I’ve always said that Buddy plays drums the way the rest of us drummers do in dreams, where the sounds just come flying out of us, as effortless as a rush of wind, and so completely inside the music, making it laugh and dance and explode, that it’s as though Nature had bypassed the human body entirely. There is absolutely no one else like this, even among the best alive now.

Bob Florence's Limited Edition was up there with Rich's bands. Listen to Buddy's band's recording of "Willowcrest," written by Bob Florence, on Big Swing Face, and then listen to Bob Florence's band's recording of it. Buddy was the greatest big band drummer who ever lived, but it takes more than a drummer to make a big band. Florence's horn players were generally better. They were mostly top-drawer LA studio players. A few Rich alumni played in Florence's bands later in their careers.
THE MASTER of his craft and his demand for perfection from himself and his musicians resulted in the tightest bands of all time, what a task master. Given that, my hat’s off to Steve Marcus for 12 years of consummate creativity and carrying the torch after Buddy’s departure, equally amazing.

Also caught Buddy in a live interview and the topic of his being unmerciful towards his band came up and his reply was something to the effect that he wasn't any different than any other boss that required the absolute best from his employees.
