    I want to review the Valve Index Controllers separately as mentioned in our review of the Valve Index headset because I think some people are interested in just the controllers as an upgrade to their current VR setup.
    So I thought it would be interesting to review the Valve Index Controllers by comparing them with the controllers of two other major VR brands: the Oculus Touch and the HTC VIVE Wands. At the end of this video, I’ll let you know what I recommend.

    I reserved my index controllers on August 1st, and they FINALLY came in this morning! I heard that they "fixed" the thumbstick issue with the newer waves of reservations (they said they designed it that way but wanted to be understanding to what people want) and I am happy to report that it's true!! My Index controller thumbsticks can click in in every direction, and in games like Pavlov and No Man's Sky, I am able to run by clicking it down.

    I have just received my Valve Index kit after having a Rift S for a month now. The Index controllers are very intuitive for someone who is a gamer and has an idea how VR games play, but for someone completely new to VR and gaming in general, the touch controllers are good for introducing all this because of the simple face button/stick controls that give better direct tangible feedback. (Grip button opposed to a pressure handle)
    My right Index controller has limited directional joystick clicking. I have determined that it is because the rod the joystick rides on is just barely not long enough to be able to press the button at an angle. My solution was to carefully and slowly remove the face plate through the joystick hole (being mindful to avoid the top of the face plate where the ribbon cable is) then lifting off the joystick with slow pressure to keep the second ribbon cable intact. I then placed a 1mm ball bearing in the joystick then packed it down back into the rod like a musket ball and that gave just enough length the rod to make it so it clicks in all directions now.
    My family is composed of all artists and engineers, so combined we're filled to the brim with tools that make small component jobs simpler, so if you do this yourself, just be extra careful and use non metal tools if possible.

      I have both the Index controllers and the Touch controllers, and I haven't yet been able to make any knuckles-like grips that work as well on the Touch controllers as the Valve Index does. You'll get halfway there, but the shape of the Index controllers really lend themselves to fit your hands much better than the Touch does.

    Great Video and I totally agree with your "Pro's and Cons" regarding each controller! Personally I own a Rift CV1 and love the ergonomic design and weight of the touch controllers, but where I work, I have access to all three controllers (Vive wand, Rift touch and Valve knuckles). For overall comfort, I prefer the touch controllers and I too find the Vive wands to be bulky and clumsy. But we recently got the knuckles controllers in and the individual finger tracking really does add a greatly improved sense of hand presence, and I love the fact that I can release my grip without dropping or accidentally throwing the controller out of my hands....8-).

They need to ditch the track pads entirely and move the joystick closer to the center or even just swap the joystick position with the track pad.

    Just wanted to add this in here: i have carpal tunnel in both my wrists and when comparing HTC Vive and Valve Index I would say Vive has the center of gravity in like one mass lump whereas Index has it spread out over more in different places, that could affect something when you turn your hands a lot in...
    Another thing is I don't think It'd be too difficult to place DIY straps in the HTC Vive controllers using similar-ish tying as the Index used. Cheers!

    actually at what you said abbout competitive gameplay: yes more lightweight controllers will give you a faster aim, BUT the problem is, you wont have a smooth aim. It was so at least for me, i was kinda used to my normal vive wands and was not bad at aiming but it was kind of difficult, later on i put protective silicone chases on them that nearly doubbled their weight and boom i had super smoot and steady aim. as much as it was for beat saber ... couldn't make out a difference as i was still a newbie to it when i put the protectors on and got acustomed to it, i can do expert+ without problems and it nearly doubbles the workout with the doubble weight. as for protection... one of my vive controllers survived a critical full power gorn strike on a 90° outwards facing corner in my room, which left the upper disc beeing seperated by abbout 1mm where the upper and lower half of the disc meet, poped right back together (thank god). since that i do use those and with a little bigger room, i can still report that both of them are allive and well, although one makes a little louder rattle sound while rumbling since a friend of mine smacked it at my rooms glass door ... and no the door survived me and gorn, aswell as my friend, so leighweight may not be the best and a testament to the almost indestructable nature of the vive controllers

    I have vive controllers. The touchpads on those break so easily. Repaired one of my vive controllers back in march and it is acting up again. Im willing to flock out money for the valve index controllers

  • @Cindarr1
    @Cindarr1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main problem with using the wands or the index contolers is that they need the base stations (another small fortune) and some way to connect them to the pc. The original vive has a little box that the headset plugs into that doubles up as a bluetooth receiver, and i think the bluetooth is built into the index headset.

    • @davomate1000
      @davomate1000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The base stations are not wired to the PC, only to power. The link box only includes Bluetooth to put the base stations in and out of sleep mode. There is no link box with the Vive Pro or Index

    • @Cindarr1
      @Cindarr1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davomate1000 I know the base stations are standalone units but I was referring to the controllers. They're wireless which means they're either Bluetooth or some other wireless solution that your headset/PC needs to support. I'm not sure if all headsets have Bluetooth or not. If they do then connecting them probably won't be an issue. However if you're not using a vive or index already, you'll need to buy the base stations as well.

    The thing about the touch controllers is, that the rings are placed in such a way, that in an accident you are most likely to bump your fingers and not the ring. Backhanded slashes near a wall are the only real danger to these controllers.

  • @jordirapper
    @jordirapper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have all 3 and Index win IMO.
    They have finger tracking and controls giving best of both worlds.
    Quest are simple and small but work.
    Wands are too outdated now. I prefer them for Beat Saber the most but anything else I use Index.

  • @greenjacketman560
    @greenjacketman560 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't really like the oculus touch controllers, the grip button isn't very intuitive to me, the trigger also feels very cheap and light. ( I also have big hands ) so they aren't very comfortable. I currently use vive wands but want to try the knuckles controllers but am unsure if they will work for me.

  • @mirak63
    @mirak63 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got the knuckles since one week, and coming from vive wands, it's not easy to get used to them.
    First I never disliked the touchpad of the wands, and knew the stick would make locomotion harder.
    It's harder because the stick springs creates tension on the thumb, that makes it harder to have precision in movements, harder to rest on a specific position, especially since in VR your arms are moving around, and are not still like if you play in a couch.
    Second issues is that the physical trigger conflicts with finger presence, because even when you don't have a gun in your hands, you always feel a trigger.
    So when you grab something you feel a click on the index finger, this is immersion breaking.
    Maybe they should have put a trigger on each finger for consistency, or find a way to have a triggerable trigger xD
    Third, I have average hand size for a man, and the knuckles feels too small. I am already on the lowest position, and my hand and fingers tend to feel to high.
    They designed the wands with simplicity in mind, and they should have kept that with the knuckles, and still used a track pad and one button.
    The added complexity creates to much inconsistencies accros games.

    It's sad, the thumb stick position on the index is a deal breaker for me. I've seen they went through several iterations to make the controller very ergonomic, but they must have designed the thumb stick position while out drinking one night.

    my brother (16) (I’m 11) somehow always throws my psvr controller against the wall after declining to put the straps on after I insist, and has “accidentally” broke the “e” key on my old laptop, has smacked my quest controllers on the wall due to him turning around, and hitting the wall. So now I just done let him touch my quest considering the fact I’ve had a psvr, which in my opinion. The tracking sucks.
    being able to turn around freely makes me feel great, and I do not want to lose that ability because my brother accidentally breaks it somehow. now I just don’t trust my brother with my quest
