    Really appreciate all your efforts. It seems very likely to me that the same type of anchor will perform differently relative to other anchors as the weights increase. I think you mentioned this yourself when discussing Bruce anchors and it has been my ( anecdotal) experience. My 78 (?) lb Rocha is not bothered much by kelp at all. Very interesting test, thank you.

    I applaud your efforts; all experimentation reveals something. My big concern anchoring is the buildup of weed against the shank as the anchor moves, and I don't think that there is anything that can be done about it. There are some places like Isla Mujeres Mexico where that happens - a combination of soft bottom and intense undergrowth. I considered razor-sharpening the shank but that would be unpleasant to handle. If you can fix anchoring in a bottom like that you'll make million.

    Hi Steve - the Rocna anchor you tested is really the Vulcan (I know you know this). While it is made by Rocna, the Vulcan is a really different anchor.

      Sigh....yes, the weather has turned. We shot that just before the wildfire smoke rolled in. End of August.

    In my experience, kelp beds need lots of tip weight and sharp points to stand a chance. There are only 2 seabeds that my mantus 15kg struggles with. Kelp and stoney. I haven't found anything that works on them.

    Spade... My anchor. Holds in everything I've thrown at it.

      Spade seems like a great anchor. I've never seen one in the wild. Never seen one at a marine store.

    Had a Rocna anchor drag in weeds last year. With the small engine on the boat we thought the anchor was set but before going to sleep we went out to check and with the increased wind we had draged. I am still trying to find a good anchor for weeds.

    Best anchor for weed or kelp is the old fashioned fisherman's anchor. Its narrow flukes don't slide but penetrate. Bill Griffiths Master Mariner 40 years.

    I would be really interested in a study of tandem anchoring with these anchors in different combinations. So much difference of opinion on this, I would love to see the proof. Love what you do!

      Thanks larry, An "in water" tandem anchor test would be extremely difficult to film. However, I am planning a "beach test' (pull with vehicle) soon. Maybe that will be an opportunity for filming some tandem anchoring behavior.

    Steve, great job with these videos. This is a lot of time and effort, but you really highlight the strengths and flaws of these anchors well. I have never been fond of the sponsored anchor tests, and many of the tests I have seen are flawed in their approach. You do a great job! Do you have a spreadsheet that compiles the results of all the anchors you have tested? Tip to total weight ratio, pass/fail the 10 reset test, whether heaping was visible with the deep set test, etc. It would be great to have a a table that pulls all of this information together for all of the anchors you have tested. Also, do you have a favorite anchor to date? Keep up the good work!

      Thanks tallbikercat. I am currently in the process of compiling a spreadsheet with the data you suggested and more. It is proving to be quite time consuming as I must mine data from the many hours of video, and old notes. Might have the job done in a week or two. "Favorite anchor?" I no longer have a favorite, permanent or 'best pick' anchor. I now have many great anchors and they ALL have strengths and weaknesses.

    Thank you. I've been dying to see you do a comparison of the Vulcan vs Spade. Is that on the menu?

    • @flygoodwin
      @flygoodwin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be impractical to produce a comparison video for each anchor pair. However, I am currently working on a spread sheet with data and comments for all the anchors that I have tested. I will include the "Video #(s)" associated with each anchor so that folks can quickly locate relevant films.
