    Put a screen or grate over the end of the overflow to keep critters from crawling up in the pipe, falling into the tank and drowning.

    Well Al, you have several very valid suggestions regarding your water tank and piping. I agree with most all of them. Especially the movement of soil with your seasonal temp shifts. Good job and it should be interesting to see just how effective it is at providing gravity fed water to the two faucets.

    Great project and crew. Remember that nothing is a failure if it teaches you a lessen. The IBC tote might have worked it you re-enforced the cage with plywood or planks but I think the the new tank is a huge upgrade that you will be very happy with. As a homestead site I am sure that you will find a ton of uses for that container. The simplicity of the process is pure genius. Now, you just need to install a mini water power generator at the bottom of the hill to generate electricity as well and you are all set. I love to play in water so I think I would be making you collection pool a little bigger and making it a mini spinning hole and who does like playing with rocks and making your own dam. A few rocks at you overflow site and it’s a great place to have your little garden paradise. Thanks for sharing and glad to see some of your extended family.

    Looking great!! Just like one other person mentioned…put a grate on the end of your outflow to prevent unwanted critters from going in and drowning could prove devastating to any who drink from it and could take a long to identify as the source. Wishing you the very best !! Also before you cover over much more of your piping id be certain it works from end to end! Could save a lot of time re-digging otherwise. Peace and blessings to you and your lovely family.🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦

    Gooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia ,
    Al , I would say that you are beyond the IBC tote level now. Now you are into the tank level. Wow ! It sure seemed to fill up fast !
    You have a few flowing brooks and creeks. With ram pumps you could have water lines going every where on your farm and not just to the homestead area. Running water at the cabin ? If you do not trust the water , you could always boil it for 15 minutes. And then put the water into storage containers for drinking.

    Gooood Morning, Al, Gina, and Olivia. And to my TH-cam friends. My thoughts on this project, would be to add some kind of heating element within the tank it self so that when the temperature drops below freezing, it would automatically go on. Although that is a large water storage unit, due to possibility of bad years of draught, like western United States, I would have purchased double that size tank. Too many things going on with our weather patterns. At this point, perhaps yet another system at another location on the property would give you extra security. Especially since you have more streams you can access. G-D Bless

  • @ranrus52
    @ranrus52 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a few thoughts for winter. Build the collecting area up with more stone, so in winter you can throw a pallet or something over the source and blanket the area and the top of the cistern with straw to insulate it, but that you can remove in spring. Fence the area off around the source area and a bit up the spring creek to stop animals getting too close. Keep up the good work :)

    We distill our well water and run it through an activated charcoal filter before consuming it or giving it to our animals as a precaution. You might consider using a tbsp of vinegar in your animal water to keep any parasites and bacteria down. It’s super easy to make. It’s really simple to do. When we change our chickens’ water we just put a cap full in the waterer (we use hanging waterers with nipples so the water stays clean in the coop) and swish it about to clean the sides and bottom, dump it out, then fill with clean water.

    Well I'm not a skeptic but am on this one and going to learn something new. Water is self-leveling and one of the best ways to get elevation across land is with water in a hose. In my estimation when your tank is full that is as far as the water will rise in your hydrants unless the tank is higher than your hydrants or you have pressure of some sort on the water. I'm watching with an anxiousness to learn something... 😆

    The danger aof backfilling all at once is that the compacting can shear off a pipe if it is through a sharp hole. Of forcing a clamp to come off. The safe way is to backfill up to the pipe and as it compacts (over days or weeks) the gradual tempo will minimize stress on pipes and fittings

    IBC totes are good for a lot of things but not to be buried and if you are going to use them for a water source for the animals you might want to paint them black or cover them with a dark tarp because they will start to grow algae in them. Great job with the off grid water system should be a great backup plan for the future.

    FYI you have to fill the IBC before burying it. It's an opposing pressure issue you had. Always plumb fill then bury. That way it's easier to fix messes and helps hold things in place while you are finishing burying it.

    Good morning Lumnah Family. Enjoying your progress from the central valley of California. Al, may I recommend, having a couple loads of gravel, road base, ect. delivered to the property, to have on hand for future projects. I wish you would of used much more gravel for this project. Embrace the struggle, God Bless your family!

    Good evening Al and family from Sydney, Australia. We are in the middle of winter here, luckily not like your winters, cold (8 deg C) and windy today but the sun was shining. The grass is looking good at the off-grid property and well done on the cistern. If I may make a comment, I would suggest putting a screen on the overflow pipe outlet to prevent insects and tiny livestock from getting up there. Don't want dead mice in the water. That is going to be a great place to live when you finally move. Keep up the good work, we enjoy your channel and look forward t each post. All the best, mate.

    Rain, rain, going away, yay! Grass looks great! Whoo hoo, the IBC tote came out on the first try. I bet you took a big sign of relief for that. Nice job. I just thought you were going to use pea gravel around the inlet to get some kind of filtering before it enters the inlet pipe. Once the dirt filters out of the inlet pond it should run clean again, right? Cool seeing your brother help you on this install. Too bad your nephew got water logged in his boots! Overflow pipe, nice. Sock screen on the inlet pipe is an improvement. I like the constant water movement. That filter on the inside looks beefy. Thanks for this Al and Gina.

      The inlet area should be filled with 3/4” washed gravel to just above the inlet, then covered with pond liner, then covered with a small layer of gravel and topped with a lot of large rocks. Thjs will protect it longterm from a LOT of potential issues and erosion.
