. . . i always ignore these bands and their new albums until i watch them preform here. Suddenly I am truly introduced to their amazing sounds. Thank You KCRW for showing us all what we miss when we dismiss them without giving them a real listen
I am speechless. This is off the charts brilliant. I have no idea what this song is about but the emotions of this song are palpable staight to the heart.
The line before it says: "I was standing in the street cause I was trying not to crack" This song is about the end of a relationship. In this line he's saying that he is trying not to crack/fall apart because of the relationship ending. The next verse is about self-affirmation, he's built himself up from the fractured version that he was at the end of the relationship. "I was solid gold" Gold is extremely ductile - meaning that it can be drawn out into wire or threadlike forms without becoming brittle and breaking. By saying "I was solid gold" he is explicitly stating that he can no longer crack/fall apart. He has moved on from the broken relationship and he is now solid gold, not weak and fractured like before when he was "trying not to crack."
Ugh, Great song and band.. awful sounding drink though... cups vanilla ice cream 2 tablespoons white crème de cacao 2 tablespoons crème de noyaux 1 tablespoon vanilla vodka 1/2 cup Trix™ cereal
"It wasn't like rain
it was more like a sea
I didn't ask for this pain it just came over me..."
That's poetry. I know this life.
Wow. Stunning performance by the best American band right now.
I didn’t know I liked the nationals until I heard this song. It resonates so deeply with me.
I officially became a fan of the national when they performed this song on the tiny desk

I think of all the live-in-studio videos I've watched of this band, this one has the best vocal mix.
Their tiny desk concert is just as perfect

Music at the end ruins all the magic.
Meh, this version lacks atmosphere and unity. Watch the NPR Tony Desk Concert for a better intimate version.
