This report on Songdo offers valuable insights. As someone who has frequented Songdo since 2008, with more regular visits from 2017 onwards, I share some of the author's observations. While I appreciate aspects of Songdo, the over-reliance on car-centric infrastructure hinders walkability and creates a disconnect between its green aspirations and reality. The vast, spaced-out layout forces reliance on vehicles, detracting from the pedestrian experience.
I've noticed the struggles of Canal Walk, with shop closures, though the ArtWin Prugio area seems more vibrant. The "international city" label feels superficial. Despite the aim, there's a lack of spaces that truly cater to or foster a sense of belonging for foreigners. The city seems geared towards a specific demographic: affluent Korean families, where mothers and children dominate the daytime landscape, while a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene is conspicuously absent, pushing younger residents to seek those elsewhere, like Bucheon.
The upcoming GTX line holds potential for positive change, hopefully attracting a more diverse population and stimulating the growth of a richer, more inclusive city culture. Relaxing restrictions on nightlife venues could also inject much-needed energy into the city after dark.
