it just blows my mind the enormity of your work. I'm in '22 looking for ways to emboss, and boom there you are 10 years ahead of me. This is great. It's really nice to have someone who is knowledgeable, and can be trusted. Thank you for the surprise instruction!
Edit to add: WOW @ that rolling pin.

This was a great video. I remember when I first started crafting way back in the "dark ages" we used a rubber mallet and tapped the design in the paper and we made our own stencils out of cardboard or thin wood. I don't have any of those great machines used today but I still do manage. Thanks

Thank you for sharing, I love that you are using the same techniques I used when I first started crafting some 15 years ago! You also have the same stencils an texture plates. I must get them out again!. I found that an upside down glass oven dish over a led tealight works just as well as a lightbox. ( in fact you don't have to use you precious storage space ;) )

I just discovered this for myself with the embossing folders this morning. I settled on plain old damp printer paper after using other weights of paper. I tried many things and the least messy and best that I came up with was 2 pieces of damp printer paper with 3 pieces of thin tin foil between them. Then let dry with the foil left in the center because when I separated the foil from the paper some of the shape relaxed out as the paper dried. In the back of my old mind I remember something about embossing with heavy clothing starch. As soon as I go to the store I will be trying that to. Dampen the paper with heavy starch instead of water.

Thank you for the clear explanation, now I can't imagine why I wanted to throw everything out (because I don't have a too expensive machine ..)

Thanks so much for putting this video up! I was right on the verge of buying an embossing machine, as I've seen so many great cards (I'm purely a card-maker/artist) with embossing used and have wanted to try it for ages but never had any luck with things I'd tried to use - but now I'm going to go straight for the embossing folders/plates/stencils and forget about paying for an expensive machine (that may not work out anyway).

I wondered what those brass stencils were for!!!!! I've had a lovely afternoon using them to emboss some pretty pearlized card for focal points for my cards and matching envelopes .. sure, they took a bit of time but I had a lot of fun. I have lots of styluses in various sizes, and you don't need a light box .. just place your stencil face down on a piece of foam (I used thin packing foam, but it's not absolutely necessary to use it at all) and rub a bit of soap or a candle over the back of your paper (use a corner) which helps to highlight exactly where the negative space of your stencil is that you want to rub over with your stylus. Too easy!! And now that I've seen how to use a rolling pin with embossing folders I'm not even going to bother to buy the Big Shot I've been considering for such a long time ... I wouldn't use it enough to warrant such an expense, and the shipping costs are nearly as much as the machine. So thank you .. This was THE most useful crafting video EVER!!! LOVE YOUR VIDS : )

I also love to make backgrounds by using the scoring board, you can make straight or random designs with it while watching the frugal crafter - LOL. Lindsay, when I watched you use this expensive rolling pin for this technique my heart dropped. It looks mouth blown and I`m sure that glass fanatics would pay quite a sum to have it :) Thanks a lot !!! Hugs, Josi

Thanks v. much for sharing this. I've just tried it with a cheap embossing folder and a wooden rolling pin. Here's my experience with it: rolling the rolling pin back and forth gave me a reasonable emboss at the edges but not much in the middle - whether this is because I was only using paper and the folder is sized for card, or whether it's because it;s a cheap folder I don't know. I could have shimmed the middle (put some smaller card underneath the middle to create greater pressure there), but I decided to try using the end of the rolling pin and running it with pressure over each part of the design. This worked a treat! And was really quick. I tried spraying with water but it didn't seem to make any difference except that my card went wavy - but as yet I've only tried light card, so the water might work better with medium/heavy card. I have a rubber mallet in the garage and will try bashing it all over with that next to see if it's easier than leaning down on the upright rolling pin and moving it around (the current method) or produces better results. Goodoh!!!! :)

Something I did when I was experimenting with a stencil and embossing hand tool - after embossing the design, leave the stencil on - use a fingertip shading pad lightly put ink onto the design. After it's all done you will have a coloured embossment. If you want, use Glossy Accents on the colour which gives extra height and a faux epoxy look. It looks pretty awesome.

    • @naomidunbar719

I'm SO HAPPY to have found this tutorial through a card making group I am apart of on facebook! (they have a document where people post links to some awesome tutorials so that people can share ideas and techniques etc...) Yours is second! I am so glad that I clicked on it! Now I am looking for a rolling pin and those stylus tools that you used to try these ideas. I am am currently borrowing a friends machine but eventually they will want it back! :)

Omigosh I love you!♥♥♥ I bought 3 of those embossers thinking they were stencils and waited too long to take them back. I realized I had no idea how to work them!! Of course, I don't have a Cricket thingie...otherwise... I would know what to do with them. lol
So thank you so much for your great tips. I just tried mine your way and YAY!!! I can't thank you enough for my very pretty embossed papers!! You have a new sub and fan. I can't wait to see more! Hugs and kisses~

That rolling pin is a real jewel, I would be afraid of using such a fine (and expensive glass blown) piece of art for those projects (if it's real glass of course) :) Your ideas are great and thanks for sharing!

it is glass but very durable and not too expensive, I bought it for $8 at a flea market
