Stories from the Street: Jose Yanez, a former BMX stunt performer among those unsheltered

  • Jose Yanez’s story is one that intrigued me, focusing on the escalating homeless rate in Maricopa County and nationally. His unique journey from upbringing to action sports stardom is both captivating and eye-opening. At the time I documented this, he was searching for shelter, and his current whereabouts remain unknown. While talking to unsheltered individuals, a prevalent message emerged - that homelessness can happen to anyone.

In the early 2000s, Jose and I were sorta/kinda rivals over a very pretty girl in Gilbert, AZ. Despite all that, a year or two later, when I was a homeless, unemployed drug addict, he let me stay at his apartment for a couple months, and even helped me find work. I'll never forget that and I'll always keep him in my prayers.

So sad to see. I still have my Freestylin' magazines with Jose featured in them. He also 360'd the fence, coming out of the bowl at Upland! Also, he rode for Hutch which is what I rode. Hutch was my favorite team. I pray things work out for him.

The 360 over a fence out of a bowl was Hugo Gonzalez at least I know he did that while sponsored by GT while competing in the AFA Kingsgate parks.

I saw him at the circus here in Detroit at the now-defunct Joe Louis Arena. He had to ride down a sketchy ramp that was up in the rafters, and he pulled a backflip over this huge ramp.
I hope the best for this guy. He was, and still is, an inspiration.

I remember this from the early 80’s, it blew my mind that someone was doing a backflip on a bike. I thought he got sponsored from Hutch when he was in the circus? Shame he struggled so hard after. God bless him.

One day you wake up at 18 years old ,.... the next day you're 60 .
    It happens fast kids .
The hardest part about getting old and your mind wants to do things and your body refuses to let you .

What the FUCK! 1. Why aren't the rest of the legends that have done well for themselves trying to help this legend out? No one's offering him a place to stay??? 2. Where do we send money to? How do we help him out?? We must do SOMETHING. Theres no way this guy should be without a place to live!

Word out in the BMX community & from BMX legend Eddie Fiola , some time in the near future Jose will be inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame with his own plaque on the wall . I think it will be at the next BMX Hall of fame ceremony & he deserves it , he brong the backflip into BMX & Matt the condor Hoffman was the very first person to add the 180 turn on a half pipe to turn it into a flair , once I seen the backflip in Rad in 1986 it blew my mind & once I seen Matt Hoffman nail the flair in 1990 in the UK at the King of Vert contest , then & only then I knew anything was possible .
