Same issue happened to me on the highway....and I got the SL55 up in the air addressing it. It sound like you had water intrusion into the connector to the transmission. The signals from the TCU are only 5v, so water from outside or oil from inside the trans causes loss of signal and limp mode. In your case it sounds like you must be missing the third belly pan plate...if it is in place it should block the wash jets. Also it may be time to replace the connector....I would dig into this a bit more since in theory driving in the rain could cause a repeat....no fun I get it....keep wrenching!
