Beautiful. So much to comment on. First of all, Mr. Arkin is truly one of the most talented actors of the last 50 years. He truly becomes his characters. Secondly, he's been in some of the most interesting, if not well-known, movies of the last 50 years: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Catch-22, and Popi are three of my favorites of all time. And lastly, his Brando story is one of the greatest showbiz stories of all time. Yossarian Lives!!
I've admired Arkin's acting for decades. From " The Russians... " to " Kominsky, " he has always hit a home run for me. His portrayal of Lt. Rozanov was impeccable! " Whittaker Walt...don't do it no more. " And as John Singer, the deaf- mute in " The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, " he was extraordinary!
How about Inspector Clouseau?
Alan Arkin, modest and as honest as his performances. I always smile with delightful anticipation.

Catch-22 is a classic as is the heart is a Lonely Hunter also loved him with James Caan in the quirky film, Freebie and the Bean. Saw three times with my high-school girlfriend and we laughed our heads off!

So sorry that none of Arkin's beloved roles were discussed. We would have loved to hear about Papi, The Russians Are Coming, Catch 22. Too bad.
The end about meeting your heroes is so true because you’ll often be disappointed. But the Brando story was very funny!

Re: what he talks about 10 minutes in, about people laughing when their minds go blank - I've always theorized that we cry when we don't know what to do, and we laugh when we don't know what to think.

That's where I first saw him and I remember thinking, "who IS this guy? he can't be an actor... he's too real... does he know how funny he is? does he know this isn't a comedy?" He's so brilliant in it he becomes an obsession the more you watch the movie. He's amazing in Grosse Point Blank, and so is his friend Barbara Harris... she's astonishing as Cusack's mother.
Two of my favorite celebrities on the planet. I’d have said “people” instead of celebrities but it wouldn’t have gone over well with my mother. Or my wife.

My lord, it's Harry Roat Jnr. from Scarsdale. What a great sadistic killer he played in Wait Until Dark & terrorising Audrey Hepburn. Also enjoyed him in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter. His acting ability is quite diverse. Just realised apart from Julie Herrod from WUD Alan is the only one left from that movie I think.
48:38 to 50:30 should be Alan's next acceptance speech. That was poetic, precise, off the cuff wisdom from a man who has seen most things. This alone is reason enough for this entire chat show, and maybe podcasting and even the internet as a whole to exist.

For the longest time, say 1980-2000, where was Alan Arkin? One of the best actors ever, like Nicholson, he can do drama or comedy equally well.

Mr Arkin bought gas at a station I worked at, missed him every time he was there. Even at that I would watch him read a phone book, so that's for this Kevin.
Brando greets him with " I can't believe it's really you," says he's seen "In-Laws" 20 times, imitates his favorite scene of the movie, which has Arkin, many times over dinner and Arkin doesn't really know why Brando had them over for dinner.

Oh my God. They really need to make that original script version of Blazing Saddles. Just Alan explaining the original concept had me laughing out loud. It makes me disappointed in Mel Brooks because I didn't think his Blazing Saddles was all that funny. It was more FUN than funny. The In-laws was a much funnier film.

Kevin always wears a hat because he's self conscious about going bald. I saw one interview where someone actually said, "Hey, we're indoors! Why don't you take off your hat?" and Kevin became very annoyed.

No he did not. Eddie Murphy was the one to beat that year not Mark Wahlberg. I am glad Alan Arkin won he should have gotten it for The heart is a lonely hunter. The Academy gave it to Cliff Robertson for Charley instead.
