You know, I’m not quite sure that people know how hard it is to play a song like that on guitar and sing at the same time. Sting makes it look easy, but something like that takes quite a bit of practice because the hands are not following the vocal melody, while the guitar part has a melody all it’s own. A lovely song.
I play and sing it too but in a simplified version. Just em7/am7/B7/em7 for the verses and am7/ B7/em7/em7 for the chorus. I do a lot of busking and its a nice song to stand out a bit. You can listen to my version if you like here. th-cam.com/video/nxQT-g5jHVs/w-d-xo.html Its not as good as his version of course but some songs I have to sing by myself. I hope he doesnt mind.
which is why a response on here from a fellow musician always carries more weight than the general public, who have never played music themselves, and don't understand the complexities such as the one you pointed out.
This song was written by Sting as a tribute to Benjamin Linder killed by the contras in Sandinista Nicaragua in the 1980s. He came to Nicaragua to build a power plant in a remote village called Bocay.
I listen to this all the time. It calms me. It sometimes makes me cry. It sometimes makes me feel good. That is what music is all about and I thank you Sting.
Seeing him this old, makes me realize just how long ago all of those "good times" were back in college during the 1980's. I'm glad we lived through the 1980's when we were young. That was our time - although I'm enjoying these days just as much!
My tears are flowing , as they have always, when listening to this song. Now tonight, the song transports me back to my home town of Stockholm, all those years ago. I can instantly smell the city, se my friends, in my minds eye. My old surroundings. My roots .And tonight my tears are flowing for the fact that I cannot go back to connect with it all .
@@hardlines2635 I don't mind that, but on a proper recording they would filter that stuff out. It's the top 3 wire-wound bass strings that really scrape (EAD)
Sting is the best. My childhood moved with him. One of the best memories as kid, was to listen to his songs on tape, on our now old, Hitachi record player.
TO ME, THIS WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS STING EVER WROTE. HIS GUITAR PLAYING IS OTHER WORLDLY. SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG THAT WILL LAST TIL ALL OF INFINITY
“I love you and I love your music even more.” Anni Lenox- I agree with Anni. I saw Sting in concert about thirty years ago in Toronto and when he got to this song I was weeping. This song brings back so many memories. I first heard this song when I was suffering with PTSD of getting hit by a drunk driver and losing my memory due to the head and neck injury and concussion. I developed many disabilities in the aftermath and as a result of that horrid accident…” how fragile we are”.💔❤️🩹 Sting I grew up with your music in high school from listening to the police songs and then listening to your solo creations and jazz songs , collaborating with many great artists like with Chris Botti and beyond. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for always breaking ground with your song writing and uplifting music.
An absolute classic, beautiful song. Melody stays with you forever! It is beyond me how there are over 80 "thumbs down"!! I appreciate that we all have our very personal taste in music, but...I don't know how *this* song can be disliked....
Keep practicing. It's not that difficult. A lot of shifting patterns on the left hand. A few barre chords. There are a lot harder pieces to play out there. Keep practicing. You'll get there. If not, get a teacher. Your technique might be wrong. Good luck
Sting , live for ever ,,, one of the most unique voice and feeling , I have heard many and many people who covered his songs but no one can did it greater than him .
this is terrific. I just saw Sting in Brisbane last week. He may be 71 but omg he is a master of his art. Great concert he played this there. Hi son was opening up the concert for him he was very good too, sounds a bit like Bono from U2
Back in the 80's I taught Sting tennis in Montecito, CA, right before they released Syncronicity, and it was definitely one of my career highlights. Sting's a good athlete and he picked up the game guick.
I hope you get this. So people call me you might be your blessings. I'm fantastic. So on and on. Can we pause for a sec and be in AWE of sting not only sounding amazing but playing it in perfect timing!..im a guitar player myself and this is incredibly difficult. One of my favorite songs from a favorite time in my life. Im gonna just simmer in the moment.
Man, this is not that difficult to play compared to some stuff I've played. There are a lot of shifting chord patterns on the left hand and a few barre chords but nothing challenging or major stretches. I don't see this as difficult. I do, however, think it belongs on a nylon strung CG as per the original. The steel string sounds bit too harsh.
It is so good to see (hear) the great musicians of the 'rock era' returning to their roots and singing to excellent solo acoustic guitar. A guitarist colleague who had a two year tour with a charting band said the best satisfaction he had was an unpaid gig singing Christmas Carols with his acoustic guitar for a children's party.
Thank you for great music video Gordon, or Sting. You are the star that shall brighten our lives and can't be forgotten. I wish I see you performing live near Reading, Berkshire in a future once more. Take care, God bless.

Sting.. you've picked the best song of all to sing for us right now....
I've seen Sting in concert and he ended the concert with this song and it was so beautiful and yes I could tell how difficult it was to play.

I never get tired or bored with sting’s music
The Master at his craft. A flagship song that gets better over time as it becomes timeless. From one musician to another, I salute you, mate.
Stings Raspy voice combined with the acoustic guitars pickups, hearing every slide across the strings is pure bliss. Such a powerful song !
I can’t stand the sound of scraping the strings like that.
