Siim Koger yeah the thick sound of the song comes from heavily layering the sounds. Queen achieved that dynamic sound that way. But I agree that without any distortion, the orchestra didn't quite work. Except that opera part of course! That was gorgeous

Robinson Crusoe but did they actually? It didn't seem like they used overdubbing at all in bohemian rhapsody. Maybe a little overlap but not straight up adding other voices. All of Ptx vol 4 was pretty clean from using overdubbing.

Thank you for uploading. i did notice that who ever is providing their in-ears needs to correct or refit. They were all needing to adjust our reposition to hear better.
Though I liked it with the orchestra, I kind of wanted to see how they themselves would perform it live, without the help of the instrumentals. I wish I were able to hear them a little more over the instruments also. I hope they perform this at the Allentown show!

So the orchestra got a little overzealous here.... first rule of playing music is know your role. Know where the melodic/moving parts are and back off or come forward accordingly... The singers should have been the focus and the orchestra overpowered them. Would have sounded amazing if the orchestra, particularly first violins and trumpets, showed a little more restraint here.
It's a fine line. Ultimately, if an orchestra wants to play fortissimo, they're going to do it even if the conductor is showing piano..... Yes he has responsibility here, but it should have been worked out ahead of time. That's what the dress rehearsal is for. I play in a symphony currently and each time we have a soloist or guest, the conductor in rehearsal will start the piece and then move to the audience to check the balance and sound quality which I'm sure they did. If my rinky-dink orchestra knows that, I can't see a professional one not doing it. Even if he was conducting fortissimo, it's the players job to back off of the soloist since it would be a different level fortissimo than the soloists. Sometimes adrenaline gets the best of you and you forget in the heat of the moment. That's what I picture happening here. It's such an iconic song, I feel like I'd want to wail away at it when I got the melody lol

I was there...it was classy but they were not themselves; they hardly moved around. They are better acappella but it was a nice show and the fireworks were spectacular.
I love the combination of the acapella and the orchestra, but I think the orchestra's sound was a little bit louder than the Pentatonix. as you can see, Avi was struggling getting the bass notes because the orchestra was competing at him
This sounds amazing, although was spoiled by the sound levels not being right. I'd adore this professionally recorded where all the instruments and ptx can be heard equally well, especially Avi!
when you hear it live, the orchestra actually does make a lot of contributions to the song. it overpowered them at the AMAs and hardly did anything at the Bee Gees tribute, but at the Hollywood Bowl it actually sounded pretty good
Am I the only one who thinks Avi is just taking a long hiatus?? They'll never find someone like him to replace... those 5 people were MEANT to be together. And they obviously can't do it with just 4 people. This is the perfect opportunity (which they have been taking advantage of) for everybody else to explore their solo/duo projects. Ride that wave for a while and when Avi is ready to come back, hop back in but at much slower pace. After all, that was Avi's issue - the group got so big so fast. Obviously this is just my theory bc it's what I wanna believe... I hope I'm not too far off. *sobs*

I love the orchestra backing too!! It was so impressive in person. I obviously love the a cappella as well, I'm a professional singer and I can definitely be a purist about it. But this orchestra did amazing and I thought it complemented them well.
I also thought that it added to the "grandeur" at times - from 3:00 to maybe 4:00, in particular - but at other times came a little too close to drowning out their own unique grandeur.

To be fair, Pentatonix were kind of like guests at this concert - it wasn't the same as their regular tour concerts.

The vocal arrangement doesn't really lend itself to the adding of an orchestra. Parts of it worked better than others.
The orchestra did sound very good, but I admit that they were pretty loud. Maybe mf or mp would've been better. I play the violin hehe
