Fujifilm XH2 or XH2S for video. Is the XH2S really better?

  • Today I'm comparing the Fujifilm XH2 with the XH2S and I'm giving you my opinion as a videographer which camera is the better option for video shooters. I must say the 8K and the 4K HQ options on the XH2 are fantastic but overall I HAVE to give the win to the XH2S due to it's stacked APSC sensor technology and FAR superior sensor readout speeds allowing the camera to take 14bit sensor readouts at 4K 30p and 24p. This allows the XH2S to operate at a higher dynamic range which is noticeable especially when color grading. This ALONE for me was easily worth the additional $500. Beyond this one thing I did not mention is even Fujifilm themselves said the XH2S has a better video AF algorithm but to me personally I would say it is marginally better compared to the XH2. These are both incredible cameras but if I had to pick one for video work the XH2S is going in the bag with me!
    Thank you so much for watching. Please consider subscribing, commenting, and liking this video if you found it useful so I can continue to grow this channel and make better videos for you.

The H2s was shooting 10 bit 4:2:2 in Slog 2 at 4K 120 and normal frames and I honestly thought it would give a warning. Carried on. We did also cover the camera during off times and try to keep it cool. Its just such a solid shooting box, and once its graded in the right hands, it's honestly such a pretty picture that you would only expect out of a high end camera. Hey! I do all my editing in davinci resolve. I just use a very light denoise in low light situations where I have to crank up the ISO. Really the way this camera operates the absolute BEST is when you have in body denoise completely off and you always do your denoise in post. This is what RAW cameras like ARRI and RED do since raw footage doesn’t have any noise reduction applied to it.

      Hey!
      I personally shoot everything on a 512gb angelbird type b card. It was super cheap and it can write the highest prores HQ the camera has to offer. I also feel like the type b cards are just way more robust than the sd cards. With that said most of the content I shoot is very simple 200mbps h265 4:2:2. I have shot in standard prores 4K but the file size wasn’t appealing to me for most of my work. Depending on how powerful your computer is you can edit h265 very easily in davinci. I have a m1 pro Mac laptop and it’s no problem in 1080p playback. I will say the prores will absolutely play back on any machine with no problem and it’s more durable when it comes to color grading and layering effects in your node tree. Hope that helps!

  • @LucasRocksFilms
    @LucasRocksFilms ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Isn't the whole thing with 4k on the xh2s that all the 4k is oversampled from the 6.2k sensor (except the 4k120) so there is no reason to delineate an "HQ mode", where as on the xh2 because the slower sensor they have to give you a line skipped mode (regular 4k) and an oversampled mode (HQ)? I have only used the xh2s. Curious if the larger oversampling on the xh2 is better

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is an awesome point! You’re right the xh2s 4K is downsampled from 6.2k. I think one way to see what’s going on here between the two is to see how much storage each of them require for let’s say h265 4:2:2 4K 30fps. If the xh2s requires more storage than indeed the 4K on the xh2 is line skipped. When I looked at other reviews that looks to be the case and the standard 4k on the xh2 is much softer than the 4k HQ when you pixel peep. All I can say is that the 4k hq is space hungry and it grades extremely well. When you say is it better I do not think it is over the xh2s because that extra stop of dynamic range is noticeable when you’re shooting in a high lit background like a subject at the beach.

    For the X-H2 having a 40MP sensor, does it result in lower quality 4K video if I use an older Fujifilm 16mm f1.4 lens that they say cannot resolve the 40MP sensor? With this lens, would I be better off using a X-T4 that only has a 26MP sensor?

    • @adnan_velic

      Great question! I believe for video purposes the 16mm f1.4 will be enough to render the 4K image even though it’s downsampled from 8k. For photography however I’m not sure if that 16mm will render all of the 40mp. My guess is that it won’t be enough but it will be very close.

      4K 30fps with 1/60 shutter speed. The panning motion in the xh2 video looked jittery I do agree with you and that’s because of davinci resolve stabilization for what ever reason didn’t like the footage. • @adnan_velic

      Hey! Well the xh2s has the most dynamic range out of the x mount series. Usually the more dynamic range in video the more expensive the camera gets. Cinematic look is very subjective and it takes more than just the camera body the lens is way more important than the body. Interesting video. Couple of notes.
    The xh2s does have 4k pro res HQ up to 60fp. Not sure why you were saying it doesn't.
    The xh2s has a more “organic” look than the 8k xh2 which is way more digital.
    14 stops isn't the case in either cameras. More like 12.5 to 13 stops in the xh2s and The xh2 is a little less.
    Also, videos like this you NEED a lot of broll to support your case. It does t help just having a talking head.
    And on a 512gb cf express type b card 4k ProResHQ in 24fp will get you 1 hour and 20 mins of record time.

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey! Thanks for commenting I watched some of your videos and they are great!
      I looked at this video one more time and I see what you mean there with the 4K HQ thing. The 4K HQ is an exclusive feature which the xh2s does not have. This is not talking about 4k prores hq. 4K HQ in the xh2 Downsamples from 8k and preserves shadows better therefore giving it the best dynamic range possible.
      You’re right the xh2s is more organic and I said in my video that the xh2s is definitely the way to go. Even with that said I love how the 4K HQ (non prores) option looks on the xh2.
      You’re right about that if you keep internal noise reduction on in both cameras. If you turn noise reduction to -4 and denoise in post the image cleans up incredibly well. I don’t have a means of testing dynamic range but I do believe Gerald undone did a good job testing this. In his test he’s actually getting almost 15 stops of dynamic range with the xh2s and that’s the average DR not what the camera can see result.
      I will definitely take your advice on the broll comment. I’ve only made a handful of videos and my goal is to improve with every video even if it’s 1% better.

I would suggest you try something… shoot at 4K 30 at 1/60 shutter. Shoot at f2.8 and bring the iso to 5000. In davinci take the footage and use denoise. Set quality to enhanced and temporal noise to around 20. Your computer won’t play back the video smooth so keep the noise reduction off only turn it on when you’re ready to render. This will clean up all the noise 100%. You have to do this with full frame as well don’t let people tell you otherwise. I’ve had many full frame cameras to know the truth.

      Hey! For sure I’ll get something like this made. I will tell you right now that I have tried it and it is MUCH better than the xt4 because the corners don’t wobble like they do on the xt4 especially using a wide lens like the viltrox 13mm.

      @@adnan_velic Yeah I saw that but night footage doesnt really show the full potential I think. BTW, I understand you have both cameras, right? Wouldnt it make more sense to spend the money on something like the Nikon Z9 at that point?

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nordfresse for me personally the z9 is not appealing as it is huge. I already have a good amount of glass that would make a transition tough. The z9 also has a bit less dynamic range and worse rolling shutter than the xh2s. Both of those are much more important to me than a full frame sensor.

    Well there is Panasonic s5 ii...I like fuji color science ...but Panasonic is way over ...even better then Sony a7 r5 ... Fuji xh2s may be lovely ...but the kings in video are Sony and Panasonic for hybrid cameras ... And a Aps sensor has a crop ...full frame sensors are way better👍

      @adnan_velic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Panasonic is a great camera but I’ll stick with my xh2s. A lot of Hollywood movies are shot on s35 sensors and if it’s good for them it’s good for me 👍🏻

    Only better if you do a lot of 4K60 and fast-paced filming, other than that 98.9% identical, actually IBIS is better on H2 and 240fps also... just sayin! 500$ you can save....

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t think you watched the entire comparison. The 4k30 is better, the 4k60 is better and of course you get 4k120. The stacked sensor alone is worth the extra $500 not to mention the better rolling shutter 6.2k open gate, and the extra stop of dynamic range. IBIS is the same from the testing I did and what fuji says. Because I have 4k120 I have not once used 1080 240.

    My man…bit depth has NOTHING to do with dynamic range. Thats a very old myth that needs to die already….the 2 share numbers by coincidence, its nonsense. Sony shoots slog 2 8 biz with 12 stops no problem…will it get blotchy? Yes, but does it affect dynamic range? No.

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re wrong… This information comes directly from fujifilm this isn’t something I made up. Never once have I said if you have 10bit you get 10 stops of dynamic range…. Or 12bit and 12 stops, etc… the number 14bit and the 14+ stops happen to coincide in this particular instance like you said. The xh2s is different compared to 95% of cameras on the market because the sensor DOES INDEED read at 14bit depth where most other cameras read data at 12bit depth. I know that bit depth means the amount of colors in a image this is not rocket science. What’s happening inside the camera is more complicated than that so I just condensed it into what I said. I’m not going to go into technical jargon where 99% of people do not care about that.

    • @adnan_velic
      @adnan_velic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The fact that the camera switches to 14bit mode in body automatically at 30 FPS or less is a feature that is not present in 95% of consumer cameras. If you know of one please tell me because I have never seen it. Due to this 14bit switch the camera verifiably see 1 additional stop of dynamic range. I can also confirm this i the case when I personally shoot and color grade. Here’s a link from dpreview that explains this better.
