this durian seems not only fresh but is also perfectly ripe. my mom says that it was a common method of opening the fruit because it doesn’t damage the custardy insides. you could press your fingernail in between the spikes like where there was a natural crack on the first compartment and split it open. only really possible if it’s ripe enough and hasn’t been frozen. that soft texture and golden color means that for sure this one was a winner.

Hey, Lisa. I have a suggestion so you don’t have to open sa durian with a knife once you open it in half. All you have to do is split it from the inside. Like you only have to push down either side of the durian so the half/middle will just pop open. It’s easy and you won’t get injured from the spikes!😁

I'm the designated durian opener in my family. We get the frozen ones so we have to wait atleast a day to defrost. But after that it's easy peelinh. Generally I know the natural opening on each pod is in the middle. Once I find the natural line I crack open a little hole and slice my thumb or finger down the line to open the pod. Once I'm in the center, the core will reveal all the natural divisions, so you'll just slide your finger right thru it and pop each pod out :D

it’s interesting to see others open durian in their own way 😁
from where i came from, it’s hard to explain but we use knife/cleaver only once to open the durian ‘compartment’ by halves. the rest we only use our hand to get to rest of the fruits by pushing the white layer with our hands, so there’s no need to touch the thorn anymore. no need to put the durian flesh on a plate since each compartment could stand on its own.
another unique practice, as eating lots of durian could make ur body hot, we pour water to the compartment and drank from it 😆
hope u can give it a try the next time u buy durian 😊

My dad told me once that in Vietnam, Durian is considered a silent killer because at nighttime they can unexpectedly fall off trees and hit somebody on the head. Given how rough and hard they are, well yeah I can totally see why... 😭😅

$97? That's like selling spices in European market during the age of sail.
