Like a cross-face in high school wrestling (US folkstyle anyway) where it’s used to turn the head by putting sideways pressure on the face.

The bicep slicer is often illegal at lower levels, though it depends on the rule set at which belts exactly. The major reason is that it is quite hard for the person in it to tell how serious it is. It hurts but there is not the urgent reflex to tap that you feel when a joint is compromised. Thus injuries happen when people are not familiar with that and refuse to tap quick enough.

Those so called cheating tricks in judo are a staple in Catch Wrestling. Catch allows that and even more sinister, punishing moves, on the mat. I've trained in BJJ as well, and Catch wrestling is at another level of brutality, at least from the style I learned from Larry Hartsell. But yeah, I suppose Judo and Catch do share some similarities!

Don Frye mentioned in one of his old training videos that a lot of sneaky punches are thrown from collar holds in Judo matches.

In Competition, gentlemanly Judo is the only way to go. For self defense, dirty Judo is the way to go.
Very much an injustice to see her grab the hair to throw her opponent and was still awarded the win. Given that we have instant replay technology and the judges stood by her declared victory reeks of corrupt officials. Her opponent made incredible sacrifices to get that shot at the title only to be robbed by the judges. We must despise injustice & corruption wherever we see it. Another great educational Judo video from Chadi. I envision someday you'll recieve a tenth dan for outstanding contributions made towards the art of Judo. And your Judo educational videos will be part of that outstanding contribution to the art. Thank you. Shukran sadiq. Merci boucoup.

Years ago a Russian judoka black belt was showing us that knee push to setup a throw. I mentioned that it seemed dangerous and his response was "yes, for a moment you are vulnerable." Not what I meant, ha. And I'm sure every judo practitioner has been on the receiving end of their opponents knuckles when they go for the choke. I don't think I've ever seen it taught in the traditional sense, just passed down through experience.

Another couple we were taught is that competitive judoka would go weeks without showers so you didn't get too close when grappling and the other is that if you didn't roll your gi properly at the legs or you had too much length on the cuff, judoka would step INTO the pant leg cuff and use it to pin your effect your kuzushi.

There are many tricks for juji gatame but one of the dirtiest tricks I’ve ever seen in in yoko shiho gatame you drive your shin into the ribs of the opponent and then you do and up and down motion. It’s nasty because it causes a lot of discomfort cause the person who this is done loose focus on trying to escape.

There is no rule in IJF Judo forbidding the "biceps slicer". It's an elbow lock. Ude sankaku garami. We've been practicing it at our club for over a decade. People assume it's illegal because they're not used to seeing it in a Judo setting but nobody can point to any rule which forbids the action.

Ishii is wearing a red and white belt which signifies a 6th or 7th dan, I believe. When he won the Olympics, he was maybe a 3rd or 4th dan and then went straight into MMA at the dismay of the Japanese Judo Federation. Do you know when and where he received his rank?

I like the gentlemanly sport of Judo. But I can't help marvel at the effectiveness of hair pulling. "Where the head goes, the body follows." is a maxim.
I think hair pulling should be allowed. You have to keep a little "street" in you.

“Dirty tricks” have a purpose in self defense and can be used to improve your judo…although it becomes more like its parent art of jujitsu at that point. For sport, absolutely no place for it. IMO

Would you rather be a champion with medals or a soldier with scars? the competition is a game, whoever has a better game wins, but it is still a game. that's why martial arts and competitions exist, in martial arts there is macdojo, more popularized by theatrical techniques and videos with mega views, but there are some who continue to teach martial arts, teach naked and raw self defense, no acronyms or advertising, they only teach animals to control themselves, nothing more. these so-called dirty tricks are just some slovenliness of a competitive posture.

Hi Chadi, there is a simple 'trick' that is not illegal or 'dirty' IMHO. If uke turtles, straddle his back. Flatten him out onto stomach, Slide knees up toward uke's arm pits. Use your forearm as a lever on Uke's forehead to lift his chin and expose his neck. Then slide other hand in for a cross choke/shime waza. Must be quick about it or Referee will call Mate. Have you tried this? Rules may have changed so maybe it isn't legal anymore?
