  • In this video, I test a 27lb, Aluminum Spade A 100. This anchor has the same size/shape fluke as the 45lb. Steel Spade S100. Comparisons are made between the two.

    Best testing procedures I can think of after 30 years of extensive anchoring reading. You have definitely enter the Nigel Calder’s pantheon. A true reference even if some anchor manufacturers may remain silent. Keep it up!

    Great as always!
    I belive there is a argument to made for comparing this A100 at 26lb to other 26lb range anchors. Weight up on the bow can be an issue for both boat and back! ;) My gut feeling is i would rather go for a A100 then a steel any steel anchor at the same weight if a storm was brewing and i had to choose.

    Great job! Im ready to see those kingstons in action. Also very curious on soft mud holding numbers of the steel excel #5 with the new rig.

    Am learning lots from you. Thanks. Am hoping that you'll test the Sarca Excel no 4 gal. anchor. It's of a size that makes it interesting to me and I suspect that its interesting to a lot of people because of its potential for use on sub 40 foot boats. Regards and thanks again.

    Steve. Thank you for this continuing project and all of the information from it. I bought an old used fortress fx 37. I see that fortress appears to not feature on your tested anchors table. How come?

      @flygoodwin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello R H, Unfortunately, I lack an appropriately sized Fortress (like your FX-37) to include on my "45lb." Chart. That said, I do include the FX-16 (10lb) on the "20lb" anchor charts. Look for this chart in next week's video as I will be featuring a new anchor in this range (Quickset 22).

      @@flygoodwin you are welcome to use mine for purposes of the test. It does not have the appendages that help it set in some bottoms, and is used but in good condition. What would be a least expensive way of shipping it? I’ll give it some thought.

    It might be proper to compare these aluminum anchors with other anchors of similar weight. Price is one factor, as is size, but when I buy an anchor my main consideration is weight. (How much can I hoist up the bow roller?) Can we compare your 1-5 scores for aluminum anchors against your scores for similarly weighted steel anchors?

    • @flygoodwin
      @flygoodwin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a comparison to 27 lb. Steel anchors would be great. Unfortunately the closest steel anchors that I have only weigh 22 lbs. The 21 lb. Steel Spade that I have is really in a different category. That said, as the accurate holding power numbers from the winch testing arrive, we can certainly compare any anchors we wish.

    My excel#6 anchor dragged me yesterday. 40kt gusts and 2.6m swell on 5 m depth.
    Chain 10m and rope 45m
    Boat is 11ton

      Bottom: gray mud (cobblestone on the shores)
      Location: Lunenburg harbour, NS
      Rode: 10m chain 10mm, and 50m dyneema 10mm.
      Once dragged, I dropped spare anchor 25kg SQR on 30m with zero effect.
      Started engine, got entangled - side and rear to the weather. Waves flooded cockpit. Untied the spare (lost it).
      The excel kept reseting and dragging across the bay on collision course with famous Bluenose.
      After 2-3 hrs, at midnight I stopped just 20 meters from it.
      Lesson: use as much chain as possible.

      @@qb6025 was anything fouled on the anchor when you brought it up?

      @@MrAthlon4800 anchor was clear. It rather caught the last mooring. I intentionality motored around it several times.
      Problem was, that dyneema does not absorb wave jerking. I wish I could measure the forces.
