  • Yay, I'm not sick anymore! (Although there was a lot of throat clearing that I cut out lol). You guys voted and I watched. So here is "Jaws." The mayor though is just... ARGH!! And the special effects are not half bad for the 70s (although you can CLEARLY tell the shark is a puppet a lot of the time lol).

Actually Steven Spielberg has said that Pipit the dog may not have died.
“What’s possible is Pipit was not owned by the person who threw the stick. Pipit was a neighbor’s dog and Pipit decided he was tired of chasing the stick for as many times as it was thrown to him. He was hungry and ignored the stick in the water, swam home and had a very good dinner.”
If Spielberg says he went home that’s good enough for me lol

I always wanted a swimming pool in 1975. My mother told me to go swimming at the town beach. I was 9 years old back then. Well we went to see Jaws that summer. At the end of the movie my mother said "Honey you are getting a swimming pool!" Mom was the best. I lost her in 2011.

Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.

Also, the scene when they are examining Ben Gardner’s beat-up fishing boat, and Hooper pulls a shark tooth the size of a shot glass out of the hole in the hull -- just as Ben Gardner’s mutilated head suddenly appears -- is one of the greatest jump-scares of all time!

One of the few perfect films ever made. Interesting fact: other than the three leads, Chief’s wife, mayor and deputy the entire cast are non-actor locals. The coroner was the town coroner. The newspaperman was the writer of the script. Even the standout performance of Alex Kintner’s mother was a local high school teacher. This film achieved more with less.

The scene where Ben Gardner's head pops out of the hull breach was one of the best jump scares filmed at the time (until Jason popped out of the water in Friday the 13th). It was filmed in a swimming pool with milk poured in to make it look more hazy and was actually added for another scare by Spielberg....and boy did it scare the shit outta audiences in the theaters.

In the novel, you find out the Mayor had additional motivation to keep the beaches open: the mob had a lot of real estate in Amity, and were putting pressure on him to not close the beaches, which would keep their properties from losing value.
Good thing though was Brody was vindicated in the end. I think it was the newspaper editor that wrote a article that came clean about how it was all the conspiring public officials fault that the beaches were open and prevented Brody from taking action.

    1. Jaws was the first "Summer Blockbuster".
    2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
    7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish".
    8. To me the best scene framing work was the pullback to the vandalized Welcome sign.
    9. Movie magic: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the Indianapolis story. It' personal.
    11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
    12. Aside from the pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea,
    13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son.
15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.
NOTE: The book has a back story where the town is under the thumb of "the mob", explaining the money situation. It's left out of this adaptation. The project was already running over time and budget, so it was left out.

So, fun fact is that Spielberg wanted to show the shark more, but the mechanical shark kept breaking down so he elected to use the camera more for the shark POV. Which, worked better to build up things, and of course John Williams' amazing score.
Another fun fact, Spielberg named the shark Bruce after his lawyer. Hence Finding Nemo, the great white is named Bruce. :D Also, great whites are known to get about 20 feet long. So yeah, big bois!!!!!!

Patrick H Willems did a deep dive video on that. Apparently that's more legend than anything.. a quote used to promote the movie but doesnt hold up when look at the storyboards, script, schooting schedule. It was more that the editor chose to hide the shark as much as possible because it "looked stupid"

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The shark was hidden by design early on. The beach attack scenes were filmed in May and June 1974 but the shark was never scheduled to be used for any scenes until July when filming moved out to sea for the Orca based scenes. That's where it went wrong.
Bruce could never have been used in the 3ft to 4ft shallow water where they filmed the beach scenes so it was never planned to be used.
Spielberg was already a suspense director, as Duel and Something Evil shows. He didn't want it to be just a monster movie with everything on show right away.

Every younger reactor I’ve seen watch this movie always asks why Chief Brody has 2 phones at his house. It’s because there are 2 separate phone lines, each with its own number. One is for the personal calls of the family the other is for business calls for Chief Brody.
Before cell phones & voicemail, when everyone had land lines, most emergency personnel had a separate line & phone for business calls. If there was an emergency & they needed to get hold of the police or fire chief when he was home they didn’t want the family tying up the phone line. Imagine there’s a terrible car crash & calling the police chief who’s off duty & getting a busy signal because the teenager has been talking on the phone for the past hour.

There is a good example of foreshadowing in this movie that everyone seems to miss: when Chief Brody is looking through books about sharks, researching the subject, while thumbing through the books, he comes across a photo of a giant shark with a compressed air tank from a diver in its mouth. Of course, this comes full circle at the end of the movie when Brody destroys the shark by shooting the compressed air tank in its jaws. I am always surprised that no one ever points that out; it seems like such an obvious oversight to me…

Both the “Jaws” novel and the movie were inspired by a series of deadly shark attacks along the Jersey shore over a short period of time, resulting in multiple fatalities, all of which were caused by a single rogue bull shark. In short, incidents like those portrayed in Jaws do indeed take place in real life. Check the shark attack records for Florida, Australia, and California for more evidence.

The oceanographer seem familiar to you? Sure. That's just Richard Dreyfuss. Big Hollywood star. Known for his roles in movies such as Stakeout, Another Stakeout, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Jaws, What About Bob?, etc, etc. -OG

Glad to hear you’re doing better.
$3k in 1975 is almost $17,500 today. That’s not bad.
Quint destroyed the radio because he’s gone full Ahab. Wants the kill for himself
I mean it is a beach. Going in the water is part of the whole thing. Doesn’t look good when no one is partaking. You don’t want people coming to a carnival and not getting on the rides

Mrs. Kintner musr not have been at the town meeting, is my guess. Otherwise, she would have probably figured out that sheriff Brody was coerced into reopening the beaches after the 24-hour period. At least then Brody wouldn't have gotten slapped.

The original scenes for the little boy and the Estuary victim's death were much worse , but we're changed in the final cut and slightly toned down. Still my favourite film of all time.⚓🦈🦈

Glad to see you well and getting back into the groove, Kay.. 'Jaws' is one of my favorite films growing up. I had the soundtrack on vinyl and played it constantly. I was able to go to Universal Studios when the film opened in '74 and see a life-sized mock-up of the mechanical shark they used. I wish I still had my pictures of it.

Quint makes reference to 'The Worst Shark Attack in History'. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis is torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sinks within minutes in shark-infested waters. Only 316 of the 1,196 men on board survived. Survivors were in the water for 4 days & 5 nights, subject to exhaustion, dehydration & regular shark attacks.

You should add in that an SOS was sent but the three (?) radio listening posts that received the radio message ignored it either because of their immediate commanders standing order or thinking it was a Japanese trick.
The Navy hid this because the operations of the listening posts were classified.
It didn't come out to the public until a highschooler discovered the info for a report after it was declassified.

Bruce the great white shark of these film is not an evil creature. His eyes were so kind. An animal of its size can`t survive eating only 5 people and a dog. He ate mostly fish, seals and other sea creatures; sadly he was a little gluttonous so he did enjoy eating a human being here and there.

My favourite movie i was 11 when it came out. Back in the day when they could tell a story and not rely on cgi to wow audiences. Today with have too much cgi which gets boring.

Sharks don't really act like this. I ADORE this film, but it's led to SO MANY unnecessary shark deaths. If you want to see the exact same scenario by Spielberg, watch Duel. It's amazing, and VERY believable. In that scenario, the shark is a person

Hooper was originally going to die (just like in the book where both him and Quint were killed by the shark).
However, while filming the underwater footage, a random shark accidentally got stuck in the cage's cables (it fortunately got freed when the cables broke). Because it was such a cool shot (but there was no one in the cage), Spielberg just changed the script and had Hooper survive to the end.
The book, while exceptional with its action scenes, was pretty trashy; the mayor was in debt to the mob and Brody had to deal with even more jerks interfering with him keeping the public safe (to the point of Brody's pet cat getting slaughtered in protest) and most of the characters were pretty trashy and unlikable people
While the novel was a success, its author Peter Benchley felt guilty as sharks were nearly hunted to extinction in the decades following his book and the movie's success (many shark species are still endangered today). Until his death, along with writing more novels, Benchley largely wrote articles for National Geographic and other magazines educating the public about conservation and protecting sharks and other endangered sea animals.
