  • "How To Make a Chore Coat" is an instructional video to go alongside our first RCI - DIY capsule collection online now. In this video we're making the RCI Chore Coat Kit with Khaki Corduroy. The collection, as of right now, features an RCI Field Sewing Kit, a 3-pack of RCI embroidered patches and the RCI Chore Coat Kit in 7 different fabrics we had in the studio. More fabrics will be made available as they become available to us.
    "On paper, this is just materials, but after around 40 steps (or magic) this will be something you can be proud of. The print on the fabric can go anywhere on the garment or not at all. Get creative, have fun. Thank you for participating."
    Video directed by Tom Winslade (tomwinsla.de)

    I wish every tutorial was filmed just like this. Everything you need, and I didn’t have to increase my playback speed once!

    I'm shook by how you used NO PINS! Great sewalong. I really want my spouse to order a kit so I can sew it for him.

    Corduroy has a definite nap...people should be instructed to ensure all pattern pieces have the same orientation-- not turn upside down to save on fabric.

      @boogaloobomber9889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, dont fold it in half before cutting?

    • @mynameisnotgirl8184
      @mynameisnotgirl8184 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boogaloobomber9889 when you initially lay out fabric for cut, especially if you purchased from a fabric store, there’s already a fold in it. Any pattern pieces that require placement on fold should be pinned in this area. You’re doing so to insure that you are getting a perfectly symmetrical piece as in a collar, some garments that don’t require a seam in the main pieces, etc.
      The weird edges of the fabric (that weren’t cut at the fabric store) are called selvage edges which should always be even and aligned parallel with the fabric fold for most sewing projects unless noted it should be cut otherwise.
      When sewing with fabrics like corduroy, velvets and any fabric with a nap (a raised textured pattern in fabric that you can actually feel), the pieces should always be pinned and faced in the same direction.
      Store patterns usually include arrows on the pattern pieces so that you will always know what direction to cut the pieces on your fabric.
      Hope I didn’t confuse you and it helps!

    I smiled all the way through this. I love my jacket. Wanted to buy the kit because it's an awesome idea to support designers, in this challenging time. But...I still smiled all the way through. ( I'm decrepit, ancient etc. Designing and sewing, since I was about 5. Several lifetimes). And I still love my jacket.

    How would you recommend adding elbow patches to this coat? Probably before stitching sleeves, but I am not sure about the placement. Any suggestions?

    • @bluesSGL
      @bluesSGL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Temporarily baste the sleeves together and to the bodice. Try it on and mark with a pencil or chalk on the sleeves where your elbows are. That's how I'd do it.

    This is a Carhartt jacket with the top pocket moved to the other side, cuffs, back centre seam and x-fork removed(the standard 10% change required to avoid copyright). Then flowered up with some patches. Its made with such flimsy material it resembles a shirt. You could buy real Duck canvas from BigDuck canvas company, a work jacket pattern and make it for way less than the price of this. Or go hardout and make the pattern yourself. One of the Winifred Aldrich books on pattern drafting, mens, women's or children's are best. This jacket pattern is very easy to do from her books.
