How many times have I had to say "Gah. No. Fuck. NOT A$AP Rocky." only to get a confused look like I just told them that the sky was green.
Especially frustrating since Aesop was using the name about a decade earlier than A$AP.

y@@muhammad608 Thankfully Aesop does not stoop to the lowest common denominators such as yourself. Colourful language and eclectic subject matter are most assuredly his fundament yes, and both are definite catalysts for perplexion among the lyrically analphabetic.
See what I did there? You will have your preferences of course in regard to voice and personality, but verbosity does not a bad artist make. It is fortunate though that your limitations have no bearing on the artform.
@@TheN9nth Aesop would be a great science and literature professor. As a rapper he is terrible, basically he makes music for nerdy college kids who don't care about Hip Hop at all. His audience are just backpackers of Hip Hop. He is at the same level of NF, Tom MacDonald who whines all the time. Rap is supposed to be entertaining and competitive which Aesop lacks. Real rap is Jay Z, Nas, Redman, Drake etc. Aesop is just a college professor who bores students to death. And no Hip Hop enthusiast respects or acknowledges Aesop.
The line "Get out the car, Aes" is also literally him urging himself to physically get out of his car, as the next track is "Shrunk" where he walks into his therapist's office. So he was sitting in a parking spot delaying having to get out of the car and walk into the office.

Been a Aesop fan for coutless years, I think one of the things that I enjoy the most about his music is high long it takes to digest songs I come back to years after the first listen I hear knew meaning and things that I understand with, Aesop talks alot about duality and sometimes you dont notice the other side of the meaning until you have felt it in your life, his song are living creatures and I come back to the same tracks over and over and feel new feelings years of years. I will treasure this music for as long as I can

Aesop Rock will probably never become highly popular during his own lifetime but it’s so obvious to anyone who’s really listened to his work that he will transcend time and one hundred, one thousand years from now he will be talked about in the same way classical artists are talked about today; I’m not being hyperbolic either, he is literally a genius, his writing skills are on par or better than any classical writer you want to put forth

I was very happy to see this run across my feed. Dude is a serious hero of mine. Spirit World Field Guide is one of those masterpieces that will get more and more popular as people start to see deeper into their own minds, which appears to be a global trend initiated by an adaptation to information overload.

@@muhammad608 His vibe is detached to be sure, but I think you should look a little deeper into the lyrics before you write him off entirely. He's helped me grow as a writer in general just by studying his wordplay.

There's more to Hip Hop than cramming millions of words together in a single song, Aesop should quit rap and just be an English Professor.

The density of his lyrics is my favorite thing about Aesop. I could listen to the same song a thousand times and dissect a new meaning, or reference, or just general understanding out of the lyrics every single time. Every song is just that rich with content and it demands close, repeat listens

The fact that an american artist's lyrics still flow just as perfectly when read by someone from the UK without the beat is a sign that it's just straight up excellent poetry.
Many don't know this but Rumplestiltskin likely spoke with an English accent in his formative years. It's just the pseudoephedrine he took to dry his boogers into a hardened paste form ripe for packaging caused his appetite to wane.
Year after year he grew thinner. An emaciated Rumplestiltskin eventually became so weak that his vocal cords couldn't enunciate with the strength an English accent required, the best he could muster up was something akin to Gilbert Gottfried. A sad but cautionary tale.
It's almost as if they speak the same language.

I feel a certain quandary in listening to Aes' music.
I so badly want him to be well. Be happy... content and relaxed.
But were that the case, we'd likely be denied the most moving, thought provoking and magical lyricism ever witnessed.
I think I would be satisfied with just listening to his back catalogue of genius if he suddenly became content and just faded into a happy, calm existence.
Love that guy.

I do think that there's a lot of truth in what you say. Only Aes knows for sure though.
He comes across as more irritated by the unimaginative fakery that people embellish themselves with in order to appear more than the sum of their parts when I listen to it.
I'll never forget when I heard the verse about black mollies dressed as piranhas...not even compelling melodrama.

@@varnull6120 I find that to be oddly not true. A lot of people get turned off at first because of level of writing and complexity. Some people don't like his voice, or style of music. I get that for sure but I think the majority is lost and doesn't get it.. When they do, that's when you're either all on board or you find yourself not attracted to it. Why? Got me....
He's such an anomaly within his writing style and sound.

Same dude, the opening verse to Get Out the Car Aes just feels so personal and actively *about* the grief I've lived through. Such is the strength of the dude's writing:

You have such an insightful way of analyzing different aspects of varying materials, it really blows my mind! I first came across Aesop Rock maybe two years ago now. Just utterly blew my mind, and hip-hop is not a genre I'm a big fan of. However, 'Get Out of the Car' was one of the most brutally honest sings I've ever heard, and made me NEED to hear more. And now I guess I'm a fan and slowly working through his stuff. Each song takes time to digest properly, which i think is what I like about him most.
Man, I love this. He is a genius, and I feel like the recognition will catch up eventually

Listening to Aes albums on loop for the past few days has inspired me to start taking notes to more fully understand his lyrics. I’ve noticed more occult ideas since watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Watching this video and Black(ish)’s video about The Smartest People has definitely highlighted Aes’s focus on the human condition. I’ve also been thinking a lot about Rabies since there’s a lot of homeless in my city… I think overall a part of me wants to feel the unorthodox, hard-to-label, or spiritual aspects of life. I appreciate that he so anti-establishment and seeks his own answers. A part of me wants to start exploring my reality and seek answers in my own way. I’ve always been closely aligned to the scientific way of viewing life, very skeptical of anything of this sort but he’s definitely pulled me into his world.

I was born in the same year as Aesop Rock and I have always been a long time man that supported gangsta rap, rap with sexy ass lyrics n deep beats. But when I heard Aesop Rock, that all changed. I'm old school so Em will always be a legend. Aesop Rock seems to be going thru the same shit as me and it makes it easier to relate to. Sobriety, mental health issues, anxiety around people. I got mad respect, Aesop Rock. Keep on keeping on.

I went out of my way to sign in off some incognito browsing just to upvote and to say THANK YOU for making this video. I'm sure there many dusty corners of the interwebs that praise Aesop for this or that, but I haven't heard anyone quite make the point you (and I, in my spare time, generally yelling at disinterested strangers) that Aesop is a high-art genius.
I've listened to his music faithfully for about a decade and a half and honestly every new song, ever worn out repeat: it always blows me away, refreshes me, and has saved my fucking sanity (and perhaps life) on more than a few occasions.
I am not one for celeb worship or fanfare that our society so fetishizes, but I genuinely feel like I owe Aesop more than I can describe.
Anyway, keep up the good work screaming into the cold, calculating YT void.

Oh my god dude thanks so much for taking the time to write all this (and for signing in to the cold YT void :p) Honestly I know exactly what you mean, I don't go in for celeb idolotry but in Aesop's case it's like watching a Van Gogh go by essentially under appreciated. I don't feel like I did Aesop enough justice with this video honestly so it's likely that there will be another video coming and SWFG would definitely feature prominently in that.

This was awesome. I'd like to hear some more of your breakdowns, esp of Aesop's stuff, but other people as well. Following the vein of under recognized talent, Denzel Curry would be an interesting artist to break down because he definitely shows patterns of Aes type creativity and skill - albeit in a different fashion.

That's cuz this is Hip Hop not Rap. If you like Aesop you should check out "Eyedea". He's dead now but he was brilliant. I'm an old school head and I couldn't stand rap either. Then I discovered Method Man's first album "Tikal" and I had the same epiphany as you did. Hip Hop is an amazing rabbit hole to explore. Alot of gems to be found in the underground.

I started listening to them when i was a teen like probably like 7 years ago and after loosing an extremely close friend 4 years ago get out the car has hit so much harder than it used to.
Should remake this with the albums that are out now. He's even better now!

For me, Garbology is Aes' best work yet. He's slowed down his delivery enough you can hear more of what he's saying, while he's focusing more on rich imagery, metaphors, unexpected rhymes, and layered pop culture references. He's playing with his own mythos and playing up this image of the hermetic 'weird guy' in the neighbourhood. I was never the biggest fan of his earlier work, and it's almost as if by trying not as hard to sound impressive, he's become all the more impressive in my eyes.
You got my favorite 2 artists off the bat : Saul and Aesop!!

First off, thanks for making this. I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I find it interesting that you chose to dissect those lines in particular. There's something about the cadence in the way he says those lines that always stuck out to me. He continues to impress and get better. This is what bothers me about atmosphere. After when life gives you lemons came out, everything has been mediocre at best. You figure artists would push each other to get better. Anyway you should do a video on his new album!

Aesop is far and above my favorite rapper. I still revisit old albums just to peel back layers of lyrics which reveal new meaning still resonating with me a decade later.

Keeping his Hyde Jekyllized is saying that the contraband HELPS his negative view, takes him out of view - not, as you say, being responsible for the negativity. His Hyde is the negativity, and the Jekyllisation is him being kept sane through the use of contraband.

As a lifelong Hip-Hop head, he is quite easily the goat. My personal favorite is Sean Price. I love K-Rino as a head from Houston, Kool Keith is insane. G Rap and Rakim laid out the blueprint, MF DOOM is probably number 2 but Aesop takes the cake easily for me.

Aesop is one of the best no doubt. I grew up in the 90's, and I got to say, the one rapper that really opened me up to lyricism was non other than Redcloud. Lyrics like, "Syllable assembly, empty lily pad soliloquys" and many many more opened the door for lyrical fulfillment, which led me to revisit Aesop, who is hit and miss for me, but that's just one man's opinion.

Aesop raps how I think it's soothing
Among the best, at the very east, to be sure. I miss him as part of The Weathermen too. That was some of the best rappers around right there, all as one. All good things seem eager to come to an end though. I mean I get it. No Camu, no Weathermen, for sure. I know I'm very far from alone on missing both. Damn, good things always eager to end/fall apart. The universe always eager to snatch away the people we value the most from us. Maybe it's better not to think about that last part too much, I'm not sure at the moment.

It is only a matter of time before Aes is recognized by the world. I think that the current rap state is degrading, and is on the verge of self destruction. With the exception of a few like K Dot, Kanye, we do not have any real lyricists and rappers in the mainstream. Commodification of rap, with selling sex, luxuries, gossips will soon be the very reason for its downfall. And once the golden age reappears, like it did decades ago, Aesop Rock will be legacy that everyone will strive to stand up to. Lupe Fiasco, and other mainstream rappers have been praising him recently, he's garnering the respect and appreciation he deserves. I hope Aesop gets everything he truly deserves in the world of music. Don't want him to meet the fate of Van Gough of not being appreciated for his art in time.
