This is the video that got me to subscribe. I have a question: I have attempted this with success on many people but it seems to work only once because my opponent ends up getting me in an arm triangle from the bottom (he's already got my head in position for it) before I get perpendicular to him. I do drive my elbow into his head. I do get up on my feet. Am I trying it on opponents too big for me? Have you ever experienced this? Any thoughts? Thanks!
@@mikemac9680 thanks a lot for subscribing! Couple of things to try, if you do cross your arm then don't lower your head so much, makes it much harder for them to lock up. You also need to make sure you're blocking their hip so that you can get around it to cut your angle. Failing all that, try the same pass but with a crossface instead of passing your arm over their head. Hope that helps!!
I have been trying too perfect this move. One of the details too make it more effective is by driving the elbow of the top side arm into the side of partners head. It is same as side control where your pressuring partners chin with your shoulder. This detail for me is more of getting complete control. It is key that you clear their hips with your hips and keeping that base wide and low. My initial mistake was taking little steps which allowed space for partner to push away to get back into guard. By driving elbow into side of head it keeps your partner from effectively using legs to retain guard. Even if they get back to guard reset position and keep doing it, because it will drain your partners endurance quick.
Thanks so much Brandon! I think this pass is kinda similar to the leg on shoulder pass, in that the fine details will take you from absolute failure to total success! You'll fail a lot till you get it all down haha
Roger hit a basic collar choke on Buchecha in his retirement match. If that doesn't SCREAM mastery, then I don't know what does. What an absolute legend
Best explanation I've ever seen and heard. Complete with possible mistakes that you can make and breakdowns of the different areas of the pass. The way you are based out at 3:01 mark is just amazingly done! You have a new fan and sub!
I have been playing around w/ this for awhile and found you can get the Americana very easily from this position. The pressure is so great that your opponent just gives you anything to get out of it.
I've been using this a lot, but missing some of the details, so the success rate was dropping off quite low against high blues/purples. I'll definitely incorporate some of these points and try it again. Thanks!
Have you ever taken part in Priit's class during globtrotters camp when he was talking about how great he is, how everyone thought he was wrong but he's right and a little bit about STACKING?
I have issues getting around to the side. When I move to the left their guard follows me even though I have the undertook etc. I need to keep them from moving when I move round somehow.
I do this. :L I kind of started do it when I was blue belt, just started doing it on my own .. but I never kept the hips that high to pass and didn't grab the leg, just kept hips low and they open it from the pressure
This smashpass is OP guys.. I use it for a few years since the Nick Brooks.. RG blackbelt show ed it.. Just focua on thr tight underhook and headblock withother arm...then enjoy destroyin your prey
Would love to have this pass work for me since I have a similar physique to R. Gracie but I have tried it a few times and have gotten my back taken by high level players here at Marcello Garcia’s academy in NYC. The part where it goes bad is when I bring my L arm over the persons head. There is nothing stopping them from circling to the back(minute 2:22) pls advise. Thank you professor.
Stick with it! It sounds like you're not stacking enough first, and that you're allowing them to free their hip to the side so they can take the back. You must fold them and block off that hip!
Would this work for shorter stocky guys like Matt hughes or Sean Sherk , do they have the weight or length? Is there a hack to get it to work for them?
Coach I do this pass but at the beginning they slip out to my back. When I first posture up and throw my L arm over their head they slip out to my left side for a back take. Not everyone bit the black belts at Marcelo Garcia’s in NYC do this to me. Would it be better to get the crossface with my L arm instead of throwing my L arm over their head so it blocks them? I understand the R arm underhook will prevent them from slipping out to my back on my R side but it’s the L side they get me. Pls advise. Thx coach. Love your videos!
Thanks John! It's really important that when you pass your left at over you're already cutting the angle to the left and getting their hips out from under you to your right hand side, then there's no way they can go to the back on that side. Of course, you can also do the pass with a crossface if you're still worried about that :) also, don't expect it to work on Marcelo Garcia black belts straight away! Haha 😃
Is there a counter if the person that has you in their guard holds tight guard and pushes you away with their hips and blocks your leg from walking around with their hand placed on your knee? We were experimenting with this last night and thats what we found to stop it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
when I tried this, the person on bottom caught me in a head&arm choke when I got the undertook and brought my head to one side. any advice on not getting caught in the head&arm? thanks!
@@InvisibleJiuJitsu One arm should keep block the opponent's head so that he can't recover guard, the other hand is a bit far away to open the crossed foot I guess? Anyway I want to try it again when the gym opens again.
I almost got caught with a arm triangle choke when i went to throw my right arm across with my elbow next to his head.. any way to stop this? is ti a timing/speed thing?
Good question. Not if you get your angle. Obviously if you underhook in guard and stay in front you're giving away a nice overhook to your opponent. Once you've out some reps into the position it should be pretty safe though! 😊
Tried it at class this morning finding it hard to circle without him spinning with me. Finding it hard to pass his butt as it were. Thoughts??? Maybe more underhook head and neck pressure??
Robert Van-Der Oort I’m having this same problem too. Not sure if you addressed it yet but I’m gonna try stacking more. One thing that I noticed is that you can use your leading knee to block your opponents hip temporarily as you move across. And it looks like from there you can take your second leg and use that low base to put pressure on that hip as a replacement. That might stop him
Good stuff. It's an interesting alternative to the Tozi pass. As a heavy dude I really like this, but I fear lighter people would just hate to roll with me after this... I feel like a guy with poor flexibility could get injured as well.
