      @Jessica Rain City Actually, this is part of it. The dry parts of the chemise would help to kee you warm a tiny amount, due to the fabric it's made from. The wet parts would only become cold after getting out of the hip bath. The other part of it is for modesty.
      What I wouldn't care for is not washing the nether regions or the armpits.

    Watching how complicate things were in the old time teaches you gratitude. At least for these kind of things. Me personally I congratulate myself every night for sleeping in a comfy, warm, clean bed, since I passed a night in a Tibetan nomad's tent. You must get used to from child on to endure these life styles. We are way to spoilt. But watching it is a kind of katharsis. Thanks for putting so much work into it!!

      Yes, that was the whole point of chemises. They protected the skin from chafing, but more importantly the actual garments from sweat and body oils. Only these durable, usually white linen undergarments were frequently washed.
      That's why costume lovers always get into fits of rage, when women in historical movies wear their corsets without undergarments. It's completely historically inaccurate.

      Well, there was literally something called 'the little iceage' happening in Northern Europe during the 16th-19th century. In some years (1814 for example), it was cold enough, for the River Thames to freeze over deep enough, for people to walk on it - just to give you an idea. Imagine that without central heating.
      Keeping your house warm and heating water for baths would have been both difficult and labor/cost intensive.
      No wonder, they made do with washcloths and wore many layers of clothing, even fashion aside.
      And when you don't do any physical work/exercise, like upper class ladies at the time, you're even more prone to feeling cold.
      But yeah...it probably occasionally sucked in summer, to then be stuck with wearing all those clothes on top of each other.

      Oh, ha. My bad, you're correct of course. I was binge watching an English history channel yesterday and it was rather late, when I watched this video and wrote my comment.
      And I'm not nearly as familiar with American history (or climate) of the time. I watch the Townsend channel occasionally, but they don't really cover upper class clothing and such.

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Mandii K
      Well, yes and no (as I understand it, mind you, I'm not an expert)
      The style of the clothes would stay the same and you'd still have to wear the required undergarments like chemise and stays or corset, petticoats or other 'skirt support'...whatever the current fashionable silhouette and decency/hygiene required.
      But in winter, there would have been heavier wool skirts and thicker stockings, as well as additional shawls and such to keep the upper body warm.
      But there wasn't the same clear distinction between summer and winter garments as today, as far as cut or length of the garments are concerned.
      Prior Attire is an excellent source for that kind of information. They have a whole catalog of videos showing people of all classes and through the different decades (even centuries) getting dressed in period clothing.

    I'm a huge fan of lots of water and big tub, but that little hip bath is probably enough. Hot water was not easy to come by back then. If I were going to time travel or just deal with a water situation I'd have a big pan to stand in and a bowl of hot water and scrub starting at the top and work down and not in a slip either.

    This might be a little personal but did women wash their armpits and private areas when taking a bath or did they only wash the parts of their body that weren't covered by the chemise like in the video? Also what if a woman wanted to bathe, but she was on her menstrual cycle? Were there other methods of bathing or would she just have to wait till her cycle was over to finally bathe?

      @@hueso5071Jeez, we expect everything to be visually spelled out for us these days. I don't think they can show that part on this channel.. There was a vessel featured on Antiques Roadshow, from the 1700s, that turned out to be a bidet. They were very common in the 1700s and 1800s. In fact, there was a genre of naughty pictures of the day that featured a lady using the bidet. Hilarious. I'd never heard of that activity being captured in art. This "bidet" habit is still around in Europe and i saw these vessels in small hotels in the late 20th c.

    Since I've been watching your videos and watching Justine cook three meals a day and doing the clothing video and such when I'm at home making meals I think could I have lived back then it seemed pretty hard. And then I answer myself now it was too hard I could not have done it. The food looks really good though and I know it tastes good. The clothing thing I don't know just too many clothes to put on and take off. But as I've mentioned I like this channel because it's so interesting to see how people did live back then and for the historical value. ❤️❤️❤️

    It seems that the paradigm at the time was to use clothing to keep oneself clean. And the parts exposed to the air would only be the parts that needed to be washed on a regular basis. There is an idea that if one were to constantly use clean garments closest to the body, they will remain clean on the parts that are covered. Hence the emphasis to literally try and cover oneself with as many layers of clothing as much as possible.

    I wouldn't sit in the tub at all, but stood up in the tub and had a lot of hot water pitchers on the floor beside the tub. Pour water on my face, neck, and arms and soap up with hands or a washcloth, wet shoulders and chest, and soap up and continue until down to the feet. Then keep rinsing down until soap is gone. Towel dry while still standing in the tub and lift and dry each foot while getting out. That little 'bottom' soak would not be enough. All this would be done without the shift and anyone's help. I would have been very rebellious and changed a lot of routines to have them make sense for me and save time. Drinks then get enjoyed while being bundled up in front of the fire.
