2020 YZ125X Tight Trail Riding

  • Picked up a 2020 Yamaha YZ125X recently. Forgot how much fun it is to ride a 125! The YZ125X feels so light. Need to work the throttle, clutch, and shift lever to keep the engine working though the YZ125X runs better than I expected in the low to mid RPM range. I rode a short section of dried out creek bed today to show how this engine works just putting around exploring or making your own trails. It was about 85F here in Ohio today. The jetting on the this bike is stock though I was running a FMF Factory Fatty pipe and FMF Power Core 2 silencer today. The FMF exhaust gave the engine a little quicker response in the upper mid to top end RPM range. I was expecting a bigger change in power. I am running the suspension with the stock clicker settings and it simply works with a plush and absorbing feel.
    The YZ125X is such a lightweight bike with excellent suspension and a responsive engine...it all adds up to a very fun off road bike!

      Yes the 125X runs great in the slow stuff. Since I posted this video I've leaned the needle 1-notch (3rd to 2nd position) which sharpened up the mid range response a little. Fun bike!

    Awesome, it’s nice to see Yamahas get some love. The Xs are seriously good bikes stock. The 125s are probably some of the most under appreciated bikes. Great video and riding 👍✌️

    What a sharp looking bike! I had a '21 YZ125x that I traded fro a Husky TE250i, love the TE but I miss the 125x a lot! Such a simple bike to maintain.

      I have 300 TPI bikes that I really like. However still amazes me just how well an essentially 2006 model year bike (my 2020 YZ125X) still works today. Hard to beat the Smiles per Mile of a YZ125/X.

    So weird watching the X just lug up a hill or out of a corner I have the 125 no X and holy crap only only top end power and I love it!!

      The Yamaha YZ125X is a fun bike and the "X" tuning on the engine works well off road. Just sold this YZ125X and anxiously waiting for my new 22 YZ125 to show up;)

      @@davidmorcos1463 Yamaha finally made a big update to the YZ125 for 2022 model year and I want to try one. I got sidetracked due to the long delay in '22 YZ125's showing up and picked up a lightly used '22 KTM 125XC from a buddy of mine.....th-cam.com/video/b2uxIIpw7Cw/w-d-xo.html

    Thought I would check out your video since I'm looking for a light weight dirt bike for casual trail riding. Good to see how this 125 goes slow. I may buy one even it is more expensive and lacks electric start compared to the Honda CRF250F and Kawasaki KLX300R

      Very different machine compared to a CRF250F or KLW300R. The YZ125X runs surprisingly well at low rpm and is such a fun bike to ride with a broad performance range. So lightweight it feels like a mountain bike! Kick starting is super easy too. You will have to mix gas/oil on the YZ125X and the power band is narrower but suspension is very capable for trails or even light moto compared to the other bikes you are considering. Off road riding is fun on any bike!

      @@mxengineer1 How would this yz125x compare to a CRF250F? I currently have a CRF250F and was looking to upgrade. You think the yz125x would be a good next step now that I am ready to move on from air cooled trail bikes?

      @@whiteknight2907 That really depends on your riding skill level and what characteristics you like in a dirt bike. The CRF250F has broad smooth easy to ride power. The YZ125X is a race based machine with a much narrower powerband - really need to work the throttle and clutch so keep it moving. The YZ125X is perhaps 45 lbs lighter and that will make handling easier (though the suspension travel is longer so the seat height is higher). YZ125X might be a more challenging bike for you to ride. Talk to your local dealers and experienced motorcycle riding friends - they may have better insights into your skill level and what bike may work best for you!

      @@whiteknight2907 Perfect choices! The YZ250FX and WR250F both have 6-speed transmissions and great KYB suspension and the extra fuel capacity is under the seat so you do not notice (the CRF250RX has a muffin top fuel tank and 5-speed).

      That be nice but it more than likely has a mikuni carb on it. Mine does, which from my understanding STICK metering block only works on Keihen.

      Gear Yes you have to change your carburetor to a keihen 38mm air striker, But it’s totally worth it. Check out Tokyo off-road website, they have the complete Set up for this bike. Hope this helps cheers mate🍻

      Yamaha seems apply moto updates to the "X" versions a model year later so yes if they follow their usual pattern the 2023 YZ125X should be based on the updated 2022 YZ125.

      no not at all it’s a couple miles an hour slower like 3-5

      The Dunlop AT81 rear tires have worked well for me over a variety of riding conditions. The AT81 looses the edge quicker than other tires but still provides decent traction.

      I've not had any issues fouling spark plugs. Maybe confirm the float level height and consider changing the jetting for your temperature and elevation (the manual has recommendations). Hope you get it dialed in.

      No radiator fan and I am not sure you wold need one as these smaller bikes usually use the same radiators as the larger displacement bikes (like 250's) so there is normally a lot of cooling capacity in a 125.

      @@TubolMotoadventures No auto oil system on the YZ125X so you must mix oil into the gas. Beta does offer oil injection on their 200/250/300 2-stroke models. KTM/Husky have fuel injection and oil injection on some of their 150/250/300 2-stroke models

      My 125x is coming in the next few days.. Im excited.. :)

      Some European companies used to make 80cc full size off road bikes to race in the ISDE. I've never ridden one though I have ridden the KX100 and owned a 2007 CRF150R big wheel - they were a lot of fun but a bit small for my 6' 2" frame.
