New State of Matter Found

- Scientists have found evidence of a hidden state of matter that exists between solid and liquid. This new state, called "glassy liquid,” is found in amorphous solids, which are materials that lack the regular atomic structure of crystals. In a glassy liquid, the atoms are still arranged randomly, like in a liquid, but they are also less mobile, like in a solid. This gives the material some of the properties of both liquids and solids. The researchers found that, in the glassy liquid state, the atoms are able to move around more easily than in a solid, but they are still more restricted than in a liquid. This is an important discovery as it could also lead to the development of new materials with unique properties, such as materials that are more resistant to deformation or that have better thermal conductivity.

we need a video on the states of matter .
yes!
They are 4: solid, liquid, gas and plasma
@@DarkTheHunter They are four fundamental states.
But there's many non fundamental states. We would like to know them all in a video.

Jelly and marmalade are a gel and honey is a viscus liquid and curd is a non Newtonian fluid

Kinda different because that's proteins
@@HelloThere..... still made of atoms and there are more proteinless examples
It’s basically a liquid that’s had some water removed to make it more solid
Is the glassy liquid half full, half empty, or half baked?
This sounds like the more solid version of a non Newtonian fluid

So; we just now discovered viscosity?
Amazing!/s
Those were exactly my thoughts, but don't be surprised if some "actually 🤓" user replies to you with a thesis of a comment about how wrong you are that ultimately doesn't explain a thing.
Viscosity is not a state of matter. It is a descriptor of it. This new "state" is most commonly related to "Oobleck". Certain forces make the matter react appropriately. Not really a new matter, more like a weird half mixed state of solids and liquids.
"actually- 🤓" @@merrillsmith2270
"actually- 🤓" @@merrillsmith2270
If this is actually a thing, then it is has to be extremely difficult to maintain matter in this state as any amount of energy applied will send it into the liquid state.

Call it glass - known to be a liquid since antiquity.
We've tested this by melting ice on solid ground and in water. We can definitely see glassy liquid.
This has been known since the heating of matter.
There is a state of matter between liquid and gas called supercritical fluid.
I hate it when that happens.
Isn’t it what we call “semi-solid “? 🤔🤷♀️
Sometimes when working with a puddle of metal it will get shiny and its movement can be more predictable than when its full of porosity or bubbles.
I think I may have seen a liquid glassy state once. It was a lake that had frozen over for some time then been partly blown clear. So we were in a skiff trolling in open water alongside a5-6” shelf of ice. As the day started to close and chill the open water started to freeze in what appeared to be immense 20’ long ice crystals. Yet they were only millimeters thick, easily bending and moving with the ripples from our boat. We cut thru them but they simply reformed as soon as we went through. Very trippy experience.
That experience would have made a great video

I knew about this a long time ago, but no one ever asked me about it.
This has been known for a long time because old glass windows in cathedrals end up flowing downward due to gravity over a long time.
Actually one of the most likely uses for these kinds of materials is for shock-absorbing protection and building materials that have tensile and torsional strength with less rigidity.
I SNORTED when they said it was called ‘glassy liquid’ 😭
so jello and pudding
I am fairly smart and intellectual at heart …but when I see tech like this I just know and thank the universe for giving us the best and truly brilliant people who are quietly humbly indulging in their work, I’m truly fascinated with how smart they are 🎉❤😮
Glassy liquid is not considered a distinct state of matter. Instead, it is a state of amorphous solid, which means it lacks the ordered structure of a crystalline solid but still retains some characteristics of a solid, such as rigidity.
Sounds like the description of a triple state in matter. Both liquid gas and solid. A combination of pressure and temperature can achieve this for any element I believe.
Mix a little corn starch and water and the stuff behaves like he described. Flows like molasses, but feels solid when pressed.
ooh yeah we were taught about amorphous liquids in my science class, they're cool
It's described as a "glassy liquid", which to me means it is a liquid but with transitional properties. Transitional phases are just that: phases of matter, not states of matter. My question is can it be stabilized under certain pressures. I still think solid, liquid, gas, and plasma are the states of matter.
good, now i can properly classify my sauce when i thicken it
no its name is only liquid but they are not true solid thats why we call it glassy liquid but its not complete new state because there is so much restriction so they are still solids
Between liquid and a solid? So basically a laminar flow? A liquid flowing so clear that it looks solid.
It's called a non newtonion fluid...
Is this what matter Looks like in equilibrium between water and ice
It's literally glass, glass seems solid but he is literally describing it
I have discovered a new phase between walking and running. It’s called Wunning. I’m neither walking or running. I’m moving slowly as of walking, but yet fast as if running.
You can call it SLOW LIQUID as well.
Odd. Sounded like the description of glacial ice flowing.
I am subscribed as this is a very interesting subject!!
I think glass is like that. Amorphous solid. There are some naturally occurring minerals that fit also.
When I get an amorphous solid I reach for the pink bismuth.
Missed the opportunity to name it the lousquid state
This could really help with enduring the harshness of space travel when we perfect this knowledge.
Corn starch and water have entered the conversation…
Slime: finally, i have a name
Really this is a very nice video❤❤❤
wow, scientists just figured out jelly exist
Yeah cornstarch and a little water..
So glassy liquids can have both the properties of solids and liquids.
Fascinating.
This is pretty incredible!
Wow they rediscovered glass
I discovered this years ago after taking a bottle of water out of the freezer, turning it upside down and being left with slushy glass-liquid water. Where’s my credit?!
I'm naming it a Glasqa
This is also found in old grasses window, over the time period bottom of the window become thick .

That's... not a new discovery, they just decided to give it a name, now...
I thought this is a new space video 😅
Yeah, like the contents of Coca-cola bottle in the freezer. When You take it out from freezer, it's like the contents of coca-cola are still liquid, but when You open the bottle it's instantly freezed but not completely.
What is the capitol of this State?
Jell-o
This experiment cost millions of dollars in funding but someone like me who just has watched ice melt before knew this was already a thing.
Can someone give an example of Glassy Liquid?
Just add sugar and you've got the perfect material for making exotic memory metals for the hulls of future space ships
Slim! Call ghostbusters🙄
Wouldn’t that be the same thing as sleet or black ice?
Nope sleet is just a mix of rain and hail or partly frozen rain (the outside is frozen but the inside is still liquid) as soon as it hits anything it deforms and the very thin ice sheet shatters and instantly melts back into water
Black ice is just ice that doesn't reflect light in the direction your coming from most common on asphalt with a slope moving away from you most often but not the only place it happens
Is it possible that water memory is helping to aid in any of the configurations of the atoms and all these different states?
It's in superposition between liquid and solid state.
I thought it was slime because slime is solid and liquid
I feel like this also describes neurodivergence
Sheer Thining, it's been known for years.
T-1000: Very good. It’s only a matter of time.

I believe it’s been discovered long ago by 7-Eleven …it’s called a slushy 🥤

Thick paste, free'er than solid but tighter than liquid.
It is called liquid crystal which have the properties of both liquid and solid
