Composting: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

  • Composting is an eco-friendly process that transforms organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. It involves the natural decomposition of organic materials, such as leaves, vegetable scraps, and yard waste. This process not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills but also improves soil health and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. When composting, it's essential to balance 'greens' like vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, and fresh grass clippings, with 'browns' such as dry leaves, straw, and wood chips. However, you should avoid composting meat, dairy, oils, diseased plants, and pet wastes, as they can create odors or attract pests.
The composting process requires maintaining the right moisture level and regularly turning the pile to introduce oxygen, which speeds up decomposition. This can be done in a compost bin, which can either be purchased or homemade, and helps contain the compost while facilitating the process. The time it takes for compost to be ready can vary, ranging from a few months to a year, depending on factors like the balance of materials, weather, and maintenance. Once ready, compost can be mixed into garden soil or used as mulch, providing an excellent way to enrich the soil naturally. Composting is not only beneficial for the environment but also for your garden, promoting healthier plant growth. Have you had any experience with composting, or is it something you're considering trying?

Ooo, boy, i love that illustration: commercial fertilizers are like junk food for your plants whilst compost (especially diy) is like a home cooked well balanced meal. Excellent

Nice video... but I want more... hot pile vs bokashi vs vermiculture vs johnson-su vs cut and drop vs mushroom compost vs pit composting. You seem to know your stuff so maybe we could have a deep dive on each of the above?

Can you please tell me why my compost always have maggots

Maggots in compost usually come from flies laying eggs on organic waste, especially when there's a lot of kitchen scraps like meat or sugary foods. They're attracted to the smell and find it a good spot for their larvae to feed and grow. Keeping the compost well-balanced with a mix of greens and browns, covering fresh scraps with soil or dry leaves, and ensuring the pile has good aeration can help prevent them.

Your putting meat and grease in it which attract flies which breed maggots .

what is the life tine of worm how long do each worm live? turning around backyard compost may kill the worms so should we rather avoid turning compost? how to easily take away bottom portion of compost? what should we do with left over worms once its fully done? should normal pot or garden soil have worms if we don't really have waste nearby?
