To understand why Grandpa is patting his pockets at the end at 1:04:18 you have to know that the actor is Peter Falk who stared in the long-running TV series, Columbo. His character, Columbo, is a seemingly absent-minded homicide detective who is really very clever, but he is always patting is pockets trying find a pencil or a pad or something. So when Peter Falk pats his pockets at the end of The Princess Bride, he is giving those of us who know him as Columbo a funny little Easter Egg reference to his character on TV.
An entire generation now doesn't know these cultural icons. Like they don't recognize Billy Crystal on sight. Or is it that pop culture references have expiration dates :(
I've watched this movie dozens of times, and I only recently realized something. Just like Westley defeated Inigo, Fezzik, and Vizzini with their strengths, he defeated Prince Humperdink with his. It's not as clear in the movie, but in the book they make a big deal out of Humperdink's bravery. But Westley intimidated him into surrendering, i.e. he "out-braved" him.
This is one if my top 1 favourite movies. And I highly recommend the book! The script for the movie was written by the same person who wrote the book, and he was already an accomplished screenwriter.
When I first saw this it was with my college roommate. My first thought was, "Great... A lovey dovey fairy tale for girls..." But, I was pleasantly surprised. The story and the comedy are good. I watched this with my daughter on her 4th birthday and we have watched it every year on her birthday since. We just watched it in May again for her 21st birthday. She loves Fezzik the Giant.
A few years before the Princess Bride came out, the then Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. The sermon was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. His Grace had a rather high pitched voice and sibilant pronunciation, so the priest in this movie is a parody of that.
Mandy and Cary spent months training with an Olympic fencer, and the fight scene was extended because they both got so good, even able to fence with either hand. the only part they had a stand in for was the swinging from the bar.
7:26 Vizzini “No more rhymes now, I mean it” Fezzik “Anybody want a peanut?” I’m not sure if you realised Fezzik was still rhyming, I doubt he had peanuts. 😂😉
“Yes, you’re very smart…….Shut up.” And “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife!” Two of the best lines in film. Plus maybe “Let me explain. (Pause) No, there’s too much, let me sum up.”
This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack also is has one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"
The book is a real book. “The Princess Bride” by William Goldman. In the book, it says it’s by The name S Morganstern, which is a made-up name that Goldman created to give it the ruse that it was an already written book being read to the grandson. And, the book is told exactly like the movie. A grandfather reading a book to his grandson. And, the reason it’s called “The Princess Bride” is because when Goldman asked his two little daughters what his next book should be about, one of them said “About a princess!” and the other one said, “About a bride!” So, he just merged them together and wrote a story to fit both. Truly a beautiful treasure for everyone.
I used to think eels were small, but I have been to aquariums with eels about the size in this movie. In Venezuela, the electric eels are up to 2m in length, 20kg in weight, and deliver 860 volt shocks.
Andre the Giant was a professional wrestler,,,he held the UnOfficial Record for Number of ColdBeers(12oz.Bottles) Consumed in One Sitting. ,,,,,,,150🍺,,,✔️’Out some of his Match's - He was a Sight to Behold.🌎
I have read that many of Andre's wrestling opponents wore masks, making his admonition to Inigo that men in masks can't be trusted a subtle easter egg.
Great Reaction..... Everyone comments about how "Over the Top" this movie is and how "Useless" Buttercup is.... Reminder, You are watching this from the Imagination of an 8 year old boy who is listening to a story....... The Grandfather is best known for his role "Columbo" a Detective TV movie series in the 1970's... The Grandson was the lead from the TV show "Wonder Years"...... Fesik is played by Professional Wrestler Andre the Giant, He Past Away to Young at Age 46..... The Cliff-Top Duel was practiced by Wesley & Indigo, through-out the filming and one of the last things filmed..... And is considered one of the best filmed duels in movie history, and all but the gymnastic flips is the actual actors..... When 6-Fingered Man hit Wesley on the Head, it was a real hit and put the actor for Wesley in the hospital.... The Director had to leave the set when Filming the Miracle Max scenes cause the Actor Billy Crystal kept making him laugh.... If you notice, when Indigo delivers the line "I want my Father Back...." the actor drops the spanish accent, one reason is he was channeling how he felt about loosing his Father to Cancer.....
The screenplay is by William Goldman, who also wrote the novel that the screenplay is based on. There are parallels in the structure between the two, and the book is a lot of fun. Goldman was a wonderful screenwriter, who knew his stuff. He said he had the basic idea when one of his daughters asked for a story about a princess and the other one asked for one about a bride. And, well, there you go.
So many reactors miss a very key aspect of Inigo's chase of Count Rugen and Montoya's wounding by Rugen. If I'm not mistaken, just before giving Westley the Miracle Pill on the castle's battlement, Inigo kisses the Miracle Pill. Miracle Max is such a wonderful wizard, his medicine works even on such a grievous wound as Inigo's. So our Spanish Hero is saved by Miracle Max and allows the escape of our merry band.
Jill Bearup has a channel with 2 delightful & short videos on the sword fights in this movie. Highly recommended. And the dread pirate Roberts' ship was named "Revenge", meaning that Inigo was still in the revenge business.
The Princess Bride is a classic -- it is both a spoof of and an homage to Medieval fantasy stories. It laughs at itself -- is deliberately silly and over the top. But it is all done with love and respect for the genre -- and with a great sword fight. The fight between Inigo Montoya and the Dread Pirate Roberts at the top of the Cliffs of Insanity is excellent. As Vizzini would say, This movie? Inconceivable!
Andres actual height was 6'10" Im 6'5" and people look in aww at me but low camera angles and he stood on boxes to over exaggerate his heigh his wrestling height went as high as 7'4"
@@michaelcartmell7428 Nah. His interest is in others' pain. Based on how quickly he bolted when Inigo first confronted him, he's a coward who probably can't take what he gives out.
much better edit on this one, small note would be bring up the volume of the movie and your mic down a little. im happy you liked this one, and i look forward to your next movie.
I think the cast and crew had great difficulty keeping their composure during the filming of this scene. Difficult to act when you are cracking up with laughter.
Oh, the book has the same framing device, except it's a father trying to get his son to read the book by S. Morgenstern (which isn't real). It's a lot more complex than that though. I can't recommend it enough.
Why are you such a disbeliever in the power of true love? Jajaja! I thought your cynicism at the beginning of the movie about true love was very entertaining. And then your reaction to her dream of being married was great as well. I think you were more distressed than the grandson was. Jajaja! Great reaction to one of my fav movies. As others have said in the comments, I have watched this many times as in the end it is just such a feel good movie. Plus it has everything, sword fighting, horse riding, sailing, wrestling, piracy, true love, torture ... and whatever else was on the list at the beginning. 😁
Great Movie This'll be Fun!!!,,such a Classic,,,almost forgotten if not for cableTV where it had gained Cult Status then Flowered and Actually probly Way More exposure Now than then..just such'a GreatFlick!🌎
Wow, you all don't eat peanuts as a snack in Venezuela? Very few grocery or convenience stores in the US are missing a array of peanuts in their snack aisle. And where I live, a special delicacy is having peanuts slow-boiled in salt water.
It's honestly *BEAUTIFUL* that you didn't understand the whole wine cup exchange, and Vizzini's strategy. Because you were too busy talking and showing off how smart you were. 🤣 So meta! 😂
I am going to offer you some constructive criticism. You seem like a sweet young woman with a nice personality, and these criticisms are meant to be helpful and not to tear you down. I don't underestimate the difficulty in doing these reactions, and the fact that you're putting yourself out there says a lot about you. 1. Try to limit your "play by play" calls on your reaction. Your viewers are watching the same scenes you are. They don't need to be told what is going on as well. 2. Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems you are concentrating so hard on the scene and trying to anticipate where the movie is going, that you miss a lot of gold. For example, commenting on the music ques used during the sword fight or Inigo bouncing off the locked door chasing after Count Rugen. Making general comments about the lighting of a scene or your opinion about the quality of the writing or directing of the film. Was the casting of the actors correct in your view, or would another actor be better IYHO. Your subscribers want to hear your thoughts, experience your laughter, and feel your tears. 3. Try to keep your commentary short and concise. It's challenging, but you're smart enough, and have a fun personality so you'll get the confidence and feel for it. This is probably the toughest judgement call. Am I saying too much or am I becoming a spectator without offering enough insight. 4. To make things easier on you, if you can make it work financially, hire an editor. They can really edit your reaction so you can make your comments without talking over the scene too much. If you're unable to afford an editor, there are tutorials that will help you enhance your editing and further evolve your work. My opinion might be off base and if you find it to be invalid criticism, you could be right. I don't have a monopoly on wisdom and I'm not an expert on TH-cam reactions. Just a fan with some thoughts. Keep on reacting, Venezuelan girl, and enjoy yourself.

Very interesting- I have watched Columbo before but never realized that.
Also, it's a nice touch to indicate age. Glasses, wallet, medication, keys... Old folks, always putting something down and forgetting.
An entire generation now doesn't know these cultural icons.
Like they don't recognize Billy Crystal on sight.

Andre was a true gentle giant may he rest in peace
and his wrestling name was... wait for it... "Andre the Giant"
There is a theory that Inigo recovered from the wounds because he bit off the end of the miracle pill.
And if he didn't bite it he did hold it in his mouth for a second or two when he needed to use his hands.
As good a theory as any.

The priest was written that way in the original novel, from 1973, eight years before Charles & Diana were married.
It is a funny, silly story about true love. I am happy you enjoyed it.
Ahem. It's spelled "twue wuv."
Mandy and Cary spent months training with an Olympic fencer, and the fight scene was extended because they both got so good, even able to fence with either hand. the only part they had a stand in for was the swinging from the bar.

Love this movie. Great reaction.
This was my wife and I first date in 1987, we have watched it several times in the last 35 years.
That's awesome!
If no one said it, there are only 2 stunts in the whole sword fight. It was ALL Mandy and Cary! Left and right handed

Men in Tights and he has a natural English accent unlike those others.
