I have deep respect for Hamza Yusuf and always hold him in high regard. However, the misconception that Shia Muslims worship Ali stems from pure ignorance. As Muslims who respect all the caliphs, we revere our Prophet (PBUH) and cherish his family and descendants, but we do not worship them.
We perform Hajj in Mecca, not Karbala. Visiting Karbala is simply to pay our respects to Imam Hussain and his companions. We honor their sacrifices and efforts to preserve Islam, ensuring that the caliphs of their time did not bring injustice or division to the community. During the lifetimes of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, or their descendants, there was no formal division between Shia and Sunni. That division emerged much later. As for the Khawarij, they are a separate story altogether, a group of ignorant people who rejected not only the Prophet (PBUH) and Islam but also Ali; they are not Shia.
Yes, some Muslims have gone to the extreme of discrediting the first three caliphs, while others ignore Ali and his contributions. But regardless of whether we identify as Shia or Sunni, we should question our teachings and upbringing. We should all do our own research on the sahaba (companions of the Prophet) and their roles, whether from a Shia or Sunni perspective. After all, we are all Muslims; we worship Allah and recognize that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the last Messenger of Allah who brought us Islam and the Qur'an. After him, the caliphs played a crucial role in preserving Islam and ensuring the Qur'an remained unchanged, even during a time when many unauthentic hadith were circulating.
We must study Islam and the lives of the Prophet’s companions and, importantly, *his family*.
What truly breaks my heart is that many Muslims and scholars do not acknowledge the Prophet’s daughter and her family unless they are Shia. Why isn’t the story of Imam Hussain and Ashura taught to all Muslims? Why don’t we talk more about the immense hardship he endured to protect Islam and help the Muslim community under the oppressive rule of Yazid, a caliph who claimed to be Muslim but did not practice Islam? His descendants continued this struggle, enduring hardship and oppression. There are hadith about the miraculous birth of Imam Mahdi and his role, and from Ali to Mahdi, the Prophet’s teachings and family endured. Why don’t we know more about them?
The fact that each of the Prophet's descendants faced persecution, torture, and death at the hands of the rulers of their time, all while striving to preserve Islam, is a history we cannot afford to overlook.
The suffering of Imam Hussain on Ashura feels eerily similar to what our brothers and sisters in Gaza are experiencing today, yet sadly, most people are unaware of this connection.

Salman Farsi: battle of ditch/trennch: and the covenant that Medina/Yathrub would be protected by Angels and Allah till the end of time. Quicksand/concrete and fortifications of Allah: the animate and inaminate all work for the sake of Allah. Think rather deeply and metaphysically there are places only in Medina and Hijaz where specific Jinn reside. This is not a joke.
