At first I was like, "dang she is painting a Simpsons character." and then the painting dried and looked incredible. this seems so difficult to me. and it is why so far I haven't painting people yet. I don't like embarrassing myself. 😂
Finally, just what I was looking for in a long time: one magestic video tutorial with variable skin tons in watercolor. Thank you very much Kelly, it will help me to improve my paintings a lot! :D
Just what I was hoping you would publish! I've been working on faces and skin tones are so difficult - this is a big help -- I'm doing practice with your color combinations - just drew some nice circles and will see how they come out. Thanks so much
Kelly I just want you to know you are my artist role model I love the way you've pushed the boundaries in watercolor and especially the way you describe it when you paint! I watch your videos all the time for learning and just for the sake of enjoyment
Thanks again Kelly. Perfect face video to watch. Love this one too. Hopfully it will help my people painting. Heck of a time with face colors. Thats why I paint a lot of trees. I always upload you to my FB page. They enjoy.
Thank u Kelly you're the "BOMB" it is difficult to find workshops or techniques for different skin tones. Last year I was searching for something to assist me with "albino" skin never found it, sketch is still sitting here staring me in the face I was going to attempt it this spring can't stand it any more LOL THANK YOU THANK YOU BLESS YOU !!!! Ivanna
+iHanna I was on the verge of being very sick with a stomach bug last week, too. Painting this again was the last thing I wanted to do, but I've got to say I did a better job on the second version. :)
You're amazing! Thank you for this! I've come from a colored pencil/graphite background, and last year was the first year I dove into watercolor and ink painting. Skin tones are definitely something I want to conquer with watercolor, and this tutorial is awesome! Thank you!!
This is absolutely amazing! I am trying to rekindle my passion for art after having suppressed it for my entire adult life. It's an inner struggle but watching this gives me hope again.
Uwaaa! Must say this video REALLY helped. And I mean...REALLY. I've never had enough experience painting skin tones. I just find it so difficult to pick the right colors for the right skin tones and I've always been to scared they would look too bright and like monsters when it dried up. But you've made me understand that it's important to use A LOT of color. And basically I just have to study the picture I want to paint to try and "guess" the right color to use for skin tones. I need to practice practice practice... Thank you so much!
that looks like you used WAY more colours than i already have. but if there's anything i learnt from you on this video, it's that be bold; the colours will calm down anyway. thanks for the video (and implied interpreted tips)! xo
Thanks. Apart from being very talented, your delivery is very good, clear and to the point. i.e. you don't waffle on and on like some artists do on you tube. Well done
This is incredible!!! You're a gr8 teacher.... I'm one of those ppl who put on 2 layers and disgusted by the outcome of it. When u went for the third layer it was just magical!!!
Your art is awesome...!!! Congrats. I always mixed the watercolors for skintone before, I mean off the paper...I have to dare to try this way...Thanks for posting a new video. I was longing for it.
+Elvirita Thanks for your comment! I feel like the paper is where you can really make watercolor do great things for skin with this wet-into-wet technique. It always dries so smoothly and soft, a lot like real skin. :) Give it a try!
You're so good I bought myself a brush, some watercolor paper, paint (primary colors and white) and masking fluid. Let's see what I can do, guess I must begin with color studies since I have only these colors, haha. Thanks for sharing and teaching so many nice things.
I've watched this several times since it's been on the channel, Kelly, and what I've learned this time to remind myself is that on layer one, it's ok if the edges and blending in the first layer look to hard/harsh (e.g upper left quadrant) and can be softened with additional layers; often, when you think you've gone too dark, letting it dry lets it soften.
Thank you SO SO much for this video! I'm still fairly new to watercolor and I was having the HARDEST time figuring out skin tone. Especially brown ones, I was so disappointed with how light they turned out thank you thank you!!!! Your videos are always so helpful!
I was actually looking for a video on acryclic skin tones and stumbled on this. Totally got sucked in watching it. Amazing talent and you have one of the most relaxing voices. Kind of reminded me of Bob Ross. Liked and subscribed, I look forward to watching more!
I loved! What I do like to do also is sometimes use diferent kind of colors and paint a face. Blue with green or yellow with red. Givs such a different look and perspective for a paint.
+Denis Pinheiro Very cool! I'm more of a realistic painter, so I find myself envying people do things like that. Color can add so much emotion to a face.
I'm an oil painter/drawer/printmaker and I am terrible with the transparentness of watercolors. For some reason I blurted out that I'd be watercoloring my prints for my final at my university, and now I've got to walk the walk. These videos have been helping me tremendously in the practice paintings I've done. In just a few days of watching them, my watercolors have gone from washed out pastels to pretty vibrant renditions. So thank you~
Beautiful. I would have loved to see you remove that dark spot near the nose. Whenever I do it my paper seems to suffer. You make it all look so easy Kelly!
I just rubbed it with the end of a damp paintbrush and then absorbed as much as I could with a tiny bit of dry paper towel. Watercolor paper is coated with a gel-like substance that makes lifting like this relatively easy. It's actually pretty satisfying! :D < This was Kelly's response to another comment asking the same thing
Thank you for your tutorials. I am an absolute beginner and have found them educational and entertaining. I'm learning so much each day. Your an amazing artist.
I just love your work. Thanks so much for doing what you do! Lately I've been so inspired by pre raphalite paintings.. I know they are typically oil.. But to get the lumanicity in watercolor I'm sure it's very possible. Thanks so much for the video. Great advice and encouragment. Everytime I watch your video's I'm inspired to just pick up a brush and get started on some of the techniques you showcase.
These are amazing! I did my first portrait in watercolour a fair while back and was so scared to use different colours, i did go a lil darker on the neck but seeing this now.... I know i was scared of using other colours and my paper always had too much to too littler water all the time. Thank you heaps for helping out :d.
Thank you for another awesome video Kelly! In the future, can you please make a video about watercolor paper? I want to learn more about what kind of paper I should buy for projects and practice, how to prepare the paper so I can start working on it, what kind of tape I should use, and what kind of pencil is suitable for drawing on watercolor paper. I'm a beginner in watercolor and this kind of video would be helpful to me.
Kelly, please consider uploading the videos in unaltered speed of painting (with talk through or voice-over). I really enjoy your videos with your relaxing voice and I wish they lasted longer, like an hour or two! :P
This was really cool and helpful! I think it would be interesting to see you paint a few faces with the same values but different undertones to show how the undertones really, really affect the final color :)
I love this art work! The tiles remind me of pop art where one image is in different colors but its beautiful that its different skin tones! Great video as always!
I remember when I was younger, I was coloring a person of color and used an orange color first not even knowing this method, then colored over with a darker color. It felt awesome and I didnt even know this was actually a thing.
+Cori Jaye Elston I used to paint with acrylics, but I kept thinning them down to watercolor consistency. Maybe it's a texture thing for me. I prefer wateriness to stickiness, so much respect to people who can paint with acrylics!
+Kelly Eddington Watercolors I used to use so many colors until I found your texture practice video. That has really helped me simplify my color choices yet still bring detail to my commissions!
+FarlyCreates Wow, that's wonderful! I learned watercolor from a true master, and I use something like four more colors than he did. But I've been using these core colors since college and never saw the need to buy more. I think that's why I think mixing colors is easy. I've used the same ones for most of my life, and I know how they work together. Good luck with your commissions! :)
+julihaba Ooh, good question. I don't know if I could really do that beyond what I've done here, but honestly I just really study what I'm trying to paint first. With some people you just know. It's obvious. For example, people with red hair often have an overall pinkish skin tone. I always start with the lightest color I see, and if I'm looking at a medium to light skin tone it's usually yellow or occasionally pink. Some super pale people (like myself) can even be kind of light blue. I'll paint that first, and then I get progressively darker. With reference photos, putting the photo next to a white piece of paper can help you see what's going on. It's kind of like cooking. If you get used to cooking the same kind of recipe over and over again, you can taste it and sort of know if it needs more salt or oregano or whatever, and that kind of thing comes with a lot of trial and error and practice. Same with painting. Hope this helps you! :)
I'm just learning and I am thrilled to have happened upon this video. I haven't gone to school, and youtube has a generous amount of tutorials that I have watched since May. I am trying to figure out how to create a mermaid underwater, (for a friend) and I am not sure about what comes first.....background or the foreground. Any thoughts or advice?
I LOVE the way you painted the dark tones there’s never anyone on TH-cam (that I can find) that does
I never knew how to make proper skin tones with accurate undertones but now I somewhat understand💯💯💯👍
this might sound stupid, but thank's a lot for picking positive adjectives to describe darker skin tones
PS: you're stunninggggg
you should be an art teacher.. my art teachers only told us to draw something specefic.. they never guided us or even give us any tips..
Safak Frank I think she was an art teacher
I FEEL YOU
Right? Mine didnt even create art at all!
At first I was like, "dang she is painting a Simpsons character." and then the painting dried and looked incredible. this seems so difficult to me. and it is why so far I haven't painting people yet. I don't like embarrassing myself. 😂
😂😂😂
I'm the same way
nifty Mix thats the progress of adding more colors to blend with it. also its been 11 months so do yiu still have that problem?
Dew it! (Yes I said "dew" lol)
Brenton Morgan you should try ! You never learn if you don’t try !
Finally, just what I was looking for in a long time: one magestic video tutorial with variable skin tons in watercolor. Thank you very much Kelly, it will help me to improve my paintings a lot! :D
this is the first tutorial for painting skintones i've seen that included darker colors !!! thank you so much
Just what I was hoping you would publish! I've been working on faces and skin tones are so difficult - this is a big help -- I'm doing practice with your color combinations - just drew some nice circles and will see how they come out. Thanks so much
ugh I've been looking for a good video on skin tones lately in watercolour and your video came just at the perfect time 😊 thank you very much.
+BIOnerd93 How about that? Happy I thought to do this when I did!
it's great :) I laughed so hard at Mr. Red lips! I had written that comment before I even watched the whole video!
Kelly I just want you to know you are my artist role model I love the way you've pushed the boundaries in watercolor and especially the way you describe it when you paint! I watch your videos all the time for learning and just for the sake of enjoyment
+Rachel Katz What a lovely thing to say. Thank you so much, Rachel! Comments like this make these videos worthwhile for me. :)
Thanks again Kelly. Perfect face video to watch. Love this one too. Hopfully it will help my people painting. Heck of a time with face colors. Thats why I paint a lot of trees. I always upload you to my FB page. They enjoy.

Thank you for being so detailed and for paying so much attention to deeper skin tones.
Great video, I appreciate you taking the time to film it twice. A camera out of focus sucks!
+iHanna I was on the verge of being very sick with a stomach bug last week, too. Painting this again was the last thing I wanted to do, but I've got to say I did a better job on the second version. :)

This is exactly the watercolor tutorial I'm trying to find!
Thank you so much for uploading this.

Your videos help me understand watercolors more, your techniques and choice of colors are superb! I'm a huge fan of yours! :)
+James So sweet of you to say, James, thanks!
This is incredible!!! You're a gr8 teacher.... I'm one of those ppl who put on 2 layers and disgusted by the outcome of it. When u went for the third layer it was just magical!!!

Thank you Kelley for all your awesome instructional videos! I have learned a lot from them. And thanks to your hubby for the great title sequence.
Whenever I watch any of your videos I want to grab my watercolors and paint!! your technique is just brilliant!
I'm an oil painter/drawer/printmaker and I am terrible with the transparentness of watercolors. Beautiful. I would have loved to see you remove that dark spot near the nose. Whenever I do it my paper seems to suffer. You make it all look so easy Kelly!

This really was helpful. I only recently started doing layers to create different tones.
Thank you for your tutorials. I am an absolute beginner and have found them educational and entertaining. I'm learning so much each day. Your an amazing artist.

God, this is just amazing! I'm trying to get better by painting skin with watercolors but I'm sure that I'll never be like you. You're incredible
Very very beautiful work love how you painted different skin tones and each look beautiful

Thanks Kelly for doing all of these helpful tutorials! They really have helped!
+Vera Soliman Cool! You're welcome.
Thank you for another awesome video Kelly! In the future, can you please make a video about watercolor paper? Very inspirational! I love watching you paint! Awesome!
it is amazing what colors you can train your eyes to see! this was fun to watch!

+1960genius So are you! :D Thanks very very much.
Wood! your voice is the most amazing thing in the word!! I loved!
I remember when I was younger, I was coloring a person of color and used an orange color first not even knowing this method, then colored over with a darker color. It felt awesome and I didnt even know this was actually a thing.
Thank you so much for showing how to do darker skin tones as well! 😁😁
You have made my day. Now, I have a good watercolor skin tone video. Thank you.
+Sarah Albritton You're welcome! Thanks for your sweet comment. You're making me want to do more! :)
loved this video :) I'm an acrylic painter and always fascinated by water colour
+Cori Jaye Elston I used to paint with acrylics, but I kept thinning them down to watercolor consistency. Maybe it's a texture thing for me. I prefer wateriness to stickiness, so much respect to people who can paint with acrylics!
Beautiful and helpful as always! Thank you so much for showing such different skin tones and stating the exact colors you mixed!
+FarlyCreates You're welcome. I try to keep my colors simple--some artists use dozens and dozens.
This was mesmerizing to watch. Amazing talent! Thank you.

The really dark skined look absolutly magicial ✨
You're an amazing artist, Kelly!
Thanks for drawing this two times, i learning a lot from it!! You are such a great artist 😍
You are an outstanding artist. I'm in awe.
If you want to eliminate the glare, I'd recommend looking into reflectors and diffusers. There are plenty of budget and DIY options out there. 😉
I always learn SO sososo so much from you!! thanks for everything you upload. you are a great artist and a very considerate teacher !
+s monzon Aww, that's sweet of you to say. Thanks a lot.

+Mariam Sathar Thanks for the kind words, Mariam!
Really helps me just got done doing a couple of watercolor pieces on my channel. Thanks for the video just subscribed!!!
Ahhhhh I have done much trouble with skin tones but you make them look beautifully easy
Very beautiful! :D
+PimpManFan Thank you! I love the variety of skin tones in the world.
sambeawesome שששששדדדדדדדשש
Absolutely perfect video! I’m totally a newbie this video helped a lot! Thank you! 6:20
Thank you so much, now I can finish my friends portrait.
+Ashanti B Hooray! Glad I could help you, Ashanti. :)
This helped me a lot too. Doing larger pieces and the colour value is so much better. Thank you! Is the paper up on a slant or flat?
It sure would be nice to be able to see the entire board
Thank you
You posted! I'm so happy!
+Fatima .K Yay! Sorry, I've been kind of sick this month. Better now!
+Kelly Eddington Watercolors Glad to hear that!
I love your videos! Youre such an inspiration to young amateur artists ♥♥
Thank you for the tutorial! You could make a video of how do you recognize the base color of a face?
OMG! This is really helpful for me! I've been searching how to color skin! THANKS SO MUCH! SERIOUSLY!
+Bebbie SA Great! I had no idea so many people were looking for something like this. :)
Always enjoy your stuff- this was super helpful thank you!!
+Jess Anderson Thanks a lot, Jess!
You're so talented. It's amazing to see
amazing job to the both of you I love it thank you for sharing this have a bless day
thank you for painting darker skintones realistically! its much appreciated
Wow, really helpful, and beautiful! Keep up the good work.
+Julie Mendez (Katicorn) Thanks so much! I really enjoyed dealing with the variety here. :)
amazzzing bold of colour using 😍😍😍
You're simply amazing! Great demo!
you are sooo courageous in your powerful choice of colors! ( p.s.-you are very pretty!)
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you
