  • It's easy to see why there is such confusion with this. Ed played the Bb live, but he played the A in the original recording (Second Helping). I prove it in this video.

You are the man Scott! I had learned it off the album back in the day and have always played it with the ‘A’ to ‘B’ and I knew you were correct to the original recording. What’s sad is that now that people have so many more resources they live to jump on folks over the tiny details even though you haves played countless live shows of these songs and even played with Skynyrd members. The original players weren’t even as nit-picky as some of the internet geniuses of today. Good on you sir!!

Scotty...no matter this is in controversy....I personally like the the A best but that's the way I taught myself. I like the hammer on better than the slide. Don't really care what anyone else thinks....hehe Probably the most iconic lick ever. There actually is a clip on youtube that Ed plays it with the Bb...so? I like it with the A and I'm stickin to it! Rock on bro

Ohh brother ....I can't believe people get bent out of shape over this when the guy who wrote it & recorded it didn't care about the "one note" because he played it both ways!!!
We call these people trolls because they'll argue over one damn note!!!
The fact you had to make this video is pretty sad and I think Ed is either getting a belly laugh or shaking his head in disbelief over this lol

Years ago I remember seeing Ed King playing this with Marty Schwartz , & he had his take on how he originally had played this iconic riff . I believe he said he slid into his note as was done originally & also if I’m not mistaken said it could be played either way as you just demonstrated & would still work , and 90 % of people wouldn’t notice at all . Thanks for breaking this one down again as a refresher course . 😎👍

Does anyone not change up licks after playing a song 200+ times ? If i am remembering the interview with Cooper he said Ronnie called and said he had a new song and wanted to get in on tape asap before it changed or lost it edge. Cooper booked them right into Atlanta and they cut sweet home alabama. Love what you do for everybody Scott.

Funny I just seen another guy talk about that on his page. It showed Ed playing the song live and he showed Ed’s fingers moving from the B to A. I thought cool another way to play that lick. Doesn’t every player change their licks up a bit to add something different to the monotony of playing the same riffs day in and day out. lol. How many times have you heard Allen play Freebird a bit different live and Gary too on his licks? No one’s gonna pick that out playing live except the nerds that never play outside of their bedroom. 😂

In studying all the footage I could find, it looked to me that Ed played the b flat on the intro riff, but plays the A when the rest of the band and vocals join through the end of the song. May have been because it was easier to play starting with the A for the rest of the band?...

Obvious to me to man!!! A! And takes alot of nerve for anyone to question you or try to call you out on something so trivial, the work you have put in to playing Skynyrd songs to play them ACCURATELY, ya the nerve of some people!! Sad. I've learned so much from you Scott and you are the man. Thank you for your dedication to continuing the Lynyrd Skynyrd legacy and sharing it with others, mad respect to you and APB!! Still following you man and can't wait to see you guys again!
