Portree, the main town on the Isle of Skye, is a bustling port and a thriving cultural centre.
Set round its natural harbour and fringed by high ground and cliffs, the town is a popular tourists’ holiday destination and the harbour continues to be used by fishing boats as well as pleasure craft. It boasts excellent leisure facilities including a swimming pool, pony-trekking and boat cruises plus plenty of shopping opportunities in addition to the great variety of accommodation ranging from upmarket hotels through guest houses, B&Bs, self-catering establishments and hostels. There is also a campsite nearby.
Portree is also the cultural hub for Skye and one of its main attractions, the award-winning Aros Centre, runs regular theatre, concerts and film screenings.
The town is a popular base for exploring the rest of the island. Many visitors are drawn to the spectacular scenery of the Trotternish Ridge to the north as this wild area is dominated by weird and wonderful at the same time rock formations such as the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the truly extraordinary pinnacles of the Quaraing.

Interesting. I spent most of 1964 in Portree - work assignment - and really enjoyed it. Obviously many changes - car parks, apartments, shops but some things the same - many a night checking out the Bells in the Portree Hotel. The rain is missing in your video. Not so sure I would want to go back and have to share it with all those bored looking tourists. It was rather a special place then as was the whole of Skye.

Brought back memories of the many times I've been there. Pro tip, If you go there for the Sea Eagle trips book a morning trip.
Pity you ended the walk where you did, just up the road from there is the restaurant run by the son of a certain Donny Munro.

I get it. I also live in a tourist destination. Too much tourism tends to ruin the places so that the reason for their appeal disappears. Sorry about the snide comments you received from some. Hello from Canada’s west coast. Ironically I would love to visit Scotland as my grandmother was from Edinburgh. I think the best idea is to visit places off the beaten path with little to no traditional tourist appeal. Small towns with real people and culture.
Would love to hang out and hear some Scottish folk music. I recently discovered Archie Fisher thanks to Spotify and have been listening to Scottish folk since then.

I live in big bear California. It’s the same here. If we didn’t have tourism we could not live here and now we can’t afford to live here because of the tourist.
