I always had a soft spot for small shunters or switchers like we call them here in the US. Kind of the unsung heroes of locomotives.

One example of industrial activity (steel works, docks, shipbuilding, chemical works) could be seen in the 1950s-1960's along the main line from Middlesbrough to Saltburn-by-the-Sea on Teesside. The line to Darlington and Northallerton from Saltburn was used by suburban traffic, with twin articulated sets behind passenger tank and tender classes between, for instance, Cargo Fleet and Dorman Long steel works, ICI Chemical's paints and nylon division and the famous Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Ltd that constructed and assembled Sydney Harbour Bridge in the 1920's. Along the route also, towards the River Tees were the extensive docks and graving docks that built cargo and war ships as well as the later iron ore terminal. In the early hours (around 6.30 am) a Darlington Peppercorn A1 or York Gresley V2 left Saltburn for Kings Cross. This was the businessman's train that returned in the evening. There were also race specials for Redcar Racecourse, with its own platform. Trains from the Midlands and North West passed between the works with GC and LMSR engines heading long rakes of regional passenger stock as well as the newer Mark 1 stock. Until the late 50's trains left Middlesbrough for the coast route via Loftus to Whitby, and iron ore trains passed on their way from various ironstone mines in East Cleveland such as North Skelton, Kilton and Lingdale behind the widespread Class J26's and J27's shedded on Teesside.

Thanks Alan, there's some absolutely fantastic inspiration for modelling there and it just shows how many different themes you can combine into a single layout.

In later years of course, with local ironstone mines closing due to high costs (the last being North Skelton in 1964) and cheaper products arriving at the Ore Terminal near Teesmouth, the scene changed radically. Steam gave way to diesel, the most common being later classed as 25 and 37, and steel plants closed. The empty shells of Cargo Fleet works and part of Dorman Long at South Bank stood inland of the Saltburn branch, the Teesside Executive train was shelved and part of the Whitby line beyond Loftus was lifted beyond Skinningrove/Carlin How. The line was reinstated to Boulby for the new mine's potash trains to Teesside, affording dramatic scenery between Riftswood Viaduct at Saltburn and the line curving inland from Huntcliff - also near Saltburn - to Skinningrove Works, with the new steel viaduct that 'hovers' over the Loftus road's uphill 'Z' bends as it curves around from Boulby to Lackenby Works. The Redcar works that closed in the early 2000's still prospered, and behind them the smaller Warrenby Works, also recently decommissioned. A large part of the ICI complex was decommissioned, leaving some empty shells of buildings, decommissioned since the 1990's. The optimum time period for modelling is therefore 1962-1982 for diesel traffic as well as steam on some Saltburn-Darlington-Bishop Auckland suburban traffic. Thornaby's shed (51L) was completed for use in 1958, when steam locos from around the then defunct Teesside sheds were transferred.
    A railway modeller's 'heyday'.

Good luck with getting the packages. While their service is great Royal Mail is a terror. Im now on the fourth week of waiting... Not their fault tho, also ordered from other model railway websites the same day which hasnt arrived.
Edit: And the same day I write this reply, my packages show up woohoo. Somebody from DPD delivered the packages at the wrong adress.

Some ex-LNER/BR Class J94's were taken over by the NCB in the North East, some retaining their BR numbers and acquiring NCB numbers. The other 0-6-0 saddle tanks built by the same companies weren't classified J94. See LNER Encyclopaedia, Class J94 for the companies that built them for the Ministry of Supply during and after WWII

That's correct - a few have received BR colours in preservation but they're Austerities through and through.

I have two tiny Troublemaking Ruston Shunters. I haven't used them much on the Cat Valley Steam Railway. One Large Prairie Tank Engine of mine, whom I named after Sam's Trains, has somewhat tolerated them. As for Westminster, my Peckett B2 engine, she's in the wars. I took her back to Chester Model Shop with a broken rod. Paul Boyland hasn't yet managed to get the spare parts he needs to carry out repairs. With lockdown coming and going, I don't know if Westminster will ever be able to work on my railway again. I'm praying for good results. I miss Westminster very much, and I'm sure she's missing me in return.

Hiya Dave I am building a large layout in N'Gauge and I plan to include a Colliery and I have a soft spot for the class14 teddy bear locomotive and I am looking forward to Farish's latest batch of class14s

Great to hear it Stuart, it sounds like a fantastic project and the Class 14 is an ideal loco, especially in the NCB colour scheme.

The little red engine at 16:05 (against the brick houses) where is that located or what industry is this? It’s a charming scene.

Hi Chris, I understand that this is the Middleton Railway near Leeds, which operated some industrial traffic during its early days of preservation in the 1960s.

Oh Henry de Lacy II at 4:42 is that when it was working at Kirkstall forge or when it was preserved at middleton railway still working goods trains?

    • @HattonsModelRailways
      @HattonsModelRailways  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Taggart00, as far as we're aware this is a shot from the Middleton Railway but in the pioneering years when the line still carried some commercial traffic.

    Hello HATTONS
I believe everyone in UK gets in touch with HATTONS, so here I am trying to find a layout, that was on
TH-cam and he has a FB PAGE of the layout. THE FOLLOWING is from another TH-cam site I tried to find out but no such luck.
I was Browsing TH-cam the other day and came across SOMEONE having trouble with his INCLINE, he did have DCCCONCEPT Track Plates, like you have on your HELIX.
So I sent him a message on his TH-cam and he had a FACEBOOK Page as well, now I can not find both, :) must be a OLD AGE thing, so I am here asking you if you have come across him in your travel.
His UT started with BEECH........ or BEACH....... as was his FC page, a UK county somewhere. 18 ft x 8ft shed there was a full layout
    THANKS for your time
    Graeme
