If any more proof were needed how perfect the Korg NTS-1 is for me a new toy, it makes effortless cinematic drone music. Perfect.
This is a stock NTS-1 with no custom code installed and i'm not even using midi just to show off :) I've cranked up the Riser reverb (which seems to be a reverb and exciter or pitch shift combined) and the Ensemble modulation effect and I'm using a mix of the VPM oscillator (read FM oscillator) the Triangle wave and the Waves oscillator. It's sounds so much like a male voice choir at times its spooky. (Edit: by mix I don't mean two oscillators can be loaded and mixed, i just mean the overall sound of the whole video as the different oscillator types I select pass through the effects section is a made up of VPM, Waves and Triangle selected separately)
By request, here's some approximate setting to try to get the same effect
    From power up:
Reverb: set to Riser, Knob A 50%, Knob B 100%
    Mod: Ensemble, Knob A 50%, Knob B 100%
    EG: ADSR, Knob A 100%, Knob B 100%
    Osc: VPM, Knob A 50%, Knob B 0% (tweak A lots, tweak B a little)
Alternatively, see this video for this patch and more:

If you need to learn how to use the Waves oscillator, see this video I made:

@@ChrisLodyMusic I'm about to do just that Chris (well actually a bit later as we have a visiting 8 year old nephew for a week and he wants his share of the internet and my time!). I have the NTS-1 now cabled correctly with my volcas thanks to Korg support and the sends work correctly now on the mix channels. I do have an issue with the kbd strip which only plays one tone irrespective of where in the scale I touch it. I don't expect to use the kbd strip much and am considering taking it apart but I'll try it first with a midi kbd (I've also raised a ticket with Korg). Other than that I am delighted so far with it. Looking forward to your other videos. Cheers. Lee

Thank you. Yes I've had an issue with noise with it when I power it from the same computer as I'm recording it on, it's a usb ground loop. Assuming that's the problem you're having you can buy a 3.5mm audio isolator or a usb audio isolator. I'd recommend one but I haven't bought one yet. Instead I power it from an iPhone charger and I made a midi to 3.5mm adapter as a work around. I have it cabled in the same way as you btw

Pretty amazing, really impressed with the Gregorian chant-like deep bass starting at :11 . I was having a hard time re-creating it and found the Alt (Knob B) rotation did the trick for the VPM ("UPN" on the mini-screen) wave. What parameter is "Alt" changing to bring in that sound? The documentation says "varies by oscillator", thanks a lot Korg.

Ha yes, the manual is super vague on that information for some reason! The VPM oscillator is an FM pair with knob A being the modulation amount and knob B being the modulation ratio. So a sine waves pitch is affected by another sine wave, with the pitch difference and amount it’s being affected set by the two knobs. High modulation (A) will sound brighter with a high ratio (B) and bassy with a low ratio. Does that make sense? 🤷‍♂️

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

Oh sorry I didn't realise that was my own description. The way I've written that is super misleading sorry, I'll add an edit. What I mean is during the video I switch oscillator types starting at about 1:40 from VPM to waves and so on, the the overall effect across the whole video is a mix of those oscillator types as they combine through the long tail of the reverb. There is no mixing of oscillator types in the traditional sense

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ooh tough one. They are really quite different from each other but I suppose it hinges a lot on how much dawless work you do or if you own a hardware sequencer because the Nts1 doesn't have one where the Keys does. The Nts1 is capable of a much wider pallete of sounds but is only monophonic Vs the 3 note poly of the Keys. I've ended up using the Nts1 more as an effects unit to process other dawless gear than anything else. The effects are excellent it has to be said

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

Yeah sure. You'll likely need an adapter because the input of most pedals is 1/4" mono and the output of the Nts1 is 3.5mm stereo. Also some pedals need a 1/4" mono plug inserted or they won't switch on. So maybe a Y splitter cable and a phono to 1/4" adapter. Should sound awesome :)
