I really enjoyed the emphasis Ryan made on "having whats appropriate for your life" instead of trying to imitate someone else's doings in this regard. I did try extreme minimalism for a while, including a uniform-style wardrobe, but it ultimately did not make me happy. I get a lot of enjoyment from having at least some flexibility and creativity in my wardrobe.
I bought a Pakt One bag and It Came in yesterday! Guys Josh & Ryan were not lying! This freaking bag is incredible!! Never spent $275 for a bag! But let me tell you I’m going to have this bag forever! Made so well and Luxurious! Thanks Simpletons!
I used to have a big wardrobe and I love fashion still but I was so inspired by your documentary I got rid of most of my clothes and trying to find my uniform 😄 is actually really fun. Cant wait to keep down sizing. Has been a big improvement in my life!!!
very excited that living room conversations is back!! would like to see some of the older pictures you refereed to of when you had clothes that were just not the best for you. Thanks for all you do!
Capsule idea helped to focus on buying needed items that could be used to give different looks. I remember this in the 80’s as a teenager, my mom took us shopping with this idea in mind. We were passing around clothes from different family members as well. We were frugal in a time when everything was bigger & bolder. Like the conversation here. Keeping it simple is so much easier. 😀
I remember growing up that when someone wearing a lot of black was usually put into the Emo and Goth category even though you weren’t. Or you would get someone cheekily say, “where’s the funeral?” It’s so nice that it’s not like that now and we’re free to wear black all day everyday without those comments. Thank you for this video guys. Love your work! #nzbound
I used to get those comments too about wearing all black. I was self conscious about my body weight and black looks slimming. Now I wear colours as well as long as I like the outfit 😁👍
I'm in my 60's and grew up in New York city where black was the uniform for most people. It was easy, sophisticated and almost created a pre-minimalist vibe. Those who said, 'where's the funeral,' were dismissed as being unsophisticated or not with it.
@@jodrew1845 wow! I never new that. I think because I live in California/OC people always used to expect me to dress with beach attire. But now its so different. I'm so glad I stop caring what people think about my clothes.
@@GFlor-tz1wv isn't it liberating to not give a hoot what people think? I've always operated on that premise, so if something was 'in' and made sense, I was completely embracing it but if it didn't feel comfortable I wouldn't adapt it. I grew up on the 'Isley Brothers' who sang 'It's your thing,' what can I say, lol.
I have a capsule wardrobe when it comes to jeans, dress pants, reg pants... All neutrals When it comes to tops it's hard because I like to have both neutrals and colours. I don't follow trends.. I just buy what I like/love 😁
The main thing I took from this is ‘having Whats appropriate for your life’. I try to keep my wardrobe as simple as possible. Being in the UK, we need to have suitable clothing throughout the year as we very much experience all four seasons. Having said that, I dont need to over indulge in clothing. I could fit my whole wardrobe into a carry on suitcase and probably still have room!
I used to think I couldn't let go of my clothes because I wanted to be creative and express myself through it. Then I realized I wear the same stuff all the time...Maybe I just liked the idea of creativity.
so true about mannequins. i looked at most of the seemingly great fitted dresses only to have paper clips on the mannequin's back, cinching the waist line to make it look better on display 😟
I find that as a woman, my wardrobe needs are slightly more than that of my male counterparts. I work in healthcare so at work I wear scrubs, traveling to and from work, tee shirts and jeans are perfectly fine along with the weekends. I have kept a few dressier pieces of special occasions and augment them with accessories. In this way, I have only kept the pieces that I; enjoy, love, look great in while not having that feeling of deprivation.
I have to do capsule. Only one closet in my house that I share with my hubby and it's only storage in our house besides my dresser drawers and a chest. Lol Since I now have salt and pepper hair I moved to mostly black and white with a few light colors if I'm feeling like color. Lol Much easier to get dresses too 😍😍😍
I really enjoyed this video a lot! It was short and engaging. In a home setting that felt comfortable, safe and inviting. I felt like I was connecting in a deeper more personal level with you guys and the message. Did I mention how much I liked this? :-D
As someone who hasn't had a haircut in 7 years and has a beard over a foot long, don't put that boring on us. If short hair and a smooth face makes the man feel good about himself than I'm all for it. For me, long hair speaks more to my personality, and I have way more confidence looking the way I do.
@@leemires5315 cheers lee! That speaks truth & I hope more people think that way. For years I had long hair to cover a scar I have in the back of my skull. It was horrible having to hide it my whole childhood over fear of being bullied. As an adult I embraced my scar & began to cut my hair & I also trimmed my beard! Now I’m confident than ever & encourage others to do the same!
Having to stay at home more than ever has probably got most of us wearing a 'uniform.' Eg. Sweats, hoodies, sneakers, etc. It will be interesting to see how we dress after the pandemic. Will we be joyful about finally being able to move freely and dress up, or will we feel more free by not having to make dressing complicated and expensive? I'm watching.😊
What would you guys do if someone you cared about invited you to their formal wedding? Not go, borrow or rent a suit? It seems that you ascribe to a casual minimalism, but can their be a more dressier minimalism?
No if you sitting in Kitchen and play old music and have fun Family chats. I don't fellow or shadow behind the latest Fashion or live place like California is so Fashion . You have great living room chat and look great on you both!
It is the theory that the average person only wears 20 % of the clothing they own. So why not just wear that 20% and develop a "suitable lifestyle uniform" that you are comfortable in? Each person has a unique character that can be reflected in material types, color, patterns, refined simplicity, etc. If the choices we make are in keeping with our "authentic self" then we will be happier people who are seen for who we really are. We can be valued for being ourselves.
I wake up before the Sun and before anyone else in the house. I have a capsule wardrobe and everything in specific spots in the dresser and closet. I can grab my clothes and, if I choose, get dressed in the dark and it will always match.
I was going to ask this question! We live in Tennessee and have had many power outages over the past year....more than in say the last 7 years put together. I probably wouldn't be a minimalist by this channel's standard, but I am a person that is constantly striving toward minimizing. We have flashlights, oil lamps, camping stove, portable propane heater, solar radio, and a good supply of food, hygiene, first aid. So I guess I would be a minimalist prepper. :)
I sure they do and just have a bag of light stuff for needs and fill it with any need at time then rest is stored in a space or area to snag at anytime it needed. from what i seen and read, minimalist just do not have any clutter and stick with basic needs or wants any, so the less u got the less u gotta clean anytime. and over time u may toss or donate any u not want or need no more for any reason so just have more space for stuff u still wanna keep any.
Minimalism is about having the thing's you need. If you're preparing for emergencies, thats different from hoarding alot of usless garbage like frilly, poorly made H&M clothing you're never going to wear but 2 times before it falls apart. It's better to have say 1 or 2 dresses that are well made that can be put away fo special occasions and save your money for emergencies.
That’s like asking if minimalists care about capsule wardrobes. Some do, some don’t. Joshua and Ryan specifically talk about food emergency preparedness in a recent podcast. To sum it up, they don’t stockpile food. They believe that minimalism is the ultimate emergency preparedness because they are always surrounded by what they use and need, and they know where those things are when they need them.
I'm really curious though if you have a favorite brand of t-shirt that you wear, since you wear it so often? Obviously you want a quality t-shirt that's not going to wear out quickly when you have to wash it often. Same for jeans...
Also we refer to these pants as jeans however their original name was dungarees. The word dungrees came about via the British colonial era in India, where the heavy cotton cloth known in Hindi as woven in the 'Dungri' method. That cloth originated for ship sails and tent's but later migrated for use in clothing such as work pants (jeans), or duster coats (think, cowboys) or capes in the 17th century.
I think it's absolutely more difficult for women in going minimal with the closet. I can stay quite minimal on most of the things, even with the company structure, but not my closet =]]~ I used to work in the fashion industry and fashion is such an important part of my life. What is the point of being a minimalist if you have to give up on what you love? I find myself much happier with a not-so-minimal closet. Every morning, I can wake up and experience different feeling with many options. And I love planning my outfits on weekend. I only follow 1 rules by Marie Kondo, keep only the things that Spark Joys. After tidying up my closet with the KonMari method and give away 2/3 of what I owned, I only keep and shop for something that I absolutely love and enjoy wearing - nothing under that standard of joy, nothing-at-all.
I have too but it gets easier. All the things I had as "maybe" to keep or remove i left in my closet and months later when I looked at them again, then it was easier to let them go as i hadn't used them or had the want to.
Do you think capsule wardrobes are more for women, because we THINK we have to have variety and a large selection? Most guys I know don't seem to really care but can look sharp in the basic, same thing.
i think they are a central source of information or ideas, even an inspiration for many(i didn't say majority); so what they're sharing is actually important.
I have never bought anything with famous logo. That was always below me. "Cheap" and shallow showing off. And why the hell I would like to advertise some company for free by wearing their logo on my chest?

Jeans originates from the California gold rush because the didn’t fall apart as quickly as everything else
Also we refer to these pants as jeans however their original name was dungarees. Jeans are not really american of origin. However Strauss did add rivets and popularize them. Many of his earlier products were not even blue.
Jeans are from Genoa, Italy! (as the name says)
