      As much as you a reasonable person would internalise this level headedly I think in masses it would actually go quite badly. As we see when scientists say probabilities humans in mass seem to lean on the side of the lessor probability even without a competent understanding of probability. Simply because they want certainty. Leadership is very difficult and in my observation ambiguity as much as it might seem like a breathe of fresh air to the "reasonable person" in public masses it decreases the weight of the voice especially when effective policy implementation is urgently needed. You can't have overwhelmed ICU's and leave it to people to make a choice on a information they can't properly grasp in most cases.

      A big lesson for everyone is that if you honestly do not have the answer to a question is that it is actually ok to say, "I don't know".
      There have been a number of times that experts have gotten egg on their faces throughout crises including this one, because their egos would not allow them to say the words, "I don't know", instead choosing to give an expedient answer to try to maintain their status as "experts".
      The arrogant certainty with which Fauci has portrayed every answer to every question during this pandemic even when he contradicts his prior answers or pronouncements has been a gross disservice to both public health and public discourse.

    • @martinezjw1
      @martinezjw1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That might be true, but consider this:
      When Fauci made that statement, we (meaning our collective body of knowledge) had not pinned down SARS CoV2's mode of transmission....it could have been via contact, droplet, airborne, or 2/3 or 3/3 of those in relative amounts....so at that time, for all we knew, masks could have INCREASED transmission of the virus (for example, if contact was the primary mode of transmission, since people tend to touch their face and then wipe their mucus membranes, up to hundreds of times per day)....in fact there are interviews with Fauci where he stated this very fact about masks, early on.
      We now know that the primary mode of transmission is droplet, and only recently did we have mounting evidence that airborne transmission certainly occurs but not as commonly as droplet (to be fair, we had a hint that airborne transmission was occuring early on in the pandemic). But contact transmission seems to be less common than we initially thought...it took TIME and a whole lot of work from dedicated scientists to learn more about the way SARS CoV2 is transmitted. So when Fauci made that statement, he certainly thought that mask supply was an issue and should be saved for healthcare/frontline workers (too complex to explain here, but healthcare workers in essence get rid of their masks/gowns as they exit a contaminated room).
      Fauci and others had little clue whether people just walking around everywhere with a mask on their face was overall protective for other people, or for themselves. It took the scientific process (including ingenious study at Mayo Clinic and other institutions) and TIME for us to discover that wearing masks in public could cut transmission of SARS CoV2.
      Everyone criticizing Fauci for what he said EARLY ON about general public wearing masks is using the power of HINDSIGHT

      @@martinezjw1 who cares? His job is to deliver science to the masses. If he doesn't know something to be absolutely true through the scientific process he should just say that. • @thomasjr8318
      @thomasjr8318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@martinezjw1 This is nonsense. Already in very early February, 2020, there were reports and papers from China about asymptomatic transmission and aerosol transmission. (I know this because I live in China and had been very closely following preprints and news reports on that matter.) For example, there was a paper published in a Chinese-language journal about a transmission occurring over 8 meters distance within a bus somewhere in China. Yet all the Western democracies at the time were saying transmissions is only via big droplets and only symptomatic. Even in March, some countries were still denying asymptomatic transmission, and when I say countries, I mean their chief scientists. And I think only in May or so, it became mainstream that aerosol transmission occurs. The only thing Fauci and all the other medical science leaders had to do, were to read the quickly emerging literature in China and other Asian countries where the pandemic started to emerge, and not just those published by Western universities.

      I find it odd that in Lex's analysis of what transpired and what led to his conclusion that Fauci failed, that he never mentioned the immense opposition to science he was facing as a leader. I mean, I don't come here to hear someone talk about politics but you have to lay out the facts. It was clear that it was very much his opinion but I find it very disappointing. The last two years have felt like practitioners of science, physics, facts, and common sense fighting against an overwhelming ignorance like that of the 1600s constantly yelling, "WITCH!" This effort to to ignore facts that happened to take place in the political arena ruins objectivity. Podcasters can begin to sound one sided. If we have to choose between Health or Freedom, in my opinion Health is more important than Freedom, because if you are severally (or deadly) ill, you cannot enjoy your life nor your freedom! BUT to be healthy you have to be able to choose the best option among the options you have available to protect/improve your health.
      People who take vaccine are more afraid of the virus (because of lifetime Health issues or Dead). And people who dont get the vaccines are more afraid of the long or side affects of the new vaccines (or even dead). Actually, people of both sides are very much afraid to loose their Health and Life (not their freedom).
      So: Everybody should be free to choose, if they want to take the vaccine or not. And we should be enough mature yo accept that other people choose the other way: that is called democracy of the 20th and 21th century.
      And a democratic government have to guarantee this free choice.

    While agree on the “buck stops at the top” point. Windy opening society not only has the kids issue that was correctly brought up. But as we have seen in more open areas the health system begins to buckle. So then the health system stops functioning for the rest of society. I truly see a risk for everyone here. It’s like a speed limit. We could not have any but then there is a high probability of more fatal accidents. So the personal choice of one who chooses not to abide by a suggested compromise can risk others in society. It’s complicated for sure. And it’s tricky to navigate but long term. Having limits to the opening until we get transmissions down seems like the correct choice.

    I would like to hear the actual anti-Fauci crowd themselves articulate the problem with him this way. Instead it's just a lot of ad hominems, political tribalism and anti-science rhetoric. It is very interesting to see each political side constantly trying to weaponize such nuanced points of view as in this video.

      I wasn't really "anti-Fauci" until I heard/read that he continued gain of function research during the Trump admin after Obama admin prohibited; Im still not anti Fauci per se but I think thats irresponsible on his part. Outside of that, most anti Fauci clowns try to say he released COVID on purpose and some believe it was to get Trump out of office...which is incredibly laughable to me.

I feel like Vincent was interested in understanding Lex's perspective, and did not defend Fauci's position at least as much as he usually does. I must say this is very disappointing to see a lot of shortsightedness in your take on this all. The authenticity of fauci was a result of the current president when this all started. To not understand and see the layers that needed to be navigated and to think the intelligent questions you posed would have added another layer of elitism to the situation. The same way you don’t have all the answers regarding the future of AI yet feel all of the answers existed in regards to the virus is a failure to reach a parallel.

      Its almost as if Lex failed to watch any of the press conferences where you could just feel the pressure on not just Dr. Fauci, but EVERYONE who spoke, from the President of the United States who stood as if he were presiding over some kind of courtroom. If he judged you were speaking anything contrary to the lies that he himself broadcast on a daily basis from the oval office, you would be terminated. It was so clear while it was happening, Dr. Fauci knew that if he was fired, he would be replaced by someone who would quite possibly give unscientific and possibly harmful advice. This was so obvious, I have a hard time believing someone as thoughtful as Lex missed it.

It's a logical stalemate. Human response to the pandemic is another example why world peace can never be achieved. Force will always lead to conflict which in turn leads to more force and so on.
