Maybe the neighbour’s wife died in the car accident and the neighbour become depressed and started acting violently towards his children, so they ran away. Scared.
The neighbour soon realised this and put missing posters everywhere. A demon (the weird black thing) said that it can bring his children back and so, the desperate neighbour agrees for the demon to help him but instead, the demon made the children scared and end up killing them. The boy was killed by the demon(?) and the girl died in a rollercoaster.
The neighbour got mad at the demon and locked it in the basement so that no one will experience the same thing as he did
So maybe the neighbour was only trying to protect you? Idk it’s just a theory (my English is not that good,sorry)

If anybody is still watching this series wondering what the story is, here it is.
The neighbor had a regular family. A wife, a son, and his youngest kid, a daughter. The neighbor and his wife went out on a date one day, but the neighbor accidentally crashed his car and killed his wife. His wife then died in the hospital. He went home to his kids, distraught. The son was devastated, and the little girl didn’t understand what was going on, so continued playing with her brother. Her brother ended up being sad and depressed and angry, accidentally pushing his sister off the house, which is what the roller coaster represented. The girl died. The neighbor got so mad at the son he threw him in the basement and locked him in, which explains the screaming. The boy turns skinny from not being able to eat much, and his hair goes all scraggly. The black figure is the boy...locked in the basement.

Dan my theory is similar to Victor's but different in the car crash the wife is only gravely injured but later dies in the hospital after. The neighbour's son lets you out out of the basement because he is angry that his father locked him in the basement after killing his sister. The next dream explained this. The roller coaster is a timeline because there is three different periods in it. Happiness,sorrow and death. The happiness period is before the wife dies. The second is after his wife dies. The third explains how the brother killed his sister. Since he operated it, the hands at the front of the cart at the final period is his. The roof is where he killed his sister because you can see the clouds. The reason he locked the ladder to the roof because that is where the brother killed his sister. You are partly right about the "cover his back" thing because if he told everyone that his son killed his daughter,he would lose his last family member. That explains why he locked him in the basement.The shadow is seeking retribution because he let his daughter die and was unable to tell the truth about the murder. So really the loss of his family drew him mad, but before all this he was loving and caring father.And now the shadow will haunt him forever.

Hey Dan, Here is my theory
As the story continues we saw the neighbor getting into a car crash. If you look around that area, there is a lady shoe which show his wife as long with his family died in the car wreak. After the car wreak there is also another scene of a hospital. That scene is where the family died with him and he live hidden and alone. Once again there is a scene of a grave which is his family grave. With the family gone, he decided to kidnap 3 kids which explain the missing poster. One kid (you) escape his house but a girl (didn't escape) and a boy (also didn't escape) was lock away in the basement. Once again there is a scene that shows him crying in front of a poster. This is him in guilt of kidnapping those kids. O.K. let's go back when you are a little kid. He kidnap you because you enter his home but you shortly escape. But in the last cut scene shows you with a scared face looking back at the neighbor. As you grow older you moved to a hotel, then back to your childhood home. Then you went in side the house and went to sleep on the couch. So from there till the end is now a dream ... well a nightmare. In your dream, you are remembering where you were when you are younger. I don't know what the black monster name is but I'll call him shadow man. Nearly all the scenes after the car wreak, the shadow man is in every scene with him. That is his fear and guilt with him that follows him everywhere. He doesn't want anyone knowing what he have done so he doesn't have any friend or want anyone around. The houses he build is each room he remember that he went or live with his family. At the part the neighbor is a giant, there is a small room on his back. That is everything that would stay with him forever. At the exit door it's just another room with just pure whiteness but has a door and the neighbor in a small room lock away from the shadow man. That is the neighbor never going to get away from his fear. The shadow man is also our fear as well. There is also another small game of us in a home with our grown-up version of you (the controllable) and a kid version of you (A.I) when you are smaller. That is the fear attacking the younger version of you and every time you block the shadow man swipe, you get bigger and stronger. After you grown higher and strong than the shadow man, you are able to defeat the fear and the fear never returns. The neighbor never got to defeat his fear so he burn down the house as well with the basement with him in it from the guilt, fear, and loneliness. He most likely burn down the house because the room he lock him self in (at the end) has some burnt spots on that room. We would never see him again and you are the only one who know what happen to the missing kids and him and his house.

So I think that The neighbour had a car crash with his daughter and she got killed, he got depressed and got (Or already had) a son and he was a bit wrong in the head, and one day his mental problems get really bad and so the neighbour locks him in the basement but then he either dies or gets kidnapped and the shadows are coming back to haunt the neighbour and remind him of his son and daughter.

your theory is really good but what if the neighbor had the boy and the girls death drove the boy mad so to try to get rid of the guilt he locked the boy away so he wouldn't have to see what his mistake did to his son ( especially since he was probably dealing with his own) and the boy became the shadow monster thing? Just an idea to maybe figure out why the boy was locked down in the basement.

I think that the neighbor ran over one of his children and was so traumatized that he locked up his other child so nothing could happen to him again.
Then the neighbor died and the kid escaped, he didn't remember cause of all the years that had passed, and he is having horrible flash backs of his childhood.

I’m a woss and so I watch this just to give me a lil chill lol
My theory is that the neighbor was in a wreck with his family and his family died so he felt bad but wanted kids so he kidnapped kids and took care of them in the basement and you or your character was one of those kids but you were able to escape. You move back and he had died in a fire (que his burnt down house) you take a nap and dream about the 3rd act about facing your fears (black light creatures) he never got over his fears or his conscience and it finally took over his life. When you are protecting the boy you are protecting your younger self from your demons and fear, and you "grow" as you conquer your fears until you are able to destroy those fears. The last scene of the neighbor is him trapping himself in a room hiding from his fears,demons, and conscience.

i know a lot of people have said this, but i’m pretty sure the neighbor and his wife were in a car crash, and the wife died in the hospital (kind of explained in the hospital flashback part). some other time, i don’t know if it was before or after the wife died, the boy, who is the neighbor’s son, pushed his sister off the roof (the flashback with the creepy hands on the roller coaster). because of this, the neighbor locked his son in the basement, partly because he had killed his sister, and partly because the neighbor was crazy with grief. he then locked the ladder to the roof to prevent anyone from going up there.

Dan, the neighbors wife died in the car crash which is why it showed the women’s shoe, the boy was the neighbors son and he pushed the neighbors daughter(the girl) off the roof which explains the rollercoaster and the neighbor hides the boy slash his son in the basement because he is afraid that something is going to happen to him which explains why there is someone screaming while the neighbor pushes someone into the basement. That got the neighbor crazy which is why he is always angry. It is quite sad because the neighbor keeps a lot of the children’s stuff such as their drawings, their dolls, the doll house, etc. Hope this helped and could I get a shoutout for my channel

The neighbor crashed and one of the kids got very hurt. He was so upset he locked his other kid in the basement because he didn’t want that to happen to him. He thinks you are trying to hurt his kid. The neighbor got scared as a child and thinks the shadow man will hurt him. When you see him as a kid you are acting as the dad and every time you save him you get stronger (if you know what I mean). That’s my theory I hope you read this Dan. PEACE!!

I have a theory!!! That car crash that we saw, his child (daughter or son) may have gotten killed in it. His other child may of survived, which could be you. I think this because the shadow dude that was banging on the door could've been his son ,which could be you, and the neighbor didn't want you near him and his stuff. So, that is why the neighbor catches you and doesn't want you in the house because you are his son that could've been effected by that big creepy shadow dude and the neighbor thinks that you could be harmful to him.
I don't know if this is a really good theory, but this is what could have happened! 😀

But, to me, I think what happened was:
So basically the main character, you, are the neighbour's son. And you had a sister or a mother who died in a car crash. You and the neighbour could make it out of the accident alive. But, you lost your memory and forgot what happened and if he's your dad or not.
Your neighbor then immediately brought the girl (your sister/mum) to the hospital in all hopes of reviving them. However, they couldn't be revived, so the neighbour took out her heart or soul and preserved it in a mannequin. He then buried the girl's body, thus the scene of him burying someone in the full version.
But, with this "black magic", it instead turned the girl into a threat. Into something that could kill people. So, he had to trap her in her basement. And he's trying to protect his son (you) from the danger inside. But, you keep trying to unravel the secrets inside the basement.
And soon enough, the evil soul escaped from the mannequin and became the shadowy figure. Thanks to one character. You.
And the clip where your younger self plays with the toy car, is him regaining a bit of his memory. And that's when the evil soul haunts him. And it's your job to protect your younger self from it, because in the game, you've already figured out what's going on. And as you protect your younger self, you get bigger and can conquer that evil soul. So the soul gets scared and runs to somewhere else.
Your father. And the soul is just trying to make him into a shadowy figure too. Because it misses him.
So that's why I think why the soul is harassing the neighbour and you.

The full story is actually a little different that most people think.
The neighbor had a normal life, with a wife, son, and daughter. The wife got injured in a horrible car crash, and died in the hospital. Devastated, the neighbor, who's real name is Theodore Masters Peterson, returned home to his children. His son was devastated, but the daughter was too young to understand. The sadness and rage brought the son to push the daughter off the roof. She died. So, the neighbor, afraid of what might happen to his son, locked him in the basement to protect him. The black figure is a combination of the anger and sadness the entire family felt.
The neighbor just wanted to protect his son.

My theory is...The neighbor, which i have researched that his name is Matt, was once a happy man with a good family, but that family contained a dark secret...One day, Matt along with his family went on a drive to go buy things for the baby. (Remember, in the one game with the baby involved?!) When they were headed home, They had gotten in a major car crash. His wife had died (if you saw the high heel when he crashed) and the neighbor was driven insane. (Because usually the mother keeps the father in control) The children became hard to deal with without the help of the mom, so he decided it would just be easier to lock them up into the basement. Matt felt...guilty so he covered up the fact that he locked his children in the basement and pretended his children were missing. While Matt was insane, the boy found a way to escape, ( the boy might be you ) while he left the sister behind. The sister died because of the angry spirit of the dead mom was mad that the girl wasn't able to stop Matt from what he was doing. The 2 shadow monsters are now the mother and daughter. Now, the neighbor (Matt) is trying his hardest to ignore the two evil spirits. From protecting the secret, Matt uses hard puzzles and ways for other people to find out about this. You were the son, but you were recreated as the adult version and had forgotten about your sister.
That's my very long theory, and I hope it was interesting.

Here's my theory:
You were the player and you were abused by the neighbor; you were playing through your life as the neighbor's son, but was abandoned by him. The girl comes in to play as "your sister" and after the neighbor ruins her life by killing her in a car crash, he comes to realize what true love is, but by this time his memories were already haunting him. You continuously tried to return to the neighbor in a "dream dimension" and bring him back to normal so that he could fix his mistakes and let you back in, but you were unsuccessful. The neighbor tried to convalescence himself and you played through his memories and flashbacks at the end. But these memories come back to haunt him, and he is consumed by them at the end.

The neighbor had two children 1 boy one girl, the neighbor (i,m just gonna call the neighbor fred) crashed his car and both children died. Fred was traumatized and was haunted by his children. Fred later got a wife that had 2 more children. The reason Fred built the basement to keep his wife and children safe.He built the traps to keep people from attacking them. The neighbor ran after you because he thought that you were trying to hurt him and his family.(Well you did break into his house,push him over, take his stuff and attack him with arrows,baseballs,and guns that shoot tennis balls) You remember all of that because you were Fred’s second son!!!!

My Theory: There was a boy and a girl in the car crash, the girl died and the boy lived (or vice versa). So The Neighbour locked the boy (or the girl) in the basement so they couldn't be killed either, that's why the Neighbour has locks all over his house to protect them from being killed/taken away from him. The Neighbour tries to forget about the child he locked up. So he pretends they are missing. He cries because he is guilty because of the crash. The shadow-person is the neighbour's nightmare of someone ACTUALLY taking away his child. The screaming is when the shadow-person is encouraging them to get out and kill the neighbour for locking them up. When the girl stands in front of the roller coaster it's when the girl gets badly injured, when the neighbour is in the car he is rushing them home; because he is rushing, he crashes the car and kills one of his children. The Shadow-Man is the Devil, and the neighbour had a wife and she died. So the neighbour made a deal to have you forget about your relationship (father and son) and make you live a life not remembering your childhood when entering the neighbours house. I have no actual idea of what the real theory is, but I enjoyed your playthrough and I pretended it was a walkthrough.

My Theory is that the neighbor had a wife and two children(one boy, one girl). The brother/monster accidentally pushed/killed (from roller coaster ride scene)his sister and then the neighbor got into a accident and his wife died as you can see from the deathbed and the heart moniter going flat😥. He was so traumatized by the loss of his daughter and wife that he made sure that he wouldn't let his son die so he locked in the basement to be later on consumed by the darkness and made up missing poster signs so no one will know that his son kiled her sister,locked his son in his basement, so no one would get suspicious about his children after they heard about the death of his wife.....and he locked you in the basement so u wouldn't tell anyone what you knew and the neighbor's son(at the end of the game) got you kicked out of your apartment so he could do whatever/or tell you something as he finally had escaped from the neighbor/his dad's house.
I think the neighbor probably died or was looking for you or got lost.

Treesicle made a theory that makes perfect sense. The Neighbor crashed his car and killed his wife by accident: she was the one who died in the hospital. The Neighbor's son became upset that his father was too buisy grieving to pay attention to him, and in a fit of rage he pushed his sister off the roof while they were playing and accidentally killed her: the was the body the Neighbor buried. The Neighbor didn't want his son to get taken away from him, so he locked the boy in the basement and put up missing posters of his kids to throw the police off track. The player as a kid happened to witness the Neighbor trapping his son, and so the Neighbor locked him away to keep the boy from telling people. The player lived the basement for at least five years, and during that time his fear of the unseen person in the dark outside his room grew until he imagine it as a monster: the reason the shadow fluctuates body shape and is black is due to the fact that the player never actually sees him. Eventually the son breaks free and unlocks the player's prison, and we finally escape from the Neighbor. The Neighbor gives chase, but his son breaks out of the the house through a window and he decides to go after his boy instead of the player. The player tells his parents what happened, and his parents tell the police; hence, the Neighbor and his son are taken away, the house is demolished, and our parents move to the city. In act three the player is evicted (the developers said so themselves) from his apartment and, being broke, has no choice but to move back to his childhood home; however, the familiar sights evoke such fear from the player that he curls up on the couch and drifts into a nightmare. In his nightmare, the player overcomes his fear of the Neighbor, and eventually his fear of the shadow monster (a.k.a, the Neighbor's son). Having overcome his trauma, the player wakes up and begins his life anew. As I said before, this theory is not my own. The channel Treesicle figured all this out, so please give them proper credit

My theory is that the neighbour had a family of a wife and daughter. He had a crash killing his wife and daughter he hid the daughter in the basement but buried his wife but his wife is the black figure haunting him because in fact he was drunk on that night so he feels full of regret then after to fill his heart he persuades a young boy to come into his house and then he kidnaps the child and the child eventually died then after a few years he burns his house killing himself and his wife’s spirit but he comes back as a scary black monster thing stopping anyone from finding the children’s bones and that’s when the man comes and sees the neighbour and the neighbour plants a dream into the mans head showing everything that happens clearing his spirit letting him go free to his wife.

I’m here in 2021 and I read the books the story is the neighbor was in a car crash with his wife and she died after that his son and daughter were playing on the roof and the son pushed her off by accident. So the neighbor locked the son in the basement because he didn’t want to lose anyone else.
I think the shadow thingy is a demon who is controlling the neighbour so that’s why the neighbour locked It in the basement so he couldn’t do anything else to other people. I think the neighbour is actually a nice guy and we were the bad guys because we BROKE into his house and all he did was try and keep us out. I hope this theory made sense.

this is what hello neighbor hide and seek implies but i might be wrong . The neighbor had 2 kids a son and a daughter but one day his wife died and the the son got really upset, in a fit of anger he killed his own sister by pushing her off the top of the neighbors house. the neighbor found out and locked the son in the basement this is just what i think but you can feel free to make your own theories

My theory, The Neighbor was driving with his daughter and crashed the car which killed his daughter, which is why he’s crying. He didn’t want any other bad things to happen to his son, so he locked him in a room so he couldn’t get hurt. Thus the reason why there are missing signs everywhere, the kid was locked up and he didn’t tell anyone that his daughter died. My theory is that the neighbor had a girl and a boy. One day he was driving in his car with his girl, and he crashed, and she died. But the weird black shadow creatures were probably the neighbors regrets coming to haunt him, so he went crazy!

For me it was his son and his daughter, the demon is the neighbor after his daughter dies because he accidentally killed her and buried her body which turned him insane. He becomes this demon because he loses his mind and he doesn't want anything bad to happen to the son, so he sets up all these traps and things to keep him from leaving and being out of his site. Eventually the son is able to escape which is why he is missing and the daughter was missing because he buried her and told no one about it. You are also the son who escaped, yet moved back to face his demons.

Mine is that once he was driving with his daughter and he crashed his car so the girl got badly hurt and went to the hospital and when he was waiting for answers she died.. so then after she died he wanted to keep his son safe as long as possible and locked him up bc his wife died too. (This is not guessing this REALLY DID HAPPEN i played it before) so all he had left was his son, BUT since he locked up his son and his wife and daughter died bc it was his falt, that shadow thing is his memories and his past.. thats what happend. My theory is he crashed the car with his daughter in it, kidnapped a boy to replace his dead daughter, the boy eventually got away so the neighbor put up the missing posters but included the girl because he had gone crazy after his daughters death. The boy grows up and moves into the house across the street from the neighbors house knowing there was a fire and he was being evicted. When dreaming he remembers the neighbor as a big scary monster symbolizing that the neighbor was cruel to him, in the dream the boy is seen to be a shadow monster because the memory of the boy to the neighbor is a bad so it turns out dark. While unpacking the boy or young man rather, finds a old memento from the house when he drops his suitcase.

Basically, His wife, son and daughter all died in a car crash so the neighbour kidnapped children in hope to try and make him less depressed and sad.
When Dan played the hello neighbour as a kid, there was a part where he was trapped in the neighbour's house as there was a tall wooden fence keeping him from escaping. In actual fact, this part showed that character Dan plays as was kidnapped by the neighbour and finally escaped.
At the very beginning of the game, Dan moves to a house and opposite him is where used to be the neighbour's house and now is just some wood. My theory is that after Dan's younger character escaped the neighbour, the neighbour burned down the house with all the children he kept in the basement, inside it along with Dan's character's sister which also explains the missing poster of the boy and girl.
The boy and girl were Dan's character and his sister when they were kidnapped.
The monster with the light eyes is the neighbour's fear AND Dan's character's fear. It is Dan's character's fear because in the part where Dan has to protect his younger self from the monster, Dan's character gets bigger meaning he is slowly overcoming his fear of the neighbour. It is the neighbour's fear because in the last part of the game, there is the house in an endless blank space where the neighbour has locked the door and on the other side is his fear which he tries to lock away.
Anyway, this is just my theory I don't know the actual story!

my theory is that only the daughter of the neighbor died. not the son. the son is the main boy in the game. the boy is trying to get back into his own house, but his dad (aka the neighbor) doesnt want him to know that his sister died. that explains why in the video "neighbors secret graveyard" only the daughters grave is seen. just so people would not think he is not letting his son into the house, the neighbor PRETENDED that his son was dead too. he pretended that his son was just a random boy. this part is not very likely, but i think the big demon at the end was the neighbors daughter, trying to kill her own brother to join her in heaven.
