Aside from Sayo-nara and Just Monika, most of the horror from the music comes from the fact that Act II's music is identical to Act I's except subtle differences. Random notes get shifted up or down a semitone, the music cuts out entirely at certain narrative beats before coming back in like nothing happened, parts of it get sped up or slowed down, and throughout the entire soundtrack certain instruments represent specific characters, so the music plays around with that, too.
yeah, i was going to make a comment about how just listening to the soundtrack out of context without having played the game is not going to do the music justice. the exact moments that the game changes the music during gameplay are what makes it so effective as horror.
The best reaction I've heard from someone playing this game was Game Grumps - because one of them (Arin) knew what was coming and played it entirely cool, while the other (Dan) had zero idea and was absolutely ruined for the rest of the recording session.
Not only that but what made it even better was that there was no backseating chat AND they've already played multiple legit dating-sims on the channel so it wasn't something they've never done before
They also took a long break from playing the game because Dan couldn't handle the fact that the game was not what he thought it was and was genuinely distraught because of it
I really love "Your Reality". It's one thing that it's essentially the main theme but with lyrics, which is pretty funny, but also how those lyrics tie perfectly together with Monika's character. Obviously, having not played the game, she wasn't gonna have much of a reaction to it, but I always have this solemn feeling whenever I hear it.

Dude, the jump from the Main Theme to Sayo-nara is crazy. I just got chills just remembering the scene... THAT SCENE! You know what I'm talking about....
I love how Dan Salvato meant to make was basically a bit of a mickey take of a visual novel dating sim that turned into a psychological horror, but accidentally made a fantastic example of a visual novel, on top of being a brilliant psychological horror.
YES, YOU FINALLY REACTED TO PEAK HORROR! Also, Sayori disappearing during Sayo-nara was clever. Iykyk! Also, to answer your question, well it’s kinda hard to do that without spoiling it. But just so you know, Sayo-nara and Just Monika aren’t the only moments of horror. You really should play the game if you want to experience everything (there’s both a free version on Steam and a paid version with some extra content)
Doki Doki Literature Club is one of those horror games where you really gotta experience it at least once! But like the note said, it’s not for the faint of heart :)
The way they use their music is incredible. It starts as this cute style that comforts you. But then when sayonara plays it absolutely shatters that comfort.
Should I assume that the emptiness in Just Monika’s theme is describing itself like it’s the main theme, but 4 girls’ themes combined together? So *just Monika’s* theme is actually sounds like this kind of emptiness when other 3 girls’ themes are removed?? ·_·
This is hands down my favourite game, in terms of "horror." It's... somehow painfully beautiful, EXTREMELY real (yeah, ...life gets dark. Does it end in the dark?) Extremely meta existentialism with some modern twists to classic existential nightmares. And THE PRESENTATION. Damn good game. This is a game right?
I love this game. The main character has been my desktop background since this game came out, and the music is definitely a part of that. Great game though, if you play it, you should try and romance best girl - Monika. :) Also, interesting fact, all of the characters are represented by instruments, and iirc the music changes based on who you’re talking to at times to make their instrument more prominent.
I enjoyed watching Game Grumps play this game. It was so great watching the mood go from "Ha ha, let's voice the game goofy." to "whoa whoa! What the heck?! Stop!" Now, too many are in on the joke, so to speak. You just don't see the same affect on people. Mostly.
I LOVE how DDLC this experience is. You have been spoiled from a wierd angle, but you could absoolutley play this and better understand what the music is doing. Its a relativley short game, and its free.
If just listening to the music is enough to make you look behind you, then the game itself might be a little much. Unfortunately, the music itself is about as much as you can expose yourself to without catching major spoilers, so it’s kinda hard to make references to any story beats that the songs mention. DDLC is honestly just a phenomenal game, and was one of the big breakouts of the meta storytelling/forth wall breaking games. Also, considering that a visual novel could gain this much of a cult following with how few people actually enjoyed that style back in 2019 tells you just how well this was pulled off. In terms of how the game is a psychological horror with so much upbeat music, it’s pulled off in a pretty ingenious way. There are obviously the big twists, but there are other details. Sometimes the music will temporarily glitch or warp for smaller scenes where the character sprites do the same, but the things I really personally like are the small details that you might not notice. Sometimes a poster in the back of the classroom might reference a certain less-than-happy scene. Sometimes a character sprite will slowly warp, only being noticeable if the player sits on one screen for a long time. The story even will throw out hints when characters reference things speak in certain ways or reference things that they shouldn’t have any knowledge about. And the game uses next to no jumpscares, with is a breath of fresh air compared to so many other mediocre indie horror games. TL;DR: If you like psychology horror, play this game. There’s a reason it popped off online back in the day. (It’s also great for streamer/video reactions ;)
Don't worry miss. If you play enough horror games it will make you jaded and no longer scared. You may even find their creepy atmospheres comforting like me
This game is...something yeah, but it's a really good game. Also, a deluxe version of the game called Doki Doki Litterature Club Plus! was released almost 3 years ago, and has some new music tracks, if you'd like to give it a listen too
In context, "your reality" is the scaryest song in the list. I recommend playing the game... and making sure you have the day after it off so you can recover from the sleepless night this game will bring you
This game hides its true colors beautifully. The music throws you off at times and you never expect things. For example: The last two songs you listened to (Just Monika and Your Reality) are themes for the same character.
The editor of the videos you watched on songs you listened to knew what they were doing when they excluded Sayori from the picture when Sayo-nara played (and by putting Just Monika when Just Monika played).
16:32 Girl, you are spot on with that. "Alone in a huge room." That's basically where you are where you hear this music. I've never tried analyzing that music in that way before.
Oh my God I’m actually freaking out I never expected this! I’ve been wanting someone, anyone, to react to Music from this game for the longest time but no one has! I recently just got DDLC+ for my Switch and it’s just fantastic, I’ve loved the game from the very week it came out all the way till now.
You’re absolutely correct in that there are some spoilery in game context events that revolve around the music changing suddenly or becoming distorted ever so slightly to throw the player off kilter. Otherwise they are wholesome for the most part
Unironically I would love to see her do a video of SiIvagunner rips (would need to be a curated list though to avoid copyright stuff) One suggestion (spoilers below): They did a rip for Black 2 of N’s room… with one of the songs in this very video
Despite how good the music is it still does not do justice to how twisted and meta the game gets. It's truly worth playing or if you can't handle playing I recommend watching the GameGrumps playthrough. They compiled it into an nearly 7 hour video, but it's so worth it.
What's even more eering for you, I guess, is how much our brain is good at making up things. So for us, who know the game, some tune are chilling. But YOU who has no knowledge aside from "the game gets creepy"... must be even WORSE! It may be everything D:
There are a couple of tracks on the OST that don't appear in-game, but are really great tracks that would be great to see Emily react to, called Poems are Forever and Doki Doki. Also a fan-made song and MMD music video called Doki Doki Forever.
the end credits song is both very sad and can also be scary to thing about if you interpret the lyrics another way: "In my hand is a pen that will write a poem of me and you" -> "In my hand is a knife that will "write a poem" of me and you" "The ink flows down into a dark puddle" -> "The blood flows down into a dark puddle" "Just move your hand, write the way into his heart" -> "Just move your hand(holding the knife), way into his heart"
The irony of her loving the piano the whole time 😂 I would love to see Emily record a playthrough of her own, rather than watching someone else play through it.
I hope you do touhou music in the future. The entirety of the series help caused the creation of undertale and all of its music. As a plus the creator of the series is very lax with the copyright for his characters and music which allows for anyone to create derivative works of touhou from song remixes to selling your own games. For some song suggestions they are Gensokyo the Gods Loved, Broken Moon, Maiden's Capprico, Love Colored Master Spark, Flowering Night, Hartman's Youkai Girl, Idolatrize World Voyage 1969 Kobito of the Shining Needle Border of Life Wind God Girl The Sea Where One's Home Planet Reflects and U.N. Not sure if I'm remembering wrong or if I read too much into something, but wasn't there something planned that isn't a sequel but references stuff that happened in it?
I hope you'll one day consider listening to the new songs in Doki Doki Literature Club Plus. They all have a much more wholesome vibe to them, and have given me goosebumps in a much more positive way than the original game.
this is a pretty short LP if you want to do it, its about 3-4h depending on how unwilling you are to continue. Could do it in a single night and the base version is free

Believe it or not, the OST was composed by Michael Giacchino before he became a big name. Lords of Magic. A mostly forgotten-about game these days that, none the less, had an _iconic_ soundtrack.
Sooo, the great and downside to this game is it expects you to both know tropes of dating Sim visual novels and also not know the extent of what Python can do, Python being the software most anime-style visual novels are made with. Musically it's very simple, but I love it. One thing I will say though is the game was the passion project of one person, Dan Salvato, so the simplicity in most sections is to emphasize the details in others.

I loved your reaction! If I could recommend a game for you to listen to the OST I’d definitely say Your Turn To Die, it’s full of bangers and I think you’d like it!
I have an uncommon suggestion for the fnaf games original ost, I believe that the soundtrack is underrated and would love to see a musicians opinion on it.
Can you react to the Murder Drones OST? I would recommend reacting to Murder Drones, Get Prommed :3, Solver Uzi, The Human Gala, Sentinal 000D, and Heh, Nothing Personal Kid
Please, listen the soundtrack of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Not only main theme, but and other soundtrack like Harvest Dawn, Wing of Kynareth, or From Fast to Present, The Streets of Whiterun, Far Horizon

I have no idea what this game is but I love the reaction! You should PLEASE do a final fantasy 7 music reaction. With the new game out it would be perfect. Some of the best music in video game history.
It's not even Sayo-nara in the timestamps, it's just "I'm scared"
*As you should*
Please please PLEASE tell me you record gameplays and upload them somewhere, I'm still waiting for the Undertale playthrough! And now I wanna see the Doki Doki playthrough!!
@ilexEmily please react to the epic battle fantasy 5 ost
Specifically:
Sunset harbor
Nymphis fae
Blade and switch
M3chanical c0n-d4amnation
Return of the snow queen
Lacrimis ex anima
As the shadow
Petals of the blade
Blaze of iris
And a breeze from home vocal version
In that order please
Honestly this game can be finished within 3 hours depending on your reading speed, and is best experienced with zero spoilers. And most of all it's FREE to play.
I loved your reaction! If I could recommend a game for you to listen to the OST I’d definitely say Your Turn To Die, it’s full of bangers and I think you’d like it!
pleaseee play this gameee, is horrorific and mindblowing at the same time, you wont regret
Id love to see you react to Deep Rock Galactic's OST! Especially Robot Getaway, RUN!, Fathomless Tomb and Into the Abyss!
The piano is beautiful god she’s so good at playing piano I love her sm 🥰
So who's gonna tell her the context for sayo-nara?
I gently open the door
Why wasn't "Ohayou Sayori!" on the list?!?! It's one of my favourite tracks from the game =(
I have an uncommon suggestion for the fnaf games original ost, I believe that the soundtrack is underrated and would love to see a musicians opinion on it.
Could you react to the Cassette Beasts soundtrack? I think you'd love it!
Lmao I get the sense you wouldn't enjoy Witch House
If you ever play the game I'd love to see it on the channel!
You should react to the dlc of Splatoon 3! Its called Side Order and its got some pretty wild and enjoyable songs
Shame you missed Daijoubu since that one pops off
just a warning, if you plan to play this game at all, just know that it deals with sensitive and scary topics.
OH PLZ MAKE A PART 2!!! 🙏
There's a lot more good songs at the latest DLC called "DDLC plus"
my favorite songs in there are candy hearts and candy heartz 😉
We all know the memes that occurred when Speed played this game
Don't sweat it... It terrified us all.
