Accepting Spiderman 2 but not Cyberpunk is insane. Cyberpunk has the literal same structure of a GTA game. Even down to getting missions on your phone. And then for Greg to come out with Lego Batman and all the stuff it has which is also in Cyberpunk. Like come one. Justice for Blessing.
It absolutely was described as a GTA clone back in the day if you were talking about the game. It was originally how people described essentially an open sandbox game. “It’s like GTA 3/San Andreas”. Edit: worth noting I don’t agree with some of the calls in this one. My criteria isn’t as strict as others seemingly.
@gumgumleobazooka you also had a lot less games back then and certainly a lot less open world sandbox games. Sure, it could've been a GTA clone twenty years ago, but I don't think it fits that description in 2024. I will say that NOT allowing Cyberpunk is much more egregious than allowing Spider-Man for sure lol.
Bless got absolutely hosed with cyberpunk. It is 100% a GTA clone. Ask Tim Rogers. You steal cars. There's a wanted system. The point Greg makes is way off.
Two of my favorites that y'all didn't talk about: 1. Gun (it was GTA but western 5 years before RDR) 2. Godfather The Game (GTA but the story is the first Godfather movie)
"The genre popularized by the 2001 title GTA 3 where players are given the ability to drive any vehicle or fire any weapon as they explore an open world, noted for frequently bearing strong violent or criminal themes" But somehow Cyberpunk isn't that because it has skill trees
The Spider-Man 2 one is ridiculous. If that’s a GTA clone then every open world game is a GTA clone. For me it has to be Open world Most vehicles are drivable Can commit crimes
Spiderman 2 was absolutely considered a Spider-man clone at the time. I lived through this era and GTA III was a cultural phenomenon. It isn't just the open world and traversal it is about the DNA. Down to the round mini map with objective markers everywhere and missions. That wasn't a thing before GTA (including the PS1 titles) popularized it. As a kid during that time, the phrase we all threw around was "you can go anywhere and do ANYTHING you want!" And while that didn't include crime, the freedom was still built into it's DNA. And it was also the first 3DvSpider-Man game where you could see the street/touch the ground. And I don't think they would have implemented that if not for GTA. So yes it absolutely was trying to cash in on the craze. My favorite clones from that time were True Crime: Streets of LA and a western game called Gun which was better than Red Dead Revolver (not redemption)
Barrett was the only one making sense with Spiderman 2, that was an absolutely insane take from Blessing, and Greg is worse for encouraging him. Sure the dev said they ripped off elements of GTA - this was the early 00s when these sort of open world games were in their infancy, they were probably just referring to this major part they took inspiration from. But play both games and anybody sane will tell you that Spiderman 2 isn't a "GTA clone"
I was originally listening to this on Apple podcast but I had to come here to say two things. 1. I was sitting here waiting for anyone to say cyberpunk and the fact that it got vetoed immediately is absolutely insane. Blessing should have fought a lot harder for that. 2. We could remember wheelman (which I absolutely wanna give props for) but no one bringing up mercenaries 2 is wild.
No mention of "The Getaway"? The British, gritty GTA3? That game was a moment in time. Everyone was salivating over those impossibly high quality screenshots. That game might have also started the trend of minimalistic UI. I didn't love it and I don't think it's the best, but it should be in the conversation at least.
I feel like an insane person, is CP2077 really not a GTA clone? I really cannot see an argument for that. If you play GTA5 in 1st person its nearly the same game.
Absolutely an insane person lol. Comparing GTA to any real first person game just because GTA has a first person camera is definitely crazy. If you really can’t feel the difference between GTA’s jank and literally anything else, that definitely says a lot about your discernment.
@wyrmslayer1991 also dont know how you got me comparing Cyberpunk to GTA JUST BECAUSE of first person. If my discernment is in question, your reading comprehension is inarguably bad.
It's really not the same game at all? Cyberpunk is a story driven RPG. It has a vast amount of dialogue choices, a skill system, a combat system that involves much more depth than just choosing a weapon on a wheel. GTA is a crime sandbox game where you at most make 2-3 diverging story choices. Is Cyberpunk similar to Saints Row or Mafia as well in your opinion? Just look at the launch state of the wanted system in Cyberpunk. It was not at all designed for you to treat the game as a crime sim. Cops spawned behind you, they didn't engage in actual chases, & killing of civilians is more of a personal choice of gameplay rather than an result of how the game is designed like I would consider GTA is. They updated the game due to the amount of post launch complaints saying it wasn't "cyberpunk GTA" when that was never how it was presented. People saw a city + guns and wanted it to be that game.
@RedSpy47 to me, all of the RPG elements you included in that first part are improvements and I could easily see most of it included in GTA6. They are of course beyond GTA5, and of course Cyberpunk is not a GTA clone in the same way that Saints is. But I think the core of it, sandbox world focused around a city with a heavy emphasis on vehicles, a story focused on criminal enterprise, doing missions involving driving and gunfights, make it a GTA clone for the sake of something like this podcast. I also think your note on the police spawns is irrelevant. That was poor programming due to releasing an unfinished game that they have since corrected, it was not intended to be a feature of the game and cops were always meant to chase you. The game was not updated because people complained about it not being cyperbunk GTA. It was updated because it was an unfinished game released to meet an arbitrary deadline.
After listening to the arguments I agree Spider-man 2 on PS2 was definitely a GTA clone, since really we're talking about games that were directly inspired by GTA3. That said so is Cyberpunk
In general I wouldn't call cyberpunk a GTA clone, but in this context, with the other ones that were allowed, I think it's close enough - relative to Spiderman 2 and Lego Batman haha
Cyberpunk 2077 has a wanted system, radio, grand theft auto..., different weapons, vehicles, crime. Spider-man 2 has... nothing. The only similarities Spider-man 2 shares with GTA is that it's open world.
Kinda Funny doing a reacts series to different famous music they haven't listened to would be a good time I think. As for whats a GTA clone I think it should just be open world games that are on the ground and have driving in them and as a major mechanic of traversal.
How tf is Spiderman a GTA clone? Just because the devs said it served as an inspiration? No guns/no vehicles to hijack. Just because it’s an open sandbox does not qualify for it. Disappointed in that pick blessing (great episode btw)
Blessing was robbed. Cyberpunk2077 should absolutely be on the list. It is way closer to a GTA than a Fallout. There's even carjacking, and a five-star wanted meter.
Seeing how many people here think Cyberpunk is a GTA clone -- the slander that game had at launch (minus the bugs) makes so much more sense, I guess if you see that and think its a sandbox game then of course youd be mad when it clearly isnt lol.
Yep, this has been enlightening. They have several similar gameplay ideas and a narrative focus on urban crime. But they also have very different "bones" and come from entirely different lineage of game genres. Of course, modern games and genres have been blurring together, with rpg-elements and such. I guess i can understand young players expecting every game to be an open-world action-adventure-rpg sandbox.
I personally think the definition is more nuanced than simply “you steal cars and shoot people and the cops come after you” To me, the spirit of a GTA clone is intention. The game was made with the intention that “hey, if you like GTA, you’ll like this!” And in that regard, I can’t see how Cyberpunk could be considered a GTA clone. You can’t take somebody who has only ever played GTA games, give them Cyberpunk, and expect them to have a similar experience. GTA (and most rockstar games) are about a simple, straightforward experience with very little player choice beyond “what color did you want that in?” Every mission in GTA consists of a cutscene, a car ride with dialogue, and a shooting gallery. GTA games are about soaking in a crazy detailed environment with a very basic but well written and directed story. The moment you start trying for anything more than that, you aren’t making a GTA clone anymore. The basic, straightforward nature of the gameplay is a massive aspect of what makes GTA games and their clones what they are. Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are much more in line with GTA than Cyberpunk.
10:24 Wow kinda disappointed that the Bois are supporting the Mr beast stuff after all that's come out about him. Very disappointing from the KF fam. 😥😞
There's a strong divide between Saints Row 1&2 vs 3&4 people. And the reboot tried to Hello Fellow Kids younger people with a half broken game that unites the 4 houses with disappointment and annoyance.
Reading the comments here just immediately turned me off of watching the video. Just another excuse to include goddam Spderman in everything. But apparently Cyberpunk isn’t a GTA clone? Lol, what a joke!
my list would have been the same as bless but mafia 2 instead of spiderman and Cyberpunk is a 100% a GTA clone like what else would a gta set in a futuristic timeline look like.to me thats cyberpunk. also no far cry on this list is surprising
My thoughts exactly
Some strange picks in there, would've gone to more straightforward clones like 'the saboteur', 'the godfather' or even 'The Getaway'
Spider-Man 2 being a GTA clone is insane. You don't do crimes, you don't pick up guns, you don't drive vehicles... It's not even close. Great vid tho!
Technically you're an unlicensed vigilante beating people up so Spider-man is a criminal doing crimes lol. He's a menace!
@LowSkillPlays Found J. Jonah Jameson's alt.
It absolutely was described as a GTA clone back in the day if you were talking about the game. It was originally how people described essentially an open sandbox game. “It’s like GTA 3/San Andreas”.

@@StillChewyyea definitely a head scratcher on some of those decisions haha. Fair point though on the ever evolving definition.
Spider-man 2 is okay, but Cyberpunk isn't... what are we doing here?
No way in hell is Spider-Man 2 a GTA clone 😂 Mike definitely won this
not gonna lie when he first said it my mind went to new one 😂
Justice for Cyberpunk 2077 !!! But of course spiderman 2 gets in -.-
Cyberpunk 2077 does pretty much anything a gta does but because it introduces MORE means its not a clone???
Bless got absolutely hosed with cyberpunk. It is 100% a GTA clone. Ask Tim Rogers. You steal cars. There's a wanted system. The point Greg makes is way off.
Two of my favorites that y'all didn't talk about:
1. Gun (it was GTA but western 5 years before RDR)

For Bless to question Crackdown and Bully, but chose Spider-Man 2 is crazy.
"The genre popularized by the 2001 title GTA 3 where players are given the ability to drive any vehicle or fire any weapon as they explore an open world, noted for frequently bearing strong violent or criminal themes"
But somehow Cyberpunk isn't that because it has skill trees
Shout out to the PlayStation Classic "The Getaway"
Being able to regenerate health while in cover was a game changer.
not only that, he leans in. takes a deep breath and it begins hhah
The Spider-Man 2 one is ridiculous. If that’s a GTA clone then every open world game is a GTA clone.
For me it has to be
Open world
Most vehicles are drivable
Can commit crimes
Blessing questioning Bully while picking Spider-Man 2 is CRAZY lol.
Sleeping Dogs is my favorite one. Such a shame what happen to the devs.
Crazy how they didn't recommend the best Tiny Desk, Mac Miller
There’s no way bless drafted spider man but wants to veto crackdown. THIS EPISODE IS MAKING ME GO INSANE
Bless totally could've sawed his foot off to get out of the Cyberpunk trap, but didn't want it bad enough
Crazy that Barrett had to explain how bully was a gta clone
Nobody has brought up LA Noire, that should 100% be on the list!
Mike brought it up at the beginning
they didnt pick the godfather games wild
Yes! What a game!
How did no one pick The Getaway?
Exactly what I thought. Insane
Nine Inch Nails is doing the soundtrack for the next Tron movie
If we are including rockstar games the list should be:
1. Red dead 2
2. Saints row 2
3. True crime streets of LA
4. Mafia 2
Spiderman 2 was absolutely considered a Spider-man clone at the time. I lived through this era and GTA III was a cultural phenomenon. It isn't just the open world and traversal it is about the DNA. For me it has to be:
Able to use multiple weapons
Able to drive multiple vehicles
Open world
Missions
Wanted System
Not being allowed to play GTA as a kid, I got my fix from Spiderman 2 and Jak 2.
Jak 2 (and 3?) were great! 100% a clone but with a fun IP/platformer wrapping
Commenting after everybodys first pick, and someone HAS to pick Scarface right? one of the best GTA clones ever, imo.
I was originally listening to this on Apple podcast but I had to come here to say two things.

2. We could remember wheelman (which I absolutely wanna give props for) but no one bringing up mercenaries 2 is wild.
Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a GTA clone. You can hijack cars and there are radio stations. Blessing was robbed…
How have we not had a Kinda Funny ranks GTA games?
No mention of "The Getaway"? The British, gritty GTA3? That game was a moment in time. Everyone was salivating over those impossibly high quality screenshots. Love this episode! Would love if you guys can do more fun topics like this!!
Anyone who played The Getaway, knows that’s the winner
lmfao the way blessing looked at the cam while watching the video
Y’all are sleeping on Goat Simulator 3!
Man that Spider man 2 pick really hurt Bless instead of helping.
After listening to the arguments I agree Spider-man 2 on PS2 was definitely a GTA clone, since really we're talking about games that were directly inspired by GTA3. That said so is Cyberpunk
I’m in the original Saints Row. I’m the voice on KRhyme FM. Eddie Francis. They never asked me back for the sequels 😢

Correction: You can drive in Bully, theres a scooter you can drive
I hope you guys do this for Soulslikes eventually because the debates over if a game is a "Soulslike" would be legendary lmao (God of War 2018)
I’m surprised Sleeping Dogs wasn’t mentioned in Round1 but Vin Diesel Game and also the 50 Cent Game are both great contenders
In general I wouldn't call cyberpunk a GTA clone, but in this context, with the other ones that were allowed, I think it's close enough - relative to Spiderman 2 and Lego Batman haha
Mike was the only one with 4 games that were actual gta clones not made by rockstar. Of course he won
Cyberpunk 2077 has a wanted system, radio, grand theft auto..., different weapons, vehicles, crime.
Spider-man 2 has... nothing. The only similarities Spider-man 2 shares with GTA is that it's open world.

Black Hole Sun's music video would be a good react lol
I would have put Cyberpunk 2077 as a GTA Clone.
Mike had the best list
I haven’t watched yet but saints row 2 is the only answer. I better not be let down
Edit: dammit Mike you fumbled the bag first round
I can’t believe the Getaway or Getaway 2 were not picked…
Cyberpunk should have counted the robbed bless again
You all missed out by not picking The Godfather game!
How tf is Spiderman a GTA clone? Just because the devs said it served as an inspiration? No guns/no vehicles to hijack. Just because it’s an open sandbox does not qualify for it. Disappointed in that pick blessing (great episode btw)
Cyberpunk 100% should count
The Getaway, Driver 3.
Blessing was robbed. Cyberpunk2077 should absolutely be on the list. It is way closer to a GTA than a Fallout. There's even carjacking, and a five-star wanted meter.
Crazy that they didn’t put The Godfather on their list
Bless hasn’t finished RDR 2 😱
I can’t believe yall forgot about the godfather series
I would’ve let Bless have Cyberpunk and not Spider-Man.

If Cyberpunk isn't a GTA derivative, i guess I don't like GTA games. The story and mechanics are all mostly linear with slight deviation.
