got rescued by helicopter after 3 days...
page 129 of Transactions of the oceanographical institute, slava 9 boath, the men were stranded for 3 days, after being saved by helicopter on 29 Nov 1958.
It was in 1964 when they discovered the boat. And since it is in "relatively good condition" it couldnt have been more than a month or even a week before. Modern helicopters have been around for a couple decades already

If you look up the island on google maps it still goes to those coordinates, but there's no island. You can see the undersea terrain and there's no crater or anything hinting that an island was ever there.

The Bouvet Island lifeboat is actually a solved mystery. A Soviet Antarctic Expedition bulletin from 1959 described an expedition to Bouvet Island in 1958 led by Gennady Solyanik that was undertaken to study birds there. The lifeboat was used to get them to the island from the Slava-9 whaling ship they were using for the voyage. When a bad storm stranded them on the island, they were stuck there for 3 days before the Slava-9's rescue helicopter was able to get over there to bring them back to the ship.
Living in Sonora, Mexico, I had absolutely no idea about the cannibalism in Tiburón (which is spanish for shark, by the way.) I've seen the island from far away only, though. The Seris are very important in the state, and from what I've read out of curiosity, the island is holy land to them and it is protected by the mexican government as a natural reserve, and like Top5s said it is now uninhabited except for a military base. I have to investigate more, though; the Seris being cannibals in the past and this being reported by no one in Mexico seems sketchy to me. That, or I'm terribly uninformed about my own state/country... Edit: looking around a bit, there is nothing about the Seri culture being cannibalistic on the Island reported by mexicans. The most I can find about this is in english. Sketchy.

Bermeja island sounds a lot like a fine example for something that's called phantom island in cartography. It's an island that got drawn on maps due to older sources that miscalculated their positions or something like that. There is a lot of reasons why an island marked on a 17 century map is not real or dozens of miles where it's shown on the map or never existed at all. And to the the USA blew it up theory in the 1920s well then they must have had an enourmous amount of foresight into the future because neither did anyone expect something like off shore oil drilling becoming an reality nor did the 200 miles zone of exclusive economic development exist back then. Yes 200 nautical miles was an idea in the 50ies and so on but this didn't come as real international law until the mid eighties.
I bet that Bermeja Island had a huge cave under it and collapsed into the sea from the movement of plates causing a crack leading to the cave and the weight of the water made the island disappear.

wat. antarctica doesnt belong to any state so theres no passport or immigration control, no visas or permission required. its the one place on earth that literally anyone can go to. there are companies that do commercial visits or you can just get yourself a boat or a plane and go. theres no one to stop you.

According to the statistics I found, over 30 thousand people a year visit Antarctica as tourists and theres growing concern over their environmental impact.

The lifeboat was used to get them to the island from the Slava-9 whaling ship they were using for the voyage. When a bad storm stranded them on the island, they were stuck there for 3 days before the Slava-9's rescue helicopter was able to get over there to bring them back to the ship.

Living in Sonora, Mexico, I had absolutely no idea about the cannibalism in Tiburón (which is spanish for shark, by the way.) I've seen the island from far away only, though. The Seris are very important in the state, and from what I've read out of curiosity, the island is holy land to them and it is protected by the mexican government as a natural reserve, and like Top5s said it is now uninhabited except for a military base. I have to investigate more, though; the Seris being cannibals in the past and this being reported by no one in Mexico seems sketchy to me. That, or I'm terribly uninformed about my own state/country...
Edit: looking around a bit, there is nothing about the Seri culture being cannibalistic on the Island reported by mexicans. The most I can find about this is in english. Sketchy.

Bermeja island sounds a lot like a fine example for something that's called phantom island in cartography. It's an island that got drawn on maps due to older sources that miscalculated their positions or something like that. There is a lot of reasons why an island marked on a 17 century map is not real or dozens of miles where it's shown on the map or never existed at all.
And to the the USA blew it up theory in the 1920s well then they must have had an enourmous amount of foresight into the future because neither did anyone expect something like off shore oil drilling becoming an reality nor did the 200 miles zone of exclusive economic development exist back then.
Yes 200 nautical miles was an idea in the 50ies and so on but this didn't come as real international law until the mid eighties.

wat. antarctica doesnt belong to any state so theres no passport or immigration control, no visas or permission required. its the one place on earth that literally anyone can go to. there are companies that do commercial visits or you can just get yourself a boat or a plane and go. theres no one to stop you.

The bulk of the people on Antarctica are scientists (obviously) and contractors that maintain the power, trash, vehicles, equipment, etc etc. Also, countries put small claims on sections of the island, but none of it is official, it's pretty odd.

As far as restrictions go, if youre a citizen of a signatory state to a particular Antarctic Treaty youre required to notify your own government of your visit but apparently thats usually handled by your travel providers, and of course because Antarctica is not a state or nation there are no visa requirements, or anyone to refuse you entry.
According to the statistics I found, over 30 thousand people a year visit Antarctica as tourists and theres growing concern over their environmental impact.

bouvet island has been explored multiple times by norwegian expedition teams during the 20-30s, u know, when they claimed the island and put a flag there. They even built field station/cabin there. The island has also been visited by many ships before that lifeboat was found.
