      Seb was on the Union...the fact is the mount Rushmore of F1 will probably be Jim Clarke, Michael Schumacher, Max Verstappen, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Juan Fangio and Max Verstappen. And I don't think anyone would be mad at that..maybe Ascari in there...but I don't know

    JPM was one of the very few drivers who could keep a prime MSC on his toes, I'm a big Schumacher fan but when Montoya was behind him and that piece of Williams didn't break down Michael must check both mirrors at the same time and make that Ferrari as wide as a rugby field to try keep Montoya behind. Also Montoya wasn't intimidated by the name Michael Schumacher like what seemed to happen to other drivers.

    7:23 everyone, including Senna, always forgets the "if it exists" part. He really did have some self-reflection that he should have done after that statement, especially considering a certain turn 1 incident.

    • @charamia9402
      @charamia9402 ปีที่แล้ว

      While the quote was in defense of a move that was definately not on, it still rings true. To be a successful racingdriver you need to have the urge to exploit every opportunity to make a pass. When you're able to finely tune the balance of biding your time and jumping at opportunity, you may become multiple world champion.

    • @Eonymia
      @Eonymia ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charamia9402It's true if you place emphasis on the "if it exists" part. They have to know when a move is on and when it is not. It just becomes more embarrassing when you're a multiple time world champion and are essentially saying that you can't tell when there's no gap. Imagine if Maldonado said the same thing after a similar incident, people wouldn't be defending it because "multiple time world champion". You can be a multiple time world champion and still own up to your screw-ups intentional or not.

    • @charamia9402
      @charamia9402 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Eonymia Absolutely. Senna worded it this way to imply the gap he went for actually existed - which was objectively untrue. A weak defense, but still a brilliant quote.

    Funny how Senna called Prost a coward for vetoing him into becoming his teammate when he did the same to Bellof at Lotus. The only difference is Prost invited Senna to Mclaren with open arms with no clauses, and only decided to veto him later because he felt Senna made the working environment more toxic in 1989

    I love how many who invoke the quote forget how the "no longer go for a gap, you're no longer a racing driver" quote was in defence of very deliberately going for a gap that wasn't there with the intention of taking out his rival...i love senna but the warts and all senna is not the mythical senna.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this clip.
    I'm liking the pivot in format, I think a mix of the more serious deep dives and some more of the light hearted ones such as this work well.
    I grew up in the same era of F1 as you so I enjoy when you haul up 90s and 00's references.
    I'm going to be cheeky here and pop in a suggestion.
    I'm fairly sure you've covered the rise and departure of JPM but I'm not sure people are aware he's as close to the "Triple Crown" as Alonso is.
    Is he as good as Alonso? Arguable.
    He was more raw.
    Talent wise when he's happy and in compatible machinery, he's as good as anyone.
    Or how about Frentzen, Alesi, Berger?
    How good were they actually?

    While the Senna soundbites iconic and very entertaining, they also showed Sennas hypocritical side. He later apologized to Jackie Stewart and admitted that he had deliberately crashed into Prost at Suzuka in 1990. And for all his anger at Prost in 1992 for blocking him from joining Williams, Senna had done the same to Derek Warwick and Lotus in 1986.
