What most folks today forget is that the original run of I Love Lucy ran for 6 seasons (1951 to 1957). The show had been on television for over 40 years by the time I started watching it in the early 90s. Millennial here by the way. Today, if you are just discovering this television gem, it is now over 70 years old. To put it into more perspective, in terms of time, I Love Lucy has survived so many changes to how we watch programming. It went through television having color, television having knobs, television having remote controls, television having rabbit ears, television being flat-screen, television going from analog to digital, cable television, streaming, and where we are gathered today, TH-cam. There is no doubt that this show will remain long after I'm gone.
I started watching in the early 90s as well. I still remember watching it whenever I was home sick from school and every day in the summer. There used to be nick at nite in the summer and Tuesday nights were Lucy nights! A few hours of back to back episodes. Today I have the entire series on DVD. Funny how a show that aired years before I was born is one of my most favorite shows ever.
If you're wondering why some of the fashion looks really garish (like the bizarre hot pink apron over a bright blue dress at 3:04), it's because these colors read differently in black and white :) So they were styled with how the clothes would look in black and white in mind
Not sure what folks are talking about. This type of colorizing isn't some AI that magically "knows" what color things were. It's a very human-driven art. Humans have to do research to find out what colors things were, or make educated guesses. It's like coloring in a coloring book. The digital technology is just a tool to implement those human decisions.
Some of the colors were also adjusted a bit for broadcast television. There is a color photograph of the entire set while in construction and the kitchen was painted in a mustard yellow. Not sure what the name of that color is. They kept changing colors as the show progressed. The living room walls and doors were painted in shades of gray. They did get the green hallway correct and the bedroom was blue. Too bad we can't post pics here.
Wow, it's like an entirely different viewing experience .... the colors are so vivid and realistic. This could be billions more in syndication/royalty monies!
My favorite Fred line was when Lucy and Ethyl decided they were going to make themselves up as glamorous. Lucy was in the room with Fred and Ricky when Ethyl knocked on the door. Fred jumped up and Lucy said, "don't get up Fred, I'll get it Fred said, "get it? I was gonna LOCK IT."
Part of me really wants to try to do bread like Lucy and put in the 13 cakes of yeast, just to see what it does. However the rational side of me is thinking about the mess it would be to clean up. My rational side wins.🙆🏼♀️🤣
Remember reading that they actually found a bakery to specially bake the bread, up until reading this I didn't even think it was a real loaf of bread. It was rye because it kept better, and after filming the episode they actually sliced it up and shared it with the audience
Originally Bea Benaderet was set to play Ethel's role, but something happened to change that- thank goodness! I liked BB, but she was no Ethel! If you remember, she played the elderly lady widow that Lucy was trying to fix up with the grocery store man. That was a hilarious episode!
Fun to see it in color, very well done too! The only thing that looks very unnatural is Lucy's hair. If you look at color photos, her hair color looked very different (a softer shade red). But still, well done:) must have takes ages to colorize all this!

I've watched I Love Lucy all my life from my teens all the way up to now as a middle aged guy, and I think this is the first time I've ever seen these in perfect color!! What a major difference. It makes you see the 1950's as everyone else did back then when they lived it. The outfits and costumes they all wore came to life! Thank you for this work; it's sensational. You could however tell when certain patterns like small checkered clothing like Lucy had on was a little difficult for the software, but it's only when it's far away. Up close it's perfect. Thanks again!!
I was born in late 1956. I Love Lucy was on in reruns my entire life. It was one of the best things about being home sick from school, lying in bed and watching Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel.
Black and white was done to perfection back then. I grew up on watching them in black and white, so that's what I'm use to. Still great though in either version.
I'm sorry, I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I personally prefer watching the series in classic BLACK & WHITE. It brought out that priceless nostalgia of this legendary iconic program in my opinion...🤔

Honestly, it seems that more people prefer the original black and white versions over colorization and not just with this. Maybe people who prefer the originals are much more vocal about it, but it seems that colorization has gotten such intense backlash, whether it was when it was in it's infancy or the modern technology. It seems that many absolutely despise it. The thing to remember though is that the original black and white versions aren't going anywhere, and colorization is merely an alternative rather than a replacement or a modern version. And anyone who doesn't like colorization certainly doesn't have to watch stuff that way. Personally, I'm a big fan of colorization. I was absolutely blown away by it with my first major exposure to it many years ago. Last year, I collected all of the colorized material of The Three Stooges. I already owned all the main shorts, but I definitely prefer the colorized versions of the 20 shorts that were colorized, and some of the additional colorized material is very enjoyable as well. Even though there will always be haters of colorization, I'm glad it still has its fans that can appreciate all the effort put into it and what it brings to entertainment that is famous for a reason.
I love this in color I wish they would make the complete series in color I'd buy them it's like watching new episodes even though I've seen them all thousands of times watching them in colors like watching them for the first time

Im 35yrs old, been watching I Love Lucy since I was 9yrs old, with my sister, on Nick-at-Nite. I never get sick of it. Its really cool to see the colors. I never imagined their kitchen was a weird dark green color with yellow appliances 😂 NOTE: IT WAS TITLED THE BEST OF I LOVE LUCY, BUT IT WAS JUST CLIPS OF 2 DIFFERENT EPISODES(FIRST 3MINS WERE OF SAME EPISODE('JOB SWITCHING') AND THE REST WERE FROM 'POINEER WOMEN' WITH A FEW HOLLYWOOD CLIPS THROWN IN LOL

The color is nice but there's something about the black and white which I will always like better. Probably because it gives it a classic appeal as well as timeless. It allows the viewer to kind of "go back in time" to when it was originally aired, experiencing it for the first time. The color almost makes it unreal.
This is really good colorization. Colors are vivid and realistic and no creeping black and white around the edges of everything which is plainly a poorly done colorization. I still prefer I Love Lucy in black and white, but the color when well done is fun and interesting to see.

Lucy Arnaz mentioned it a few years back in an interview. it was broadcast in black and white and the DVD’s available were all made from prints of the black and white plate prints made for TV, but Lucy and Dezi were ahead of the times and filmed in color. the entire series masters are in color and safely in the archives. so yes, one day they will all be released. and it’ll be much easier than “colorizing” them all. however the few “colorized” episodes were made quickly to match the original colors. set photos are readily available in color
Back in 2019, I went to the special I Love Lucy event in the movie theater where they showed five of the colorized episodes. Before they showed the episodes, they showed a short documentary about the colorization process. Apparently, they did extensive research find out the true color every object/prop/costume so that they could colorize it correctly. For a lot of things, like costumes and props, this was actually very easy, since nearly all of the costumes and props still exist in the studio's archives. For other things, it was harder and they had to rely on backstage photos and/or drawings and notes. But they were able to figure out the true color of nearly everything, and colorized it to its true color--with very rare exceptions. One such exception was a scene where they changed the color of Ethel's dress, because her dress was a brighter color than Lucy's and caused her to pull focus from Lucy in the scene. They felt that making this change was justified, since they knew the producers would never have upstaged their star in this way if the scene was shot in color. But for the most part, every single part of each colorized episode is as close as they could get it to looking like real life, so that it's as if we're seeing what the studio audience saw back when the episode was filmed.
Having already seen The Long Long Trailer this was not a shock to me. I'm sorry to say they actually look better in color. Must be because I'm only 35.
I think the reason most of the older people prefer the black and white I love Lucy is because the original colonizations done 20 years ago looked very fake, there were only 16 colors. The new colorizations are much easier to enjoy.
I don’t think it has to do with age because I’m 19 and I happen to prefer it in black and white as it gives a more classic and timeless appeal - the color takes away from that aesthetic imo.
Thanks I had never seen I Love Lucy in color B4. Best scene 👌 for me has always been the William Holden @ Brown Derby. 4:50 the way she smacks the dough and smile on her face "Happy Little Loaf" 😆
Today is the anniversary of my parents' wedding and my mom LOVED I Love Lucy. They had 53 good years together and I don't mind watching I Love Lucy anytime but especially today. Thanks for making this video!
I think color helps this play to younger people who did not grow up with black and white. It gives it a new feel. The people who chose the color for the items on screen get it wrong a lot. For example, as far as I know kitchen appliances of the day only came in white (Stove and Refrigerator).
Can you please do I love Lucy in color when she gets slapped in the face with chocolate I can’t afford to buy the movie so can you please do when they start slapping each other in the face with chocolate that’s my favorite part.
Hi! The episodes are available in packs with a few episodes each or in the Lucy Colorized collection, both are dvd sets available online on sites like Amazon, sold by CBS.
I think CBS is responsible for this colorizing job. They did a great job. I saw two colorized episodes of "I Love Lucy" a couple of years ago. They also colorized a few episodes of"The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." I wouldn't mind seeing "Leave It To Beaver" in color. They moved to ABC for their last season, but the first five seasons aired on CBS.
I've been watching this show since I was a kid in the 80s! I've always loved it!! I love seeing it in color , and always loved all 4 characters❤❤❤ especially little Ethel❤❤

I saw that same movie too, and unpopular opinion but I loved it. If you look on my channel I actually colorized the original episodes scenes from ‘Fred and Ethel Fight’ the episode that they were filming in the movie.
Vivian Vance was a very beautiful woman, having these colorized proves it. She was 2 years older than Lucy but didn't like to dress down & gain a little weight to play Ethel as Lucy insisted upon it. The whole series should be colorized imo.
I[m all for colorization because the technology has finally arrived. But oh my goodness, can they hire a good designer or a stylist to chose the colors of the clothing, upholstery and walls? It’s awful. Everything looks terrible. Call the gays and get them to fix this!
I wish they would colorized all of the episodes, watching them in black and white, you really can't see everything, it looks like a bunch of pastey people, I love the color you can see the pretty classic backgrounds, I love the dishes they used back then, I'd buy all of them if they'd colorize it, I have a few colored episodes

When I was 7 my sister was 14 we'd always fight over the TV she'd want to watch I Love Lucy and I wanted to watch sesame Street she won most of the time LOL but there was a few times she did let me watch it. To this day we still get each other about it. 😆. can we just go back to the '80s or for that matter the 70s even what is wrong with the world?? Ugh. Even before pre-covid it was bad but it wasn't this bad!!!!! it's like the world is spinning out of control with all these big huge financial conglomerate companies out here trying to run it.
Lucy, and Fred had the funniest lines. In addition, both of them knew how to say the jokes. Some people although the jokes are funny, don't know how to say the jokes, and the jokes are not as funny. Does this make sense?
You could probably show me a bit from every episode and I could probably give you the name of that episode. If not that, most definitely the season and the disc it's on.
Great question! They used sketches and other info left from when they made the show and footage taken (against the rules at the time) by people watching the show.

Thats right! While colorizing, if the colors wouldn't have looked good they would replace them with less garish colors.

Many do, although this color is a lot easier to enjoy then the original colorizations, which included downgrades resolution and a whopping 16 colors.
Colorization never gets the skin tones right. They look like mannequins.

How did you find the color episodes??
@@misstiff2216 I got them in the I Love Lucy Complete Colorized Collection. There are only a few episodes that have been colorized from the series.

I used to hate watching any colorized film or TV show because the color looked so fake. This is one of the BEST jobs I have ever seen!

The color shows the unconventional color schemes between sets and costumes, in order for them to show up properly in black and white.

For a lot of things, like costumes and props, this was actually very easy, since nearly all of the costumes and props still exist in the studio's archives. For other things, it was harder and they had to rely on backstage photos and/or drawings and notes. But they were able to figure out the true color of nearly everything, and colorized it to its true color--with very rare exceptions. One such exception was a scene where they changed the color of Ethel's dress, because her dress was a brighter color than Lucy's and caused her to pull focus from Lucy in the scene. They felt that making this change was justified, since they knew the producers would never have upstaged their star in this way if the scene was shot in color. But for the most part, every single part of each colorized episode is as close as they could get it to looking like real life, so that it's as if we're seeing what the studio audience saw back when the episode was filmed.

Having already seen The Long Long Trailer this was not a shock to me. I'm sorry to say they actually look better in color. Must be because I'm only 35.
I think the reason most of the older people prefer the black and white I love Lucy is because the original colonizations done 20 years ago looked very fake, there were only 16 colors. The new colorizations are much easier to enjoy.
I don’t think it has to do with age because I’m 19 and I happen to prefer it in black and white as it gives a more classic and timeless appeal - the color takes away from that aesthetic imo.

I think color helps this play to younger people who did not grow up with black and white. It gives it a new feel. The people who chose the color for the items on screen get it wrong a lot. For example, as far as I know kitchen appliances of the day only came in white (Stove and Refrigerator).

I think CBS is responsible for this colorizing job. They did a great job. I saw two colorized episodes of "I Love Lucy" a couple of years ago. They also colorized a few episodes of"The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." I wouldn't mind seeing "Leave It To Beaver" in color. They moved to ABC for their last season, but the first five seasons aired on CBS.

The series had to also move to another studio, which is why the Cleavers bought a new, bigger house. And yet, the boys still had to share a bedroom!

CBS has colorized a number of episodes of I Love Lucy in the 2010s, which are timed to air on Friday nights in holiday periods.
They have stopped the past few years with making new ones, I hope they resume soon!

I saw that same movie too, and unpopular opinion but I loved it. If you look on my channel I actually colorized the original episodes scenes from ‘Fred and Ethel Fight’ the episode that they were filming in the movie.
Vivian Vance was a very beautiful woman, having these colorized proves it. She was 2 years older than Lucy but didn't like to dress down & gain a little weight to play Ethel as Lucy insisted upon it. The whole series should be colorized imo.
I really think one day when the technology gets advanced enough, they will colorize the whole series.
I[m all for colorization because the technology has finally arrived. But oh my goodness, can they hire a good designer or a stylist to chose the colors of the clothing, upholstery and walls? It’s awful. Everything looks terrible. Call the gays and get them to fix this!

When I was 7 my sister was 14 we'd always fight over the TV she'd want to watch I Love Lucy and I wanted to watch sesame Street she won most of the time LOL but there was a few times she did let me watch it. To this day we still get each other about it. 😆. can we just go back to the '80s or for that matter the 70s even what is wrong with the world?? Ugh. Even before pre-covid it was bad but it wasn't this bad!!!!! it's like the world is spinning out of control with all these big huge financial conglomerate companies out here trying to run it.

Great question! They used sketches and other info left from when they made the show and footage taken (against the rules at the time) by people watching the show.
