Fantastic game, when Bucky hit that home run my house erupted. Yankee fan forever ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾
North NJ. My 6th grade teacher who was a long suffering Sox fan rolled a tv into class and we watched the game from start(1:05 start?) until 3:05 when school let out. I booked home to watch the rest. It’s crazy how you can remember exact feelings and thoughts from so long ago but I vividly remember as an 11yo the ball leaving the bat and thinking it’s gonna be off the wall and happy Yanks cut it to 2-1 but of course it clears the wall. Great memory. Can’t believe this will be 45 years ago next October.
bucky was mvp of the 78 world series. he was one of the top 2-3 defensive shortstops of the late 70s. he was very popular with yankee fans for several years. some people make this homer sound like its bucky's 1 moment in his career, but it wasnt. he's above-average for sure and probably in the top 30% of all starting shortstops to have ever played.
Often overlook because of Reggie Jackson hitting three home runs for the Yankees, many die-hard Yankees' fans forget that Mike Torrez was the winning pitcher of Game Six in the 1977 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodger by beating them 8-4. Torrez, as a free agent, made the mistake of not resigning with the club instead went to the other side.
One of the reasons Torrez didn’t resign with the Yanks is because the GM at the time, Gabe Paul, told George Steinbrenner to invest as much as he could into a twenty-seven year old free-agent pitcher named Rich Gossage. Torrez was 33 and wanted like a four-year deal. Another reason is that despite having done a pretty good job in 1977, Mike was barely over .500 with the Yanks. He won a lot of games at the end of the season where the team scored a lot of runs for him. He also was very good in the playoffs. But in taking his entire 1977 into account, he was a good pitcher, not a great one. The Yanks did the right thing not bringing him back.
@@dzanier Thanks. In the 1978 year, however, the Yankees had two top relievers, Rich Gossage and Sparky Lyle. Nevertheless, the bulk of the relief work went to Rich Gossage in 1978. I believed Gossage came up through the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
@@Dimeropepe He came up with the White Sox in 72, got traded to the Pirates before the 77 season began, and then signed with the Yanks in November of 77.
@@dzanier Man, I think the White Sox regretted that trade.
@@Dimeropepe They had no choice but to make it. Despite being in a big market, The White Sox at the time were not a team that had lots of money. Their attendance wasn’t good. The players they sent to the Pirates, Gossage and lefty reliever Terry Forster, were going to be free agents after 1977. GM Bill Veeck knew he could afford to sign them and didn’t want to lose them for nothing. So he traded them one year before they could hit the free agent market.
