    Sorry Ali I saw that coming! I kinda knew the barrels would shift!🤣 made the same mistake myself... awesome on the dock build, will make fishing a lot more fun... 👍🙏💥🎉🎊 I was just looking, can you make a wooden spill gate for the pipe? The thought was, a gate you can slid up and down to control the level!

      Don't mess with a pond that's working. Raising the water level in that pond may make it prone to flooding/flowing over the bank or spillway.

    Two things : 1)- why didn't you put any rebar in those footings and 2) You know you can fill those drums with packing peanuts, It's a cheaper way for great flotation than filling with foam.

    If you want a deeper larger pond, good reason to proceed. Might consider adding a step down from the pilings to the walk way. If any of your family or friends visiting have any physical challenges you could ramp the transition vs step down to give access to all. Pond seems pretty happy at it's level...sometimes simple ideas like an extra foot of water opens up flood gates (no pun intended) :D not a homesteader, but enjoy all your family shares about your journey. God bless all of you as you transition one one home to the next....Jim

    DO NOT CHANGE THE POND that is working so well, wait a year or so to see what the pond does from spring-summer-fall-winter.
    When you build your other docks use 2 barrels on the end. That way if the single barrel gets a crack in it the dock will still float???
    You should be building a temporary shelter for your tractor & equipment now not docks!
    Check out VW family farm they built a huge open-air building that could work for Al until he moves on the new land!

    One piece of advise on the equipment that has hydraulic cylinders. Try to leave the cylinder ram retracted as far as you can to keep them protected from the weather. Even though the rods are hard chromed, they can still rust and that will destroy the seals and cause hydraulic leaks which can be expensive to repair or replace.

    • @sonnyblack9905
      @sonnyblack9905 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yep totally agree on this i was a hydraulic repairman for 40+ years with the Government, changed many a set of seals due to the rams corroding. when you grease you unit put a light coat of grease on the cylinders this will help protect them.

    Why do you park your trailer so faraway from the work seems less to carry so faraway from the build. Carrying 60lb bags of concrete would be easier if closer as well as wet pressure treated lumber. Just thinkin of the strain on yourself. Now you need to build another the same as the first to make a T. By makin a t the dock willb more stabil and less bouncy So Gina doesn't freak out.

    Won’t the chemicals in the pressure-treated pollute the water?

    • @markpashia7067
      @markpashia7067 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Once the whole thing is built with the proper number of floats, the lumber will not contact the water and any bleed from rain contact will be greatly reduced after it sun dries for a month or so. The amount diluted over that size pond will be part per trillion and well within safety guidelines. Once it sun dries for a month or two, I would coat it with a product like Thompson's Water Seal to avoid skin contact with the lumber myself as that is a proven food grade coating with good traction even when wet. Just flood coat it as you cannot do two coats. It is hydrophobic and won't take a second coat. Nothing else works like Thompson's so do not be fooled by others. Once coated you can lay out to your hearts content and not worry about skin contact with poisons. Even if you are not into sunning, climbing onto it from swimming or sitting on the edge with feet in water will mean skin contact with treated wood, so coating stops the risk. Other stain/sealers do not have the same properties and are often slippery when wet. They also are usually not food grade rated so have their own issues. Last thing you want is a slippery dock!!!

  • @nanigoose
    @nanigoose 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I agree with other viewers to not raise the water level of the pond. It's best to work with the natural level than to change what's already been established.

    Don't recommend raising the water level, you will have multiple consequences to fix as a result.
    I would also change the walkway float in two ways, add a second barrel and a couple of feet in length. Both of these can be accomplished easily at the float end with a doubler passing your existing float a couple of feet or more.
    I would set the end as you planned on your piers, this will allow movement do to any water level change and easier weed control at that end.

    The purpose of a floating dock, is so it can rise and fall with the level of the water. You should have embedded large eye bolts in the concrete and connected the dock to them with heavy chains. And stop cutting up all your wood to exact sizes only cut what you have to the wood could have hung over the sides of the frame why waste the wood it also didn't have to be exactly 8' or 4 ' and build it wide enough to be more stable use barrels on both sides width wise and make it wider it will be more comfortable to use. you don't have to take my word for it look up building a floating dock on the internet and build more than 1 segment and connect them with chains loosely so as not to be too rigid. You can also buy and build floating docks sturdy enough to tie a boat up to.

      Old news. This is not the old treated lumber from years ago that leached arsenic. Also this will not be in contact with the water once it is floated properly. This is just the walkway to get to the float dock still to be built and Al was playing around in this video to scare Gina and have some fun. You will understand once all is built and installed properly.

    • @markpashia7067
      @markpashia7067 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StoneKathryn No one is perfectly sure about the new treated as it has not been in use long enough, but in this case with no direct contact with the water and the size of that pond, it would be very unlikely to have any chemical get to parts per billion much less parts per million where most of the limits are set. All bets are off if it had treated posts underwater, but this will float with all wood out of the water when done. I am more concerned about the treated wood and human skin contact as people are kind of careless about washing hands before touching mouth or face. I would seal the top and side surfaces with Thompson's Water Seal for that reason as it is food grade surface sealing in the poisons and also a very good traction surface when wet unlike regular stains and sealers that can be very slippery for wet feet. Thompson's was the only treatment cleared for sealing the old treated lumber for food areas like picnic tables.

      Al, when I lived in NJ, I used to repair the docks at my marina. We found that barrels weren’t stable enough. We used styrofoam that measured about 10”x10” and I think they were about 8-10 feet long. Since they were flat, the docks were pretty sturdy. I’m guessing that you will start the house maybe next year? If you lived down here, you’d have beautiful weather all year long. I sometimes miss the 4 seasons.
