I've been struggling with this kata for like 6 months because I couldnt get the elbow block right but thanks to you I feel like I have improved on it better than those 6 months
@@KarateDojowaKu Can you give me tips on how to skip a belt in my karate class this boy in my karate class skipped 3 belts and I’m trying to catch up 😅
Ian Abernathy is great. Although I suggest taking a look at Maasaki Taira, Seiu Oyata and an Okinawan named Kuba as to compare Bunkai as the Okinawans traditionally do it.
very different to the "everything is a strike or block" as taught in most shotokan places these days. Heian Sandan actually deals with very close range techniques, I have heard it described as a grappling kata.
I like your demonstration videos. You are very clear in your explanations and your videos are very well produced. It is fun for me to see explanations from a slightly different tradition. One day, probably in the ‘90s, I was walking from the staff office into the hallway and someone came unexpectedly from my right. Immediately my hands began to move simultaneously in Ude Uke (sweeping Jodan protecting my face) and Gedan Barai (sweeping Judan protecting my centerline) motions with open hands. I thought, “Where in the hell did THAT come from?” After I had had the same physical reaction to unexpected close Ma encounters a couple of more times, I realized that my body had slightly reinterpreted the double block from Heian Sandan. Experiment with that and I’ll think you’ll find it a handy self defense interpretation. The moves at the end of the Kata with the turn with elbow and fist attacks I have reinterpreted a couple of times as my understanding deepened. I first learned that you are being grabbed from behind at the end of the Oizuki and the following moves are a response to that. For the longest time, I couldn’t figure the moves out with the grab from behind. As I, in turn, began to teach the Kata, I tried to find the answer. Practicing by myself one day, the “light came on”. It IS a grab from behind! When you move your left leg to the right and turn, it becomes a THROW, supported by your left elbow. Try working on that with an Uke and see what you think. I think that is one of Karate’s hidden throws.
I'm usually the uke (hope I spelt that right), it's nice to see someone else flinch like I do when a fist comes flying to the face, or grimace when an elbow or fist gets you in the mid-section. Great breakdown of the kata and bunkai.
I'm looking to regrade in November at 5th Kyu. I came from Go Kan Ryu (Over 20 years ago and I've just started training again) but now I'm taking Shotokan classes and training at home. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you kindly :)

Thank you for posting all of the katas. Can you please do a tutorial/ tips on how to perform the three kiba dachi steps in the middle of the kata? These are very tricky. Thank you. OSSS
Marvelous demonstration! I do Kyokushin so for us this is Pinan Sono San. There are only a few differences between Heian Sandan and Pinan Sono San. I like seeing different was of doing things. That is what makes karate interesting.
I graded on this one last december, and since then I have been sick and training has been down, and whatever, and now I have a problem recalling it ... But I think the version we do has a moon kick in it. It is fun looking att different styles and substyles doing the same kata.

I like the performance of the Kata! Great stability and strength. However, you should really check out Iain Abernathy for Bunkai... The bunkai you showed lacks realistic application and cannot be used in self-defense (or Kumite). Then why should it be called Bunkai?
Is it important to end at the same position as you start? I wondering hw I shall do this? Now I have watching your video and it seems that your are also a half step too much... but I guess thise right, isn't it?
It's best if you can go back to the same position! Be careful of the length of your stance! If you need any more help DM on Instagram! instagram.com/karate_dojo_waku/
Minor question, pivots on heal vs ball of toes in the Kata or otherwise. I use both but often balls of my toes more so to sustain balance and momentum during transition, on my heal I don't feel as balanced going forward esp. Could be just me, what is your reasoning may I ask? No wrong answers either really I can see, more curious if a preference?
hmmm this is only on the surface...but it's not the real bunkai. Iain Abernethy and Vince Morris are perhaps the best ones to look up for the actual bunkai for reality based attacks.

Didier Lupo is also great. By the way, I think Sensei Ian also practice Shotokan... And yes, concerning bunkai, I think he´s the best!
