The Rise and Fall of Palermo: How Did It Happen?

  • Ten years ago, US Palermo finished 5th in Serie A, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification, playing a vibrant brand of attacking football with talent like Javier Pastore, Edinson Cavani, and Fabrizio Miccoli.
In the space of a decade, the Rosanero have gone from rivalling the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus, to playing amateur football in Italy's fourth tier, Serie D.
It's a remarkable decline, and in this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the causes and factors that contributed to both Palermo's rise and decline between 2002 and 2019.
*My apologies for referring to Delio Rossi as Delio Rosso throughout.

As a Sicilian-American, I’ve been a supporter of Palermo for a long time. I streamed all of their matches when they were still in Serie A. Really glad to see a vid on the Rosanero’s downfall, I followed it closely, but found that it wasn’t covered very much outside of Italy. Great vid as always. Forza Palermo.

As a huge Serie A fan since 2009 I loved this video. Zamparini truly made every calcio fan hate Palermo, even though we always felt bad for the fans. As I got into Italian football the atmosphere at night games in the Renzo Barbera was insane. A real shame how one man can ruin a club.

I started watching palermo around 2011, I was amazed by their fun way to play. I was one of the very few norwegian fans, I had to read every news article in Italian (with no pre-knowledge of the language, except google translate). And I can tell you this, hell it was a bumpy ride. Watching Zamparini destroy everything month after month, I think the turning point for me was when he sacked Pioli, then I understood there was no way back.
I watched them play Serie B/A on severly crappy illegal streams for years, when they finally hit Serie D, I was finally happy again. Lets hope they can rise from the ashes.
Also, I lolled when you mentioned Ezequiel Munoz as a dependable centerback. Hell he turned out a decent player, but he made more penalties than anyone in the start. Guy was so buff he pushed down anyone, all the time. I do love him tho, but you never knew if he was gonna win you the match or make you lose it (most likely the latter).

So, a team that languished in the lower leagues for many years before it's granted fortune by an ambitious owner, raising the club to an unpredecented height in its history... only for that same owner to sunk them to the ground. Seems fair to say that this is Italy's version of Watford, except Zamperini is even MORE trigger happy than Watford's owners (and just flat out insane), and Palermo was arguably much more succesful. Good video as always.

Zamparini made Roman Abramovich look far less trigger happy. At least Roman only sacks his managers if the team underperforms.

Nice one. A good one would be 7 countries most likely to win FIFA world cup in future that haven't won already. Reasons such as rich history, growing popularity, large population, etc
(eg, USA, Netherlands, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria)

I'm a sucker for Palermo shirts. When a good one comes up on ebay, I'm always there. I currently own twelve and usually wear them in the gym. The one I'm desperate for is the third shirt from a few seasons back, black with pink pin stripes.

A video on the legendary Independiente forward line of Arsenio Erico, Antonio Sastre and Vicente de la Mata on how good they were and what they achieved together at Independiente during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Or a video on the halcyon days of Argentine football at both club and international level during the 1930s and 1940s with the many great players, teams and successes achieved during the period.

Do Parma. I remember back in 93 the trident attack which included Tomas Brolin and Faustino Asprilla
